I watched it yesterday and it was complete madness, craziness, it is absurd, sometimes stupid, very very funny and gross. I hope it gets the recognition that deserves. I loved it.
I adored this film, it’s easily the best film I’ve seen this year so far. I fully agree with your stance on people saying “it’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen”; one of the few reviews I listened to said something along the lines of “When you think it’s hit its peak of insanity, it keeps topping it” and boy they weren’t kidding. The third act literally had me holding back shouts of “What the absolute fuck?”.
I really hope this movie actually does sneak into the Oscar’s. It’s one of the few movies that people seem to be passionate about this year, and it placed at Cannes and it placed first at Midnight Madness at TIFF. I wonder if Critics can keep it alive if it has a chance. Specifically makeup and Demi Moore.

Honestly, if something as weird as Poor Things can get as many nominations as it did i can-t see why The Substance can't. Dude I am believing the hype. I saw the good buzz from this movie after Cannes and immediately put it on my radar. I then watched the 1 minute teaser and loved the way it was edited together with the music and everything. Last night I watched Fargeats’ Revenge and I thought it was great. This filmmaker has a nice style to their shot selection, gore, and the scores of her movies. I am absolutely pumped to watch this Friday.
Ambitious, daring, unafraid….all those things, and executed to perfection by a director to watch 😊 if Demi Moore doesn’t get at least a nod for best actress at all the awards then it just proves that they don’t take horror seriously as a genre 😬 film of the year for me, just brilliant 👍

@@Kevo6492 The weird part is this is just a recent thing. They showed Beau is Afraid ffs (even if it was just a week or two they still showed it). They are seriously missing out on money from me because they won’t bring in any actual good movies, it’s annoying as hell
Just saw the movie. It's quite fun, gruesome and it does raise some psychological/philosophical questions. But I saw in one of the trailers a quote that it's a brutal takedown of unrealistic beauty standards, or something along those lines. That's not really the takeaway message here. You can't change the fact that young women are more attractive than old women, the movie doesn't shy away from pointing that out either. Sue IS objectively way hotter than Elizabeth. Nothing in the movie suggests that society gets this wrong. And it doesn't, it's rooted in biology, it's not a matter of personal opinion. If you're a person whose career depends on being attractive, then yes, you're going to suffer a lot as a consequence of aging. So you should probably build your value in other ways too, instead of putting all of your eggs into one basket. The real takeaway is that we should accept that we can't have the privileges of youth forever. We have to accept aging for better and for worse (mostly for worse), and age gracefully, because the alternative is to desperately cling onto youth and become a monstrosity in the process, as is typical of celebrities that get addicted to plastic surgeries.
I actually think and the Director confirmed that this movie is more about tackling themes of control, the fragility of the human body, and how easily we can lose ourselves-quite literally. It’s body horror with a philosophical twist, making you ponder the nature of existence while someone’s intestines morph into a nightmare-inducing sculpture. Then there’s the fact that this is the first film I’ve seen in a while that critiques not just the male gaze we’re all sick of hearing about, but women’s own obsession with youth and beauty. It’s a critique of women as much as it is a critique of society and its standards. Women do this to themselves. Ultimately, it’s about self-loathing and how empty your life can become when it’s built around external validation and love.
This movie was so interesting and compelling. I loved the themes and was picking up what they were putting down. Then, the ending happened. Haha I feel that the director decided to just go crazy rather than try to end a smart movie well. I dont think the ending was for me. But, I do see that there are many many fans who LOVED the ending. So, mission accomplished. Definitely worth a watch.
This movie is amazing, as is this review. I feel like this might be more Sci-Fi than Horror? I could be wrong, though. If it's more sci-fi, then I might say Oddity is the best horror movie of the year so far. If, this is more horror technically, then this is the better movie of the two.
I really liked the scene where Demi Moore confronts her other self "Margaret Qualley", it was like seeing Freddy Krueger leaves the dream world to face Jason Voorhess in da real world.
Just a correction: The Fly (1984) isn't from John Carpenter. It's from David Cronenberg. For me, Cronenberg is the master of body horror. He directed amazing body horror movies for about 30 years. I believe Coralie Fargeat's work may be a suitable follow up to Cronenberg's work. Btw, I really love The Substance.
Ironically, this role re-igniting Demi’s career as a middle-aged woman in Hollywood and likely her most lauded and celebrated performance in decades sortve contradicts the message of the film.
I see Margaret Qualley and I know I'm going to have a fucked up fun time. Anf nice to see Quaid playing a gross dude in 2 films released in close proximity.
spoiler alert, Margaret was looking like a snack in multiple scenes and not just the exercise portion, there's a scene where she talks to her neighbor and you looking at her like damn she fine with that dark hair

My only negative is that I wish that the poster they used was just the drug or something else because it kind of gives a little bit away. But other than that this movie is absolutely crazy and amazing and that last 20 mins is completely insane!
definitely a polarizing film, as viewers will either love it or hate it ( probably 60-40 love it imo) and I see four possible Oscar noms. 1- Demi as Best actress is a stretch but possible. 2- Dennis Quaid for Best supporting actor is 50-50. 3- Sound design was incredible , like the sound during the crawfish scene which made it three times more disgusting and 4- a definite Oscar nom for outstanding make-up and design.
It's "The Fly" (1986) and "The Outer Limits" and "Seconds" (1966 movie with Rock Hudson). "The Outer Limits" had an episode "Unnatural Selection" about a black market procedure to create a perfect kid. Another episode is "Skin Deep" where a nerdy accountant for a tech company gets his hands on a holographic image enhancer and tries it on himself. It all goes wrong when the "Chad" he's impersonating owes money to a loan shark. The stuff in that Amazon box was disturbing with the minimalist instructions . The Twilight Zone series of 1985 had an episode with Susan Blakely "The Card", a credit card of last resort with a simple instruction that you have to be on time with your payment.
Outstanding movie. People will no doubt hate it. But anyone who appreciates when a movie just goes all out is gonna leave with a smile on their face lol. Its hilariously insane without becoming lost in the sauce for the sake of absurdity. It was absurd. Because it needed to be to bring the movie to an end.
Although the final act was a bit too over the top and started to overstay its welcome. Overall this is how you do a good “wtf” movie. Poor Things, which in my opinion, is how you do a bad wtf movie.
My main problem with the movie was that the basic scenario should be better written. I mean I am willing to accept stopping and reversing ageing etc. and even using medicine to create a better version of yourself since it was science fiction. However, I don't accept that the Demi Moore character would use and even pay for some "substance" when she had not been shown even one single proven case of its success, not to mention the obvious risk of administering the drug all by herself with very complicated instructions and no one to help or monitor. The acting was good, but some scenes were unnecessarily gruesome. It was a fairly good watch, but it was quite predictable all the way, and the ending was no surprise either.
I actually laughed toward the end of this movie!!! I find it interesting at the start but then it was just ridiculous in a way.... I wish it was better. I give it 5/10... This is Comedy/Horror to me.
