fI wish Eggers would adapt 'The Shadow Over Insmouth' by H.P. Lovecraft. His style (especially that used in The Lighthouse) is absolutely perfect for this story.
@@rolandmeyer3729 The spelling doesn't really matter since Cthulhu's name is merely an attempt by mortals to encapsulate the incomprehensible tones of voice needed to express what he/it is. Sure, readers agree on "Cthulhu" but "Kutulu" or something else may as well just be the same as the latter in HPL's books.
This might be one of the best, if not the best, horror remakes of all time. I firmly believe Max Schreck's Orlock is one of the best film performances in cinema history. Just his design, the way he moves, and his expressions still put you in a dreamlike trance today as it did over a hundred years ago. The use of shadows and creative shots set an atmosphere that, to this day, remains unique in the realm of the horror genre. While many other Dracula adaptations have been good, including the 1979 Nosferatu, no other vampire adaptation accomplished the same dread on me as the original Nosferatu did. That is until this version came out. Much like Schreck's performance, Skarsgard disappears into the role. His movement and expression feel faithful yet take their own creative liberties. I also like how Orlock speaks a dead language that adds an extra layer to the surrealism his performance provides. I also like how the iconic use of shadows in the original has been updated in this version creating that dreamlike atmosphere. And just the mood of the film and that looming sense of dread is just mesmerizing to witness. This is definitely one of my favorite Robert Eggers films to date.
I love the Nosferatu silent 1922, and the Nosferatu vampyre 1979..(wrongly listed as 1929on youtube) version I highly recommend the 1979 version, free on RUclipswith ads, it's stunning and weird thing is I felt sympathy for this Count dracula/ orlak, his loneliness his desire for love and the actress lead Isabelle adjani is beautiful and looks like Miss Depp , a must watch
I absolutely love Robert Eggers attention to detail in his movies. He just immerses you in the world of every single one of his movies. Whether its through the dialogue or the sets or the costumes, as soon as you start watching his movies you just get transported into that setting. I have no doubts this will be another home run.
I like that you put film excerpts in your video, a lot of critics don’t bother (lazy). I liked your review! I’ve seen Nosferatu 2 times at an art house, 7-8 years apart. INot scary at all. No jump scares. But it is creepy and you want to be with people, and lights, and joy after you come out of it.
I’m very excited about this movie, but I think it’s such a bad idea to release it on Christmas Day. Not only will it probably fail financially, but it will probably get ignored by the Oscars. I’m hyped for this movie though.
Christmas day is actually a huge day for going to the movies. My family and I would go to the movies every year on Christmas day, and the theaters were always packed. It doesn't matter that it's a horror movie either. People go on Christmas to see all kinds of movies.
feelin a strong 8 out of 10 on this one- i figured, id share my main criticsm of the movie, having seen it twice already, for those wanting to engage in discourse, or even for some, who are still on the fence and are interested- the one drawback this movie has is that it wants to have its cake and eat it too, by which i mean, that tonally, its two separate movies in one and while mostly managing to get the balance right, this film has confirmed my long held belief, that any filmmaker tackling this classic story, will have to ask themselves the (to me, dreaded) question, how to do a modern take on it. this line of thinking provides the film with some of its strongest visuals, while simultaneously sacrificing some of the source materials nuance and more subtle menace. in many ways, im reminded of coppolas version, which makes sense, because murnaus inspiration is all over that film and as a longtime fan, i do see a direct link, connecting all of these movies. coppola, for example, wasnt the first director, to attempt a love story, for his dracula and while i appreciate, that eggers didnt portray his vampire as romantic, theres definitely a strong sexual tone, to him- again a source of memorable images, while also, to me, cheapening the characters and their respective motivations a bit. granted, as i compared it to coppolas film, that one had many moments, of hammy acting and is heavily sexualized, but i still feel, it works better, in context- im sure many will disagree, on that front. what sets the two apart, is that coppolas film is self aware, in its theatrics. eggers though, has gained a reputation, for more cerebral horror, of quiet dread. the first act of the movie has plenty of that and to me, overall, works best. which is kind of a shame, because as much as i was mesmerized, by this version of orlok, the film abandons this quiet buildup of dread, after thomas (hoults character) arrives at the castle. eggers wisely teases us, before giving us a full reveal of orlok, but as soon, as he rises out of his coffin, in the nude, there isnt much subtlety to be found. jump scares, to me, clashed with the previous tone and though i really respect lily rose depps performance and felt for ellen, some of her possession scenes were just overdone, to the point of clichee. again, i respect that she went for it, id just wish, the less is more approach couldve been kept more consistent. if ellens character has an, for lack of better term, possession orgasm, in every other scene, contorts and grimaces, doing her best linda blair in the exorcist impression, it suddenly begins to feel, like so many directors, loudly hammering the point home, so that everybody in the audience gets the message, instead of letting us piece it together and make up our own minds. this is, of course, personal opinion and preference, but its precisely what im getting at, when im talking about the dreaded modern take. and it got more pronounced, as the film went on. which brings me to my last point- every version of dracula, from stokers novel onwards, had sexual undertones, that, in this movie, become overtones. when i say, it provides the film with some of its most lasting images, its bittersweet, because i feel the decision, to center the final act of the movie literally about orlok, coercing ellen into sex, cheapens the way, this story has been originally told, to me. what was missing from stokers novel and was popularized by murnaus original film, was the fact, that a vampire cant survive the sunlight and from that point on, its been adapted many times, for a reason. this is a creature, who only exists, to drink blood, it cant eat, it cant feel the warmth of the sun and IMO, if you already go that far and show orlok as the corpse he is, he also shouldnt be able to fuck, or lust for anything else. drinking the blood has always been inherently sexual and my main problem here is that, once again, this needs to become overt and it feels like an adaptation, for those modern viewers, who dont get this obvious metaphor- one one hand, you go out of your way, to make the vampire appear more corpse like, but to make him still somewhat relatable, turning his main motivation into a very human desire. again, it feels like wanting to have it both ways and the only reason, im elaborating on what bothers me personally, is because there is much of value, to this movie, yet it leaves a strange aftertaste, if you consider, the note it ends on- a beautiful visual, much like the rest of the film, but in my opinion, sacrificing some substance, in doing so. now, these are images that last, no doubt and its not like the original film was a masterclass in script writing, im just worried about the state of cinema, when im sitting in the theatre, swept up in the atmosphere and every once in a while, immersion is broken by something too....obvious. maybe it didnt help, that it was hyped to hell, that im a longtime fan of the source material, that people left during the viewing every couple of minutes, or laughed during inappropriate times. that orloks design, of all things, seems to be a main point of contention, with some finding it to be funny, i personally dont get at all. i dug his look, though its very much a manufactured performance, that doesnt actually allow an actor, to emote all that much. besides the point, if it works. im just low key saddened, by the feeling, that some people seemingly cant enjoy things unironically anymore, hence the at times inappropriate laughter, if youre not outright told, how to feel, during a certain scene, even if it takes a jump scare, to get there. and im not shitting on that, if its done in the right context. overall, i felt it was a very good movie, but the parts, are greater than its sum. ive tried to make my points, as respecfully as possible, for anyone, who reads through this rant, im happy to engage and to further discuss, which i wouldnt do about a film, that didnt have as many strengths and cause me to reflect on it, for what its worth.
Thanks for your review. I can't wait to watch it next month. I like the lighthouse. Willem Dafoe is one of my favorite actors. I've never seen the original from the 1920s, but I still want to see it.
I obviously haven’t seen the movie but If a horror movie is going to make an award season splash it’s Nosferatu. I’m biased since horror is my favorite genre. Thank you for the review .
Watched it on Christmas Day. I loved the dialogue for Count Orlok. Especially during the first meeting at his castle. That scene was very tense. And I liked the pacing, felt like the movie always had something going on, and every scene added to the next.
This is one of those times that it felt like we watched different movies. There wasn’t a second of screen time where Lily Rose Depp didn’t feel as if she was actively acting
Haven’t seen it yet, but knowing the acclaim surrounding Eggers last few films and yet again this time around, I would very much be down for a spoiler review! Also, that SpongeBob intro was EVERYTHING 😭
I read in one review that Orlock speaks and brainwashes Depp's character to speak "Dacian", a dead Balkan language lost to time hundreds of years before this film takes place.
Completely disagree. The Depp girl was awful. The ending was abrupt and terrible. It's was a remake of Bram Stokers which is far superior. It's the worst movie of the year. I had high hopes but it failed completely. Depp was miscast. She ruined it.
I personally don’t enjoy modern horror. The gratuitous violence and psychological trauma isn’t my thing. I don’t want a shockingly scary experience. I did enjoy The Witch and I liked the Coppola Dracula of the 90s. I may see this.
Btw I was wondering why you never reviewed a single season of the series Fargo? I definitely would have loved you to review season 5 when it came out and the series in general
Looks good indeed. What is the difference between this film and Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula. ? Both stories seem rather similar. Great review though. 9.3 ? Wow.
They are similar because the original Nosferatu movie was the first ( not official) adaptation of Stokers Dracula novel. But they didn't have the rights so they changed names, setting and the later parts of the story. If Dracula is a typical Victorian novel I would describe Nosferatu as a "what if Dracula was adapted into a germanic folktale?" Something like the Brothers Grimm wrote for example. The big difference is that the secondary characters are all ommitted or pushed into irrelevance. No brides, No Goldaming, No Quincy, No Seward and even the Lucy arc is left out. Plus Van Helsing isn't a factor in this Version. Nosferatu was inspired not only by Dracula, but also by the Horrors of World War I and the spanish flu. Unlike Dracula, who was mainly interested in exploring England to feast and spread his curse, Count Orlok in the OG is more like a cosmic or folkloric monster. He is very connected to rats and pestillence and though his presence he spreads the plague over Europe. So not only is he a bloodsucker, but also a pest (Kind of like Godzilla, who emanates radiation). Therefore Ellen (Nosferatu's Version of Mina) gets more agency. Look at Nosferatu more like an AU Version of the classic Dracula story. A lot of set up is eerily similar but in detail both diverge. I would even go so far as to say that most Hollywood adaptations of Dracula take more cues from Nosferatu than the actual Dracula novel. For example Nosferatu brought up the sunlight weakness. The novel versions of Dracula and Camilla could walk in sunlight just fine.
Robert eggars building his own world, sooner than latter he will get much deserved big studio movie with massive budget, I want him make next part of dawn of the dead
Moin, a wonderful review. To see the roots of this movie please watch Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens 1922 by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Gray 30/32 by Carl Theodor Dreyer, Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht 1979 with Klaus Kinski and by Werner Herzog, Bram Stoker’s Dracula 1992 by Francis Ford Coppola ( Tom Waits as Renfield! ), Shadow of the Vampire (2000) by E. Elias Merhige. Have fun! Regards from SH Germany ... Jörg
I need some advice, i got to wait till first week of January to see this film because thats when my 2 friends who im going with are available, were planning for a specific day on the 18th this month. But we won't see it till week after holiday week, any advice to wait patiently for then?

I thought this was a terrible film. Basically a re-telling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which is a re-telling of a million other movies in the genre before it. There’s nothing new to offer in this film.
The movie takes place in the Victorian Era the late 1800’s-1900’s not the early 1800’s. This makes a huge difference in setting up the movie. You should read about the Victorian’s and what they were all about, creepy.
I really don't need to read about it. You've all been obsessed with it for years, it's in ALL the movies. One could say that you're the creepy ones due to this obsession ...just saying. Good to know we have more meaninful stories and a better culture now. It would be pathetic if 500 years later we're still fascinated by the exact same sh*t now...that would be sad.
EHH...SOMETHING DIDN'T CONNECT...I WAS UNINTERESTED IN THE CHARACTERS...NO BACKSTORY TO GET INVOLVED WITH ANYBODY IN THE MOVIE...GREAT TO LOOK AT BUT NO SUBSTANCE.
Well the original wasnt exaclty scary. People seem to over hype it in that regard. It was unnerving just like you said this one is. So looks like eggers is a true fan of the orginal and stuck with the theme.
@ well , you have to understand I had extremely high expectations haha . I loved the Witch . One of my favorite movies . I’m hearing this wasn’t his best film nor really that scary . So I am still absolutely going to see it , but my expectations have been lowered a bit .
He spends the entire movie trying to fk the chick. Does this surprise you? He stalks her to fk her. That's it. And screws with her fiance's head in the mean time to drive a wedge between them so he can isolate her and ''consumate". The end. What a thrilling adventure. I cannot wait to spend 1.5 hrs imagining what it would be like to screw a corpse on top of a wedding massacre. - Hollywood, -2024. (Get it? Kinda like Game of thrones but worse...you get it? Or was the parallel too subtle? Bc the director thiks the audience is r*tarded...so, I gotta check...) What is wrong with you people? Just, mentally...why do you enjoy this stuff? I am morbidly curous and I can never understand it. WHY?...just why. Why is this something you all gravitate towards? O_O Why do you want to see stuff like this? Northman ended in the mother trying to fk the son. This one has a similar ''plot" bc it was created by creepy fks who's only mission in life is to see the actresses naked and fantasize about their daddy's fking them. Thus we need a father figure, the decrepit "Nosferatu" whose main mission is "ruining" the angelic teenager, who is kinda twisted herself, naturally, in order to fullfull THEIR fantasy of graping the young actresses but in a way which suggest like maybe they liked it. And they found the perfect moron for it: the daughter of Johnny Depp, who seems to be ONLY able to find porn-adjacent roles since she made her debut. This is the 2nd movie where they're using her to create a Freudian type of character based on her father's life and movie career. Not the first! The SECOND. In order to be able to call this ''horror" though, it was not enough to just copy Tim Burton's ''gothic style" , they had to add a bit more blood elements and ''possession" elements. I call it derivative trash, but you call it whatever you want. It's a pathetic, over-hyped, sad reimagining in a completely horrific year of pathetic movies. Bc Hollywood fk heads had a writers strike bc they refuse to pay ppl. In a normal season everyone would have called it horribly derivative. I am tired of these jokers pretending trash cinema is actually quality. I am not excited. I am BORED by yet another tired, stupid ''reimagining" trying to convince us all that women are prone to giving in to ''temptation to evil". And I am particularly disgusted by the casting choices and real world parallels in this movie. I hope Hollywood goes fully bankrupt and all these a$$holes just disappear from the screen. Bc they have certainly NOT learned their lesson. You cannot put a pretty packaging on trash and convince us it's not trash. It is trash. Old trash too, bc it's yet ANOTHER ''reimagining".
I’m concerned. The original is one of the greatest films ever. Plus, I didn’t enjoy Eggers other films. And Skaarsgard 💤 💤. Is he the only actor around these days ?
It is derivative trash, 1000 times worse than any original. The original was at least an ORIGINAL. Don't be concerned just watch something else and wait for Hollywood to finally go bust. It's what makes me feel better :).
@@cullenarthur8879 Yes, I know! It's very depressing. Which is why I am avoiding this type of stuff. I know, I know a lot of positive reviews have come out since, but they're probably all hyping it up for no good reason bc they're bored out of their skulls too and this is their career... bad time to be a movie reviewer. Like, we have not really seen any original movies in way too long. It's REALLY getting depressing.

I am really excited for this film I am wondering if it’s gonna get in the best picture area😃
I would love it
I hope so
I am pumped
I personally don’t enjoy modern horror. The gratuitous violence and psychological trauma isn’t my thing. I don’t want a shockingly scary experience. I did enjoy The Witch and I liked the Coppola Dracula of the 90s. I may see this.
Baffled how a straightforward Gothic horror film is filtering people so hard.
How do you watch it early??
Btw I was wondering why you never reviewed a single season of the series Fargo? I definitely would have loved you to review season 5 when it came out and the series in general
So great that all of his films are 9+... Can't wait to see this one.
Im super excited ! Hope I like it
So this isn't on par with The Conjuring, Insidious, Evil Dead etc. when it comes to scariness?
It's absolutely terrible. Don't waste your time. Kind of like a watered down Bram Stokers Dracula. 🤓
It's gonna be tought to beat out The Substance for movie of the year.
Looks good indeed. What is the difference between this film and Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula. ? Both stories seem rather similar. Great review though. 9.3 ? Wow.
Same story due to Nosferatu being an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel.
Still waiting on that spoiler review!
Robert eggars building his own world, sooner than latter he will get much deserved big studio movie with massive budget, I want him make next part of dawn of the dead
I hope so, but after the Northman he doesn't seem interested in making big studio films
Watching from Northeast India ❤
Thank you!:)
Jörg
It's releasing here on 10 January 😢
damn! my country it is on Christmas...
oh dang was hoping for a 5 star
Close enough
Nosferatu original isn't scary but it's worth watching and it's free on RUclips movies.
Now I have something to look forward to after a long hiatus
Would you say that this might be the best movie of 2024?
its kinda does a spin off of the 90's Dracula with Gary Oldman, Keanu Reeves &
Winona Ryder. romance between Drac & mina vibe to it
Nosferatu was an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula. So the basic story is the same.
I need some advice, i got to wait till first week of January to see this film because thats when my 2 friends who im going with are available, were planning for a specific day on the 18th this month. But we won't see it till week after holiday week, any advice to wait patiently for then?

Where's The Substance?
@davidzoller8246 I didn't put it because I wasn't sure if it counts a horror movie
@@sebbvell3426 oh it def is my friend
@@sebbvell3426The Substance is way more than a horror movie than Strange Darling that’s for sure. SD is a crime/thriller
Sounds like a great movie. After I watch it, I will review this.
You’re like the only other person who made the sponge bob joke haha
Haha yessssss
Werner Herzog's version EATS this movie.
how could you review movies and Not have seen 1922's NOSFERATU?!!? its beyond Iconic
All this movie did was make me appreciate Coppola's version...
Hey Austin, who’s your favorite evil movie character who was good all along?
I thought this was a terrible film. Basically a re-telling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which is a re-telling of a million other movies in the genre before it. There’s nothing new to offer in this film.
That the Academy will NEVER give an actor award to a horror film.. is a fucking disgrace.
I hope this movie is really good im a fan of the scarsgard family he was creepy as hell as it and was phenomenal in John wick 4
As this is based in Nosferatu, the setting of the film is Germany in the 1830s. The silent movie was like this.
austin have you seen the werner herzog film?
Where did you watch it
Critics Choice screening :)
Eggers next movie will be : the call of Cthulhu
Wil this get Oscar noms or Oscar’s gonna ignore horror again?
Edit- great review btw 👏
They’re probably ignore it… sadly…
Their are a few horror films that won!
I heard he dosent show up as like the full character till like almost 2 hours in and just the way everyone is like omg its amazing !!! Its gonna suck
Huh? That’s not true at all
There is no spoilers for this movie because we have seen the story 100 times.
Yeah but with each iteration comes its own unique set of spoilers
@ Gladiator 2
EHH...SOMETHING DIDN'T CONNECT...I WAS UNINTERESTED IN THE CHARACTERS...NO BACKSTORY TO GET INVOLVED WITH ANYBODY IN THE MOVIE...GREAT TO LOOK AT BUT NO SUBSTANCE.
Lily Rose Depp looks so much like Black Swan’s Natalie Portman.
Well the original wasnt exaclty scary. People seem to over hype it in that regard. It was unnerving just like you said this one is. So looks like eggers is a true fan of the orginal and stuck with the theme.
Please review ‘Different Man’ A24 Award winning movie
Looks like someone forgot Dune Part 2 came out this year.
If anyone didn’t forget that, it’d be me haha
How can it possibly be movie of the year ? The movies official release date is set for January 1st 2025.
Christmas Day for us in the U.S.
Werner Herzog's version EATS THIS movie.
Really? Did you see the original one from 1922?
Happy for Bill. His last 2 movie didn't hit
I really enjoyed terrifier 3 😂
I love this director and this was my number one movie to see this year . But the reception I am hearing so far is making me a little less excited :(
Wait, really? I’ve heard great things from other critics!
@ well , you have to understand I had extremely high expectations haha . I loved the Witch . One of my favorite movies . I’m hearing this wasn’t his best film nor really that scary . So I am still absolutely going to see it , but my expectations have been lowered a bit .
Bring on the _Spoilers!_
Bc the director thiks the audience is r*tarded...so, I gotta check...)
What is wrong with you people?
Where does all this people watch this movie before us
They sent the film out to critics guilds so we could vote for it before our deadlines
Bill Skaarsgard is a brilliant actor, especially in roles like this!
@@andrabook8758that's kinda sad, actually.
I’m shocked,😮 shocked you have never seen the original.
Dune Part Two came out this year. So nope.
