The first concert I ever went to, and I’ve probably been to around 100, was Leon Russell at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield in the summer of 1972. I was 16 when I went. He was great! A big thanks to Elton John for resurrecting his career before he passed away. He was a huge inspiration to Elton and do yourself a favor and watch Elton introducing Leon when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It is mind blowing spectacular and you will be moved beyond belief.

You really need to check another fellow Okie and friend of Leon Russell, J.J. Cale. J.J. was an enoromus talent, but activley shunned the spotlight and resisted fame. He wrote huge hits that Clapton covered: After Midnight, Cocaine, Skynyrd: Call Me The Breeze & Still Got The Blues. He has so many easy going/laid back songs, I think Jay would love him while smoking a cigar and a glass of whiskey. After J.J's passing in 2013 Eric Clapton released a tribute album called Eric Clapton and Friends: A Appreciation of J.J. Cale. Some of the artist who performed are Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, John Mayer and many others. J.J. truly never wrote a bad song, as for songs to listen to: Magnolia, Cajun Moon, Bolin Pot (a personal fav.), Starbound, Gutiar Man, Grasshopper, Durango, Fonda-Lina, Waymores Blues #, and near countless more.

Leon Russell was outstanding with his performance at Madison Square Garden in N.Y.C. along with many well-known other artists/songwriters/musicians/singers at the event of George Harrison's benefit concert for Bangladesh in the summer of 1971. His contribution on George's "Beware of Darkness" was superb. Leon's other songs he performed that night stimulated the audience as well. .By the way, there were numerous guests of George Harrison at that venue not going to mention here.💫🎤🎸🎹🎹🎷🎺🥁🪘🔊🔥☮🎩🎧

From what I have read, Leon Russell was born with a mild form of cerebral palsy that primarily affected the muscular strength and control on his right side. Therefore, he always had a limp and favored his left hand when playing piano. The right side of his tongue was also affected, which led to his unusual singing style.

I ran it trough corn fields, and wheat fields, partying. Just a wild 18 year old. That car was actually no problems to me. 'Caused many for my sister. I miss her dearly, died of pancreatic cancer in 2004. She was 50 years old. Her name was Joy. I miss her everyday. It was a bad day May 23, 2024. It was twenty years ago she passed. 🙏🙏🙏 Thank You for this.❣

He wrote it along with Bonnie Bramlett, who first recorded it. The original title is "Groupie" but when The Carpenters recorded it, the name was changed to Superstar. Rita Coolidge also did a wonderful version of the song. Anyone who's a bug music fan, should listen to all 3 versions. All beautiful.

Leon signed one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Willis Alan Ramsey, to his label Shelter Records. He played piano on the song "Muskrat Candlelight" that you know from the Captain and Tennille. (Muskrat Love) ☮💚🎶

My wife & I were married on Leon’s birthday and got to see him at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles on our 39th anniversary in 2016. This was Leon’s 74th (and last birthday). We got to be in the audience to sing “Happy Birthday” to him. I’ve seen him many times & love his song’s & influence on the music I love.

Leon's musical history is beautifully summed up by Elton John's speech at Leon's induction to the R&R Hall of Fame. You need to watch it! He also was a regular at Willie's picnic and he was great with Joe Cocker on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. I got to see Leon perform live on his last birthday. My favorite song of his is Magic Mirror.

LOVE that you guys got back to Leon, a musician's musician! Also his songwriting is second to none. I'll put in my plugs for Tightrope, Roll Away the Stone, Back to the Island, and if you've only heard George Benson's cover of This Masquerade, then you haven't REALLY heard it!

Excellent!! Thank you for featuring this artist.
It's great to meet artists from the past who, for some reason, didn't reach everyone's ears around the world.
I was lucky enough to meet Terry Reid 10 years ago. An artist who was almost the lead singer of Led Zeplin.
Today Terry is the musician I most admire.

Great reaction. So, now you're wondering if Leon had a sense of humor. Ok, you're not wondering that, but the fact remains Leon wrote some songs that are pretty funny. Check out "Queen of the Roller Derby".

Leon Russell and Willie Nelson were really good friends. Remember Leon was the first person to sign Willie’s guitar, Trigger. Leon was involved in Willie’s 4th of July Picnic from the beginning and it’s not an accident the first Picnic outside of Texas was in Tulsa.

🥲 Myfavorite Leon song. Thank you, guys.
Btw- he influenced a lot of people, including the Gap Band (Tulsa connection) and Elton John, who had called him his “hero”
Near the end of Leon’s life, when he was ill and had been out of the spotlight for many years, Elton recorded with him. I loved that he wanted folks to hear Leon again.

This album shows the continuing influence of his wife Mary McCready. A talented black songwriter, singer, and producer in her own right, I hold their colaborations as some of Leon's best music. Obviously in love on this album, and also in "The Wedding Album," (recorded in Tulsa,) Leon and Mary made some smooth romance with these tunes. "Laying Right Here in Heaven" is a quirky love note between two souls who don't mind a little silly in their personal romance. A real baby maker of an album overall, it certainly worked for me and my late wife.

Recorded with several guys from Stax Records who played in the Blues Brothers Band and with artists like Otis Redding. Steve Cropper on Guitar, Al Jackson, Jr on Drums, Donald "Duck" Dunn on Bass. James Horn was on the Sax solo. He also played Flute on "Goin' Up The Country" with Canned Heat.
