    It is the most informative demonstration for me, a beginner in waterclour, that I have come across to date. Congratulation. Incidentally: I am 78 years old, and I took up scetching with graphite and watercolour painting some 7 months ago. It changed my life for the better. I have a new lease on life!

    Hello Patrick, Your instructions and demonstration are soooooo helpful. So supportive and reassuring. I even like when you recognize a mis-stroke, comment and show how you make an adjustment. I didn't even make a drawing, I just followed your process and had one "ah-ha" moment after another. I've always loved the ephemeral nature of watercolour but never cracked the way to make it more light-filled and fluid. I hated the way what I was seeing and sensing turned out heavy, solid and rigid.
    I will definitely be following your channel. Wonderful. Cheers, Maggie in Melbourne, Australia

  • @LironYan
    @LironYan 7 лет назад +1

    Thanks for another beautiful demo! I was wondering - I've noticed for a while that you tend to use a relatively smaller brush, even for larger areas.
    Why, and how do you ensure the washes are even?
    I actually tried the same, and loved the fact that I can get a nice variety on larger washes (with a smaller brush), but it's also risky, as some of the wash may dry before you finish it.
    Thanks again, love all of your vids!

    Great tutorials Patrick! Thanks for sharing so much knowledge. I usually paint in oil but lately, I have been very curious about watercolor techniques. I feel that I can become a better artist just by practicing with any medium. Somehow watercolor makes me feel that freedom to experiment. Your art is very inspiring, beautiful!

      emi smith Thanks emi, I am the opposite way around i love to experiment at times with oils I really enjoy the control you can have over oils. I agree after i have painted with oils when i return to watercolour I have a new sense of freedom again. This is what makes painting such a endless fun. Wonderful. I loved seeing the abstract paint shapes become representational. Is there a reason, other than technical, why we cannot see the reference picture as you paint? It would help me see how dark values over basic washes bring the ref picture into focus. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing your talent in this generous way.

      Francoise de Rocher Thank you for your comment. Once you have learnt the basics getting the right strength of colour, colour mixing, different techniques like dry brush and wet in wet it is relatively easy. The secret is just relax and don't put pressure on yourself to produce a great painting every time you sit down, experiment and have fun for me that's what its all about.

    Patrick, do you have a video where you talk about your supplies ? Or what you use for your backer board , and what size sheets are you using. This painting is probably my favorite so far. Though I like all your others this one strikes me for some reason. I don't know. Anyway , when you draw plein air , do you ever struggle with the scaling of what you want in a painting, to fit on the paper and look right.

    • @PatrickLeyGreaves
      @PatrickLeyGreaves  9 лет назад +1

      Tmakmak I dont have one yet but i am going to make one. I think it would be a good idea to have a 5 min video showing my painting kit for plein air and studio based work. When I get back from the isles of scilly next week I will make one. Thanks for the ideas :) I have been using 1/4 imperial sheets for demos and mdf for backing while painting. I will show in more detail in the video.:)

    Thanks for posting, very helpful, especially the commentary about mixing the colours. I have one suggestion, and that is that you list the materials that you use, for instance the type and size of the sheet of paper, the colours and the sizes of the brushes. I have watched your general video about materials, but Unfortunately you skip over the size of the small mop brush you use.

    Hi Patrick, really enjoyed watching you paint, I'll be having a look at your other videos! Just wondered whether you stretched your paper, or is it not necessary? What kind of paper did you use? Sorry if you've already had this question! Many thanks!

      I don't usually stretch my 140ib paper unless its a special commission or I know I am going to use loads of repeated wet washes.

    Hi Patrick.Love your loose style of painting very much. I am a bit confused with regards to the shadow on the wooden post in front of the painting. Based on your building (cottage) and other objects the shadow is on the right side but on the post its the opposite.

      +Sylvester Fernandes Hi thanks you for your comment, I am pleased you like my style of painting, I'm not sure what went wrong with the shadows on the post i must have had a funny moment. Thanks for pointing it out. :)

    Very informative. I have one question - the post in the foreground, should it be darker on the other side ? I mean if the house is darker on the RHS should the post be the same or am I missing something? P.S. I am an extreme newbie to water colours

    Hello, Patrick. I'm a late-comer to your youtube site. But I definitely enjoyed your instruction and execution of your simple watercolor. I've been "taking lessons" for a couple of seasons now, but not making much progress in my mind. I approach a painting like a bull in a china shop. I am interested in your brushes in particular and marveled at how you completed this painting with two brushes only. Silly me, I've paid for a Series 7 #5 brush and have all the Cotman brushes. So what about the "dagger" brush and the brush you use for the painting. I am definitely going to try this painting with the luxury of time to stop and replay as needed until I produce something that won't end up in the back of my portfolio, or worse, into the recycle bin.

      +Judith Meyer Thank you Judith for your positive comments. My main three brushes are Isabey they are like a mob brush that points up really well so its very versatile. If your interested you can join my workshop, I have a lot of plans for an extensive watercolour resource of all my detailed educational videos. i am in the process of having my website rebuilt to cater for a members area and a forum where fellow painters can share work and critique each others if this interests you please come to my Facebook page and leave a message and I will notify you when its up and ready , link below.

    Hi Patrick , yes I've been watching some of young Dans videos......are you clairvoyant ..?..😉....they're sort of interesting.....strangely enough after watching a couple of them......our youngest son sent us a couple of pics of himself steering a battered old narrowboat...with the title "I could get used to this".......one of his friends has just bought one on the grand Union canal......intending to do it up..👍🏻

      Keith Payne Not a clairvoyant I just saw your user id there and guessed it must be you! I could get used to it to0 it looks idyllic and would be great for stopping off and painting. I am seriously thinking of saving up and buying one like dans in a couple of years...or am i dreaming - time will tell :)
