Is not even like he exclusively aims at Little Mac with grudge, he merely feels like he knows he cannot get stagnated and decides to get better overall. His lack of cheating also indicates Hondo is not simply countering Little Mac but actually getting ready for any future fight no matter the opponent.

It’s my headcanon that after title defense, Piston Hondo and Little Mac become friends.
In the comics they did. There was a Punch Out comic, and yes, they became friends, IIRC. Though that was NES Mac and Hondo.
