I am someone currently processing the pursuit of an ADHD diagnosis. Hearing the stories here really matter to me. I am surrounded by Neurodivergent friends, have plenty of indicators, but still have been dragging my feet to seek diagnosis.
Long story short, thank you so much for talking about these things. The energy and enthusiasm of this podcast is amazing.

    Font Story Time:
When I was a senior in high school (2008), I had the best English teacher. Start of 2nd semester we are ramping up for our Senior Paper (TM) that we have to have done by the end of the year. At the start, it was all about how to choose what to write about, MLA formatting, citing, blah blah blah. It's dry material for sure and my teacher was trying to keep us engaged by making jokes while going through it all.
One girl in the class was your very stereotypical popular girl: rich, blonde, cheerleader, "wat" was her favorite question to ask..... the whole 9 yards; Not very bright but in an endearing, "thank god you're cute" kind of way.
So, teacher is talking about font rules for MLA: 12 point, Times New Roman or Arial, double space, etc. He notices that popular girl is just..... out in space with her mouth open and eyes glazed over just kind of looking at the wall behind the teacher. Teacher notices this and, in an effort to bring her back down to earth and pay attention, he says the following:
"[Popular Girl], I know you are def an Arial type of girl. 100%, Times New Roman isn't your jam, you're all about Arial, right?"
Popular girl's eyes snap to the teacher and she looks super offended like he just shit in her cereal or something and this is how the rest of that convo went:
PG: I don't like Arial AT ALL
Teacher: Oh? Well I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were so passionate about this. What do you like?
    PG: Mulan, OBVIOUSLY!
Silence falls over the classroom. You can see the teacher's brain short-circuit as what she says does not compute. Class erupts into laughter at about the same time the teacher understands what popular girl meant and his shoulders slump and he bows his head in defeat. Popular Girl looks confused as to why everyone is laughing.
So to this day, my favorite font is Mulan.

Enjoyed this. Anyone interested in learning more about spontaneous/responsive desire and our sexual excitation vs. Sexual inhibition systems should look up Emily Nagoski (get her book Come As You Are).
Her sister Amelia Nagoski also talks a lot about something called Alexithymia, which is common in neurodiverse folks and trauma survivors, and is the difficulty identifying or describing feelings as they arise within the body.

To the last question...A great "therapist quote" that really hit for me is "treat yourself like you would treat your best friend/partner/sibling" - you may not be comfortable standing up for yourself or intervening for yourself, but replace "you" with someone you care deeply about and you may find that you have the courage because "no one is going to teat my person like that!" (also works for self-care...would you let your best friend skip a meal or miss their meds or burn themselves out, or would you step in and try to help?) View yourself from that perspective and advocating for yourself becomes easier.

I also do not have an internal monologue and it fully confuses my wife how I manage to get anything done in a day. We were just speaking last night about this actually. She also does not have the ability to visualize anything "new" in her head. For example, if discussing a purple phoenix, she will automatically envision a phoenix she has seen before (like from Harry Potter) and then tint it to be purple or just tell herself "this, but purple". This is mind blowing to me since I just see a purple phoenix, generated from nothing. It's like comparing two different AI image generators.
Now I'm curious if those who have a constant internal monologue have a similar restriction to their "mind's eye". Perhaps some kind of link between the separation of the visual part of the brain vs the part that controls words and speech 🤷‍♂

I spend a lot of time writing and recently I've adopted Alice as my preferred font for essay work, it's a serif font that's just different enough from TNR to not feel like I'm being too formal. For fiction writing though I've adopted Handlee 'cause it's cute and looks like handwriting so it's easier to be less precious when I need to edit it

As someone who has always been told I am on the autism spectrum, have OCD, ADD, ADHD or some mixture of these diagnoses, do you think it is important for me to actually get diagnosed by a doctor? Or is it enough to know that I am neurodivergent?
I am not a fan of medication, because I don't personally think anything is WRONG with me. I love me, I love my brain, I love the way that I think. I don't want to lose that just so people can think I am more "normal." Sure my brain makes some things more difficult, and I know I don't interact with people in a "normal" way, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It's something I need to learn and a skill I need to hone, but I enjoy challenges and learning new things, especially things that are difficult for me.
I don't think there is anything wrong with taking medication, and I know no band-aid fits every individual's wound, personally I prefer talk therapy and delving deeper into how my brain operates rather than trying to nullify it or chemically change it. I guess my question is, as someone who has been diagnosed, what value do you place on having a doctor diagnose you versus inferring it about yourself and do you think it would be valuable for me?
