Please follow Reign's story as we battle IVDD together.
Reign the German Shepherd on June 27th, 2024. Four days after her SECOND acupuncture session (June 23rd). Reign has been aggressively kicking her rear legs. This has occurred intermittently throughout, however it has ALWAYS been a result of a source of pain: infections in her paws, broken sore toenails, rub rash infection on her tummy, etc, and it has always resolved once the pain source has resolved. In this particular instance, I can only be sure that it is occurring in the days directly after her acupuncture sessions, but I'm unsure to the cause beyond that. I'm wondering if it could be neurological, although historically that has never seemed to be the case. In fact, the leg thrashing first occurred due to a piece of gravel becoming embedded in her paw. The thrashing of the legs was the cause of several injuries that later caused IVDD. Vicious cycle...
Reign is my German Shepherd support dog that needs a spinal decompression surgery. She was first diagnosed with IVDD Type II (Slow onset) on October 6th 2023, but she then relapsed with acute IVDD on May 11th 2024. I am exhausting all avenues to try to save Reign's life, but so far I have found absolutely no support whatsoever and I fear I am losing the battle.
A neurologist examined Reign on June 11th, 2024, and these videos were originally intended to show him Reign's progress over the days to follow. Reign is otherwise using a Walkin' Wheels wheelchair because I also have a degenerative spinal condition and I am unable to support her weight of 60 pounds.
I have since decided to keep posting as I feel these videos could help others that are in a similar situation. There is very little information out there on how to manage large breed dogs with IVDD type II. This is my journal on Reign's progress. I hope that this might help others!
Reign appears to be deteriorating and is losing full bladder control at this time. As optimistic as I try to be, this is a really bad sign for my gorgeous Reigny.

Soo gorgeous! My best friend for 14 years and 3 months was my GSD. Her name was Dora. You have a wonderful journey ahead of you with that beautiful animal.

Aww, Dora sounds incredible to have lived to be 14. That's amazing! I'm sure you miss your angel. Reign has been with me for 10 years. I brought her with me across the ocean from the US to the UK, so we really have been on a journey together. I'm fighting hard to save her life and get her stronger, but also trying to make her current disability feel OK too - even though it's not really. Thank you for your kind words and thanks for watching Reigny's channel.

I lost my 10-year-old German Shepherd named Barron on May 8th 2024. He had the same condition that you were describing for the last 6 months of his life and what I did was put up plastic drop cloth down every night I am still trying to recover as I have been very depressed I wish you luck because I could not have him put down and I was there up until his last breath. I really appreciate you taking care of your beautiful girl! Barron also went blind and that was hard to deal with us well. Just a vet appointment cost me $900! 😢 Annapolis Maryland 💙😇💜

Hi John, I just so sorry to hear that you have recently lost Barron. It sounds as though you gave him your all right up until the end. That is a beautiful gift. I know there is nothing anyone can say to make you feel any better. I lost my 13-year-old dog, Bella, last June and it has taken me over a year just to be able to look at her photos. I miss her every single day and I always will. Grief takes time. But, I suppose, none of us get out of here alive and I truly believe we will see them again when the time is right. Loads of love to you from Reign and Clare.
