I remember being taken by my parents to a baptist, Lutheran, and Catholic church, as a child. They were trying to find that perfect spot of non judgemental places. What they did find was words written by man to control man. Those words of control and greed. I wish they both had read this book. They were all in all deist.

Somebody had to say this. I am glad it was Thomas Paine.

We all deep down in our minds and hearts knew this and know we were dumb down of words to live it. i sense it in agony my life but also sense the Creator to whom it may be is trying my atention. Sense and knowledge was gifted to give us back what we lost may be after death for nothing today can be a promiss for it proved a lie. But we are coming closer to the truth. a little confusing and prednisone is wacking my thoughts. lol

We reject dictators and autocratic regimes, but embrace a personal God controlling our minds and souls from birth to death and beyond, keeping us in step with rewards of paradise and threats of eternal hellfire.

Christians believe that because they were tortured and killed that they must be on the truth but that is not the case. Every group has went through some sort of oppression.

Are you trying to justify it? "We" have not gone "through" anything yet. It was a process and that same process is alive and well. Religion is a lie sold as the truth, or given to us as the truth.

I can never decide who was greater : Tom Paine or Voltaire .??

Paine was a doer and led the fight from the frontline. Voltaire had the gift of the gab, that's all.

He's right, when people put their faith into a "church," they will ultimately see error (though it is odd that he said his mind was something to be worshiped, since it is likely to contain the same degree of error).
Only belief in the Living Word of God is free from error.

"He said his mind was something to be worshiped." Many times did I read this book, but I never saw such a thing. He only said that we need no church to tell us about God, that our own mind tells us better.

    • @LittleImpaler

When he said his mind is his church. That like saying I am my own god. In other words I am the master of my life.

    • @jhonklan3794

But the "living word of god" itself comes from the authority of the early church.

Debunked reason from humanism to humanism. He is a thief. Robbed principles he did not reveal and claimed his own. Remarkably interesting positions, and such that are all too often held. Man is a god. There is nothing higher. Nothing new here. Simple arrogance. When we close our eyes and draw our last breath, his hope will not be my hope.

To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture.
