    Nice work showing the details of how some of these features are actually programmed. Was having trouble figuring out exactly how the Scenes function works, but that's exactly what I need for my live gigging. Also very cool the little demo you did on your Brandy live set with the horns tied to pedal. Was also helpful that you timestamped the different subjects in the description. Well done!!!

    You're so right about the 'boxy' pianos. I'd been playing though headphones and loving it but then took the MODX to band rehearsal and couldn't believe how flat it sounded (I was in stereo too). As well as EQ the other problem was the amount of baked-in effects. So much reverb and nothing seemed to be cutting through. I'm gonna spend some time and see what I can do. The pianos really didn't come close through the PA to the Nord I had before.

    Controlling sounds with midi controller update". turns out, inside a performance, I can load each of my sounds (single part) into each part of the performance patch. Each part lines up with the corresponding MIDI Chanel (sound1/part1/MIDI Chanel 1) so now I got a two tier set up using my MODX as the brain with MIDI controller controlling 16 sounds on the fly. What important for live plying is I have no sound cuts or breaks as I switch through the sounds/channels on the fly. For multi part sounds it still works but my controller has to be able to chose and play multiple midi channels simultaneously.

    Hi Tony,
    Thanks for the very informative video. Highly regarded.
    I have a question related to the part about volume (around 6:00 onwards). Am I wrong in thinking that the slider will keep on controlling the volume if you instead of toggling the Vol/Exp parameter, just reassign the footcontroller to not control volume? It states in the manual that the behaviour your describing is caused by this:
    "NOTE: There may be sounds where changing the Volume Slider has no effect on the output level. This will occur when the control over this PART’s Volume has been purposefully assigned to another means of control - could be the Super Knob, or the Ribbon Controller, or under control of some performing controller."
    Best,
    Frederik

    Great video from a performer's point of view. How easy is it to change effects and effect levels live. I usually bring my Nord electro to a gig because my motif XF and moxf's are so menu driven that I can't really depend on my level of concentration to menu dive quickly enough to change what effect or how much of an effect I want in any given circumstance. Has the MODX made this any easier?

I have MOXF and using pattern mode I get 16 sounds that I can switch through with my MIDI keyboard by simply changing the MIDI channel (1-16) with sounds not cutting off and so on due to all the sounds being load into the RAM. This makes it super nice for live spontaneous playing. I have scratched the surface but have not quite found a set up that works with MODX. Tony, I see you chose the weighted 88-key MODX. I tried one at my local Guitar Center and thought the keybed is quite good. I know you moved to this keyboard from the ES6. How do you like now playing with the weighted keys? What's nice is that you have much more real estate for more splits! I sometimes run out of real estate on my ES and other 61-key keyboards for some songs that require 3+ splits. And, how do you like the MODX's patches? Congrats on your new keyboard, and Happy New Year! Thanks for your great videos!

    Great demo. Thx. Am I right that if you create a sound with more than 4 parts in it it will cut off when you switch to another sound. So if you want to keep that ‘ smooth sound transition’ you have to keep your sounds to under 4 parts each. Correct? I’m very much considering his keyboard for live gigs but this concerns me a little. Wadaya think? Thanks again for a very helpful vid.

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  5 лет назад

      Generally, you are right there may be some patches that will cut off even though they only have four parts. But the keyboard switches patches faster than the motif XF. Pretty fast.

      Tony Winston thanks again. I just got mine today and revisited your video and it all makes total sense now. Just wondering does the amount of elements in a part effect the cutoff situation? So let’s say you only have two parts but they both have eight elements each will that cause cutoff when switching sounds?
      Have you looked into libraries? I’m a Kronos owner as well and I would like to be able to at least match what’s in there if I’m gonna go out with just the modx.

    Bro! After You layer a PIANO, PAD & STRINGS and will want to change for the next song, the "SOUND" will stop in the transition?

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  3 года назад

      Yes. Some patches will change smoothly but most patches with lots of layers will cut off when changing to a new sound

    Hi, My name Anatoly. I have a problem with which I have not been able to figure it out for a long time. I watched dozens of video clips, but I can not find the answer to the problem. My synthesizer MODX6 stopped memorizing the sounds that I save or which I remember from USB or Live set or Favorite. While the synthesizer is turned on, everything is normal, turned off and all the sounds that I recorded in the memory disappear. I don’t know what I pressed wrong, HELP PLEASE...

      I don't know. Sometimes finding your performances can be hard. try searching for the name of one of your performances. You can do that in category search. In live set, hit the live set button a few times until you get to the user bank.

    Hi Tony, that is very informative. Do you think that each instrument can be controlled by external midi controller? Maybe you can try that, specially the volumes.

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  5 лет назад

      I'm sure you can, but it's not straightforward. I'm trying to do that in the studio right now but I'm finding it difficult.

      @@TonyWinston great! did you use any software for your midi controller or you just hook it up directly to your MODX?

    Nice job, Tony. I've been using a MOX for the past 6 yrs & have edited many performances for my duo on it. Tried to find out if my perf. data could be loaded into a MODX, but looks like that wouldn't be possible, from how differently it seems to be set up ( in your video) ? Guess I'd have to start from scratch & edit up our whole repertoire on the new MODX... (DOH !)

      I think you can import your programs from later motifs. Not sure , I decided to program from scratch to take advantage of new features like scenes.

    Tony, Thank you for taking the time to make splitting and live sets understandable. I do have a question. I have been using a MAC Book Pro with Mainstage and sounds added from Spectrasonics for vintage keys. This option you showed will be much easier when I don't want to use my virtual set up. However the only sounds I don't like are the Hammond organ patches and Leslie sound. I have really enjoyed the one that came with Logic Prox or Garage band. Do you know if they can be saved and used on board the MODX8? I also have a Montage 8 that I would like to do the same thing. But because of weight obviously, I gig with the MODX8 now.

      I don't know. I know other sounds can be loaded into to modx but I've not done that yet and the modx isn't a sampler. At least I don't think it is. There are some forums that might help you out.

    So use the string residence The damper pedal noise Hammer noise noise and the sound of the key up
    I can hear recording it would take a good mix to to bring it out in a lie performance gold and I hope to achieve

    Hi Tony, great video, helped me a lot (im gathering info before getting the MODX)
    I read below in the comments that you have also a ES 8... how do you feel about the heavyness of the keys compared to MODX8? I play with a XF8 in my band (before we used to own an ES8) and i always felt the keys were HEAVY, i got tired quickly and i couldnt even play fast runs. On the otherside, i myself own a Triton Extreme 88, also weighted keys but the action is softer compared to both mentioned, i can play a whole gig with it and no problem.
    Is the MODX8 key action the same as ES8/XF8 ? I dont want to get either MODX 6 or 7 because i know the keys suck
    You would greatly help me with your response

    • @ferccino
      @ferccino 5 лет назад

      And by heavyness i mean the keys itself, not the whole synth

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  5 лет назад +1

      Fernando, I just said goodbye to the ES, sold it, and I did go back and forth a few times. The MODX felt different and of course I like what I'm used to. The actions are different but not in big way. I can't really say which is easier. They both tend to make me tired compared to a nice acoustic piano. I think if your ok with the ES action, you'll be ok with the modx
