If you work in a store that has a Bitcoin ATM please keep an eye out for anyone depositing huge amounts of cash - it takes nothing to ask a few questions but you could save someone from being scammed.
It's tough, the scammers try to make the victim fearful that everybody is spying on them. If you go to your local grocery store customer service, there are a LOT of signs up that you shouldn't send money to people you don't know. They also have similar stuff where the gift cards are located. The problem is, the scammer convinces them that even the store clerk is part of the "hackers" and to not trust them.
In White Settlement, TX which a suburb of Fort Worth, a customer in a gas station saw an elderly woman feeding a bitcoin machine thousands of dollars and called the cops right away. The officer showed up, stopped the woman and told the scammer off!! It was such an amazing thing to see this one officer foil the whole thing. They need to put a big sign on every bitcoin machine, notifying people that if someone on the phone is telling you to deposit money for ANY reason, talk to the police first.
Yeah the coin machine and gift/debit card people know they are facilitating theft. They are hiding behind plausible deniability. The government mandated warnings on cigarettes, they should do the same in these industries. Bank employees should ALWAYS warn older depositors taking out large quantities of cash.
My father who is 77yrs old has lost over $45,000 to a relationship scammer but he still doesn't believe that she doesn't exist. It's so frustrating and heartbreaking to convince him otherwise.
My dad is the same, thankfully he doesn't have money, he lives paycheck to paycheck. He's always talking about shady coins, shady deals on Telegram of easy and quick money and he's convinced that it's real. I've talked to him so many times, but he just doesn't listen. It's painful to know what these scams are, but see people close to you get fooled by these shady deals and people.
This happened to one of my good friends. She was having a hard time after a recent divorce and fell for a scammer. Like literally fell in love with this sick @sshole. He was pretending to be 2 difficult ppl. One, the guy she thought really liked her and Two, her romantic interests' best guy friend. He was using stock photos and saying how rich/successful he was. Yet, he was asking her for Xbox live, phone cards, and ofc a Walmart gift card. I tried to be as careful as I could with her feelings, knowing that she was lonely and sad. It was a difficult conversation, but I got her to understand what this vile human was doing to her. It hurt her way after she saw the light, but is a lot more aware of these scammers.
This hit home because it happened to me for $28K. I am a 71 year old educated woman who thought I was aware of all scams. Caller told me he worked for fraud dept at my bank and they were tracking down an inside problem. For every question I asked he seemed to have a legitimate answer. After my incident, my son turned me onto your channel. I wish I had known about you sooner. Thank you for all you do.
@@murky1905 Yeah, she lost it, later her son showed her this channel, and she regrets not knowing about it sooner. This is my understanding on what she typed.
Terribly sorry someone took advantage of you Cindy. Just keep your head up and know a random stranger on the internet wants you to succeed no matter what 💪
This is why I am a Patron of this channel. I am 75 years old and have been involved in the home computer market since 1980. I've seen the market grow into a connected universe which sadly some have used to steal from others.
Last week someone came into my work to use the bitcoin ATM. I overheard them on the phone, and thanks to me having watched your videos for a while, I could tell they were getting scamed. I stepped in and started asking questions. Sure enough, they were on the phone with some Nigerian guy, I explained everything that I knew from watching your videos and stopped the scam
This scam happened to my aunt. It popped up on her computer, pretending to be Apple support. They told her not to speak to anyone else because she was being watched and if she talked to anyone else the "criminals" would get her. They talked her into pulling out her life savings, almost $25,000 - converted it to Bitcoin and sent it overseas. These scams are real. And I want to believe people like this scammer payback are real too. Because there's no one left to help my aunt. She lost everything.
I am a 76 year old woman. You are so kind and compassionate. You make me fall in love with you. Not romanticly. That would be weird. But I feel love for you and all the help you give. Thank you ❤
God Bless you Karen I'm so glad that seniors are becoming more and more aware of these type scams that are growing by the day spread the word and thee awarness to ALL your friends and family that's how we can defeat these heartless thief's stealing of the innocent 🙏 bless you sweetie
I just found your channel and it is fantastic. It hits close to home because my 90 year old dad lost $30,000 to the McAfee scam last year. He normally calls me whenever he has a question, but I was in the middle of moving and he "didn't want to bother me". We tried working with BofA and they were worthless. Why they allowed 30K to be wire transferred to Hong Kong is beyond belief. I have been in the IT business for the past 40 years and you have inspired me to volunteer to do this kind of work when I retire in a year or two. I already mess with the scammers when they call me, but you take it to the ultimate level. Anyway, I just want to say thanks and keep up the great work.
As someone who works at a bank I’m horrified that they allowed this poor woman to take that amount out without any security or checks… Thank you for doing this for her the amount of cases I get where people have their lives ruined from scams upsets be so much so I’m glad to see there are people who genuinely care and want to make the world a better place ❤
The line between "security" and hassle is a blur. If you want to withdraw _your_ money from a bank, I could argue that (after verifying your identity) making it hard to get _your_ money is an unwanted hassle. It is _your_ money, and you should be able to withdraw it for any reason at anytime with no hassle from the bank. I appreciate some simple questions to help protect victims of crime, but after that, let the customer do what they want.
@@Bambus48 Yes, good point. But when does that go too far? If you have $100k in the bank and try to withdraw $30k to buy a boat, or something, and the bank won't give you *your* money for "security reasons". That's a problem right? My friend (with a lot of money) was explaining how his bank allows him to deposit hundreds of thousands as often as he wanted, but was limited to $25k withdraw per day. He was mad because he said it will take him 2 weeks to get all his money back. That seem "wrong" to me. That's not security; that's hassle.
@@TonyPombo To be fair, I think the idea of withdrawing large amounts should always be looked at with scrutiny. I'll admit I don't have much experience with multiple banks, but I'd be surprised if closing an account to open another one would require you physically withdrawing all the money and moving it when you could probably just transfer it all by signing a few papers at both banks in person. I mean, are people really trucking around tens of thousands of dollars in cash whenever they move banks?
@@Player_Redacted "are people really trucking around tens of thousands of dollars in cash whenever they move banks" No, you would receive a cashier's check that you take to the new bank. You could do a wire transfer to the new bank, but that can cost several hundred dollars and requires you to keep the old account open for a while. Another issue: define "large amounts". If you have $100,000 and you decide to withdraw $50k, is that large? What you have $6 million in that account? Is $50k still large? So ya know, a cahier's check written to "cash" is equivalent to cash. So getting a "large' cashier's check is as _concerning_ as cash. Basically, I like freedom. Once I authenticate who I am, and I've listened to a quick "beware of scammers PSA", the bank should get out of the way and give me _my_ money.
My mom almost fell victim to some scammers but she remembered that I had told her to NEVER allow anyone but me to remotely access her computer so she told them that i would call them back since i handle all their computer needs.
@IDABAYAREA650I yes we do! Wish there was a way to make it where a password has to be entered before any applications are downloaded. This way caregivers could set one and lock that ability.
I'm pretty sure there is parental guidance software that turns off downloads for both computers and phones that you could easily repurpose for the elderly. We had one for our school computers and that was 2 decades ago.
Respect to that clerk 1000% It never ceases to amaze me how quickly people will work together. Kudos to Barbara, she listened to her instincts! Guaranteed she made her son proud. I remember when this operation was a lot smaller. You guys are killing it!

It's a fine line between trying to keep them safe and denying them legitimate access to their hard earned money. They can ask questions but them.thr scammers will just advise them to lie and say it's for an emergency or something.

You and your team deserve far more recognition for the work you do. You are literally saving people. There is no higher calling in this world than helping and saving people. You guys rock.
The biggest issue would seem to be that almost all the scammers are based out of India, and the police there are very easy to buy, so they look the other way while these guys are running their scams. The US police can only do so much.
There are international law enforcers and anti terrorist organisations. The international community needs to get with the 21st century and develop robust international anti-scamming laws and punishments. I work for a large international humanitarian organisation and I am sure that it's possible.
Did you hear about this lady that was being scammed by the same exact scam? She was being scammed for $40,000! She was depositing the money on a bitcoin machine and some lady got suspicious and called the cops. They took 20k from her and she managed to keep the other $20k. It was also an old lady
There was a video on PoliceActivity where an elderly lady was feeding a bitcoin machine with money while facetiming the scammer, luckily the Police were called by a good samaritan and he intercepted her and stopped her just in time... The scammer proceeded to fire off abuse at the Officer...
As an Indian, this is pathetic on part of the scammers. Continue with your good work, I feel someday there will be serious consequences for these jerks!
S*** even my heart was pounding during that call. All I could think about, this could have been my grandmother, she passed 2 years on the 30th. All i could think about was nanny. Can't lie, the conversation you had with Barb, I was getting choked up 😞 You are a f****n hero bud - don't EVER forget that!
I remember before my grandma passed a couple years ago, she would receive scam calls all the time but I listened in on one and asked her who it was from and knew immediately. I'm glad I was able to tell her they were scams, no company would ever call and ask for personal info or bitcoin transfers. Ever since then she would answer with "I know you're a scammer, now quit calling me!" It's just horrible how people as horrible as this exist out there..preying on the most vulnerable. Whenever I watch videos like this it always reminds me of her, just glad I was able to prevent her from ever falling for it. Pierogi is doing amazing work.
Thank you for helping Barb. My father in law gave away over 2m to scammers. It makes me sick how a man had plenty of money to just coast to the finish line and now has nothing. The banks, fbi, local police have done nothing.
The female scammer did the scammers no favors with her broken English and not making any sense. I'm glad she wised up, likely when she saw the liquor store and finally realized how sketch it all seemed. You are saving people's livelihoods. Thank you.
I don’t know what’s more satisfying to watch, you stopping theses scams in real time or messing with scammers for hours and getting them pissed off/ scared. Either way great work and keep it up
That poor lady. I could cry for her. Thankfully she had the insight to start to question what was happening to her. Thank you Pierogi for being her knight in shining armour. These scammers are truly heartless with no concern for anything except to line their own pockets. I hope Karma does exist for them.
That store clerk is the man!!!! You just know he's the type of dude who always has a smile on his face when serving customers and remembers his regulars. What a legend of a human.
I am retired. About 4 years ago I called my "antivirus" provider to ask a question, but somehow I got the wrong people. They said they were the antivirus company, but I eventually figured out that they were not. However, before I figured it out, they got into my computer and I was watching my computer be controlled by someone else. I quickly got a very bad feeling. After getting away from these "bad guys" I immediately called my bank and told them what happened. They put a red-flag onto my account, and I also quit online banking of all kinds. After watching this video, I think I will never do online banking again. That was a good 4 years ago and so far I have not had anything happen to my account. I hope it stays that way.
As someone hurtling towards "retirement age," this is why I refuse the "convenience" of "smart" phones and online banking. I also grew up with a healthy suspicion of people and their claims - especially when someone calls up to tell me my car is on the southern border of Texas. I have also learned how to swear fluently in Hindi and flame the caller and their families. I get them mad enough to call me back - which COSTS them money.
@@davidburke709 It doesn't cost them anything, the calls are free using internet. Online banking is very safe unless YOU give your personal information away to scammers.
While I do use online banking, what they installed was likely Connectwise, which in my view is nothing more a Trojan itself. It boots with the computer and you have no warning it's running. I would have an IT person check. I know exactly where it exists. Software like that should not exist.
Good thinking :) Yeah you should be fine. Banks have their issues of course, but still pretty safe overall. Glad you caught on ! My mom's also retired a few years ago from a position in logistics, and she's quick to catch on if something feels off. I'm glad I don't have to worry about her entire savings being stolen. She has them in a standard physical bank, and hangs up on people trying to sell her stuff she doesn't need, so if she's ever in contact with actual scammers, lord help them haha! :D
When you're able to stop these things happening in real time makes me really happy. My mum recently almost got scammed and I was able to tell because of watching your videos and recognising the things that they do.

Years ago my grandmother received a call from scammers letting her know that I was in a foreign country and had been arrested, and that she needed to take out cash and pay for my bail. Luckily she called my mother and my aunt who called me, and we got her to hang up and not call back. But before she knew it was a scam she was scared and in tears…it hurt my heart to see and hear. So, thank you for everything you guys do because that fear is real.
It's getting worse because now they can sample your voice and basically talk to your grandmother spoofing them and make it more convincing. Every family needs a "challenge" word where you say a given word or phrase and if they don't respond properly, you know its a scam.
When me and my mom heard about that scam we arranged a question for her to ask that only I would know the answer to. That way if scammers ever call her she'll know if it's me or not.
Those are really great ideas to combat the issue! It sucks when they play on someone’s heartstrings with little to no care at all about how it impacts that person or their family. I was so glad to see the woman in the video didn’t end up spending much needed money.

She got suspicious and started asking questions which allowed you time to get her on the phone. Love that you are going to help people that have already been scammed. Much love to Pierogi and the SP team. ❤❤❤
Amazing save! Unfortunately she did not call her son first who works at bank! Those of us with elderly parents, tell them to doublecheck with you for any strange hacking, refund, or sending payment. Yeah the coin machine and gift/debit card people know they are facilitating theft. They are hiding behind plausible deniability. The government mandated warnings on cigarettes, they should do the same in these industries. Bank employees should ALWAYS warn older depositors taking out large quantities of cash.
Ours have warning signs where I live.
And FedEx offices.
My father who is 77yrs old has lost over $45,000 to a relationship scammer but he still doesn't believe that she doesn't exist. It's so frustrating and heartbreaking to convince him otherwise.
Wow! Take control over his accounts!
You need to get power of attorney over your father's finances before he loses everything.
"So how much do you charge?"
"ZERO, I dont want anything!"
The pure elation at 16:17 is so frickin awesome. You guys deserve every bit of that rush, man. Keep on keepin on!!!
It’s the fact that they wanted ALL the money. Absolutely heartless.
You deserve a medal!
Thank you for all you do.
did you lose the money?
@@murky1905she literally just wrote that it happened to me for 28k and afterwards the son turned her on to this channel
So sadly, yes.
@@murky1905 Yeah, she lost it, later her son showed her this channel, and she regrets not knowing about it sooner. This is my understanding on what she typed.
Unfortunately, yes.
Way to go. We need more people like you out there helping Pierogi. 😉
Good on you. You were the Main Man that day for sure hehe
Awesome!
Well done. The more people know, the better.
You are awesome! Thank you!!!
When she asked “what do you charge?” And he said “Zero” I lost it. You’re doing gods work P and team. Thank you
That got me, too. So proud of Perogi and his team.
Pierogi is real. Just watch his emotions at the end of this video. He wouldn't cry if he wasn't real.
Have your aunt email Pierogi at the email he gave at the end of this video. Maybe they can help her.
Clearly he is real...he is not asking those people for anything.
There are scammers on here...who would try to make us believe he is not real.
@@donnabonn1892 So true. I have seen some of these videos too, trying to put Pierogi as hacker scammer.

The thing is, you put that money in the bank for the security. What if I am held by gunpoint or something.
*We need to all tell our family members that are vulnerable for these Scams!!!*
@IDABAYAREA650I yes we do! Wish there was a way to make it where a password has to be entered before any applications are downloaded. This way caregivers could set one and lock that ability.
They have that for kids phones don't they? Sounds like that could be used for adults as well.
@jerseyjoyride1316 kids phones yes but as far as know there's nothing for computers.
I'm pretty sure there is parental guidance software that turns off downloads for both computers and phones that you could easily repurpose for the elderly.
We had one for our school computers and that was 2 decades ago.

It's a fine line between trying to keep them safe and denying them legitimate access to their hard earned money. They can ask questions but them.thr scammers will just advise them to lie and say it's for an emergency or something.
@@nataliekubus1041 it's still not wrong for them to ask..noone will withdraw 10k$ for emergency. You can pay via card in hospitals. So it's suspicious. Asking won't hurt. A customer will trust the bank more

As we all age and, perhaps, become less engaged and aware of the technology it is absolutely imperative that we have people in our corner helping us stay safe. If there is a group like this in Toronto I would love to volunteer my time and energy in anyway I can (I'll frigging mop the floors of your office) to help the people that are helping the people.
Imagine the impact if we had a government agency doing this sort of work, in addition to putting out PSAs to prevent citizens from getting scammed.
That's a total fact
add it to homeland security
Dont know why this isn’t a thing
private companies can always handle things faster and with less corruption, if he had the right financial backing he could create something bigger than anything the govt could do
I don’t think it will be a thing because they don’t care about doing good. It is good money getting all that data and selling it to scammer companies

Hello
Barb is a champion, what a lady! And good job protecting people!
The Scammer Payback team and store clerk are heroes this world needs.
More law enforcement needs to get involved in real time to support these heroes
I agree. They're not likely to. "Victimless crime"
The biggest issue would seem to be that almost all the scammers are based out of India, and the police there are very easy to buy, so they look the other way while these guys are running their scams. The US police can only do so much.
They're too busy protecting the interests of the ruling class 🤷♂️
@@jnelsoninjax Either India or Africa....
The store clerk deserves a raise big time
There was a video on PoliceActivity where an elderly lady was feeding a bitcoin machine with money while facetiming the scammer, luckily the Police were called by a good samaritan and he intercepted her and stopped her just in time... The scammer proceeded to fire off abuse at the Officer...

As a much younger person, I also think many other things online are unnecessary and also sometimes worse.
@@davidburke709
It doesn't cost them anything, the calls are free using internet.

I got a message from my nephew, saying he was in trouble and needed money fast, obviously a scam, my sister got the same message, I hate scammers.
What a terrible thing to do to someone, especially Grandma.
This is so so maddening.
I think the only risk when you’re talking to the clerk, telling him she has $15,000 in cash ….but…there’s nothing to lose….
there isn't many people out there who care anymore..but .Perogi is so passionate about his work...we need more people like him in this world right now.
