As of now, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are 17. Ruby was admitted to Beacon 2 years early and is 15. When Ruby met Ozpin, she was attending Signal, a combat school to prepare prospective huntsmen and huntresses to try out for and potentially attend an academy, like Beacon. Most characters are an allusion to a fairy tale, myth, or heroic story. Hopefully no one spoils anything that could mess with your enjoyment. And yes, the chapter length is mostly a volume 1 thing, with several longer "episodes" broken in to 2 parts to make shorter episodes. Ideally you would want to watch both parts in a single viewing as they are usually connected in theme, but it's not absolutely necessary.

9:04 most characters are based off of some sort of fairytale or classic literature. Like Ruby is based off Little Red Riding Hood, and Weiss, Blake, and Yang are all based off Brothers Grimm girls too. Several characters are inspired by Wizard of Oz, and others are inspired by legends and historical figures. Its fun trying to figure out the inspirations.
