Mealy Bugs are the pain of us plant lovers lives, arghhh I hate them and its always such a challenge to keep them away, and I am convinced they come out of thin air LOL! I noticed Mealies on my Hoyas again and Spider mites have attacked my Lophs in the polytunnel and made them look so scabby now, Mealies are so hard to spot as they hide so well and disguise themselves in the areoles, and root mealies are even worse, and they love the dry soil at this time of year, I love to squash them its so satisfying, thanks so much for sharing your tips on how to gt rid of them and the tip with the essential oil Claire, and hope you can get rid of these little horrors for good, Sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Hans and me from across the Sea XXXX
Thanks so much Lyn for watching and for your comment... Yes they do seem to come from out of nowhere these blasted mealy Bugs and spider mites 😉😆 I did see your Lophophora... Have got to catch up on my comments for everyones videos 🙉 So sad to see Spider mite damage too, it devistates perfectly beautiful specimens, and usually before we notice them 🌵⛄🎄🌵
Omg! 😱 seems like these pests are having a feast even at this time of year. Fortunately, sellers here in SG are responsible enough to treat the plants with fungicide and pesticide before they sell them but you can never be careful enough so i make sure i soak them again in that solution before i pot up my new plants. I battle fungus here in my side of the world because of high humidity and this time is the rainy season. Thank you for the awesome tips, Claire. ❤️🌸🌺🌼🌵❤️
A lot of people are having pest problems this winter it seems, myself included. I hate mealybugs with a passion, they almost made me quit collecting cacti and succulents. Hope you manage to get rid of them all Claire, from Edith & myself, have a wonderful day 🌵☀️🌺🌸🌼🏜
OH MY GOODNESS... These mealy Bugs were having a mothers meeting on the Kyodama before I killed most of them before filming 🤢 It's a pain but building up a collection of Cactus means bringing in these bugs... Its only Plants from this year so won't be getting so many cactus next year and so the Bugs should be pretty much banished and easier to keep on top of... I hope 😆 Thanks for your comment and for watching and have a great day/evening 😁🎄⛄🌵🌄🏜️

Hello from Atlanta. I have been doing some research on Mealy Bugs, so I thought I would see how you handled them. This is a great video, and I respect your narrative and attention to detail. Thanks for your time.
They are very cringing to look at in a cluster 🤮 I wish I had took photos of them on the top dressing BEFORE I started pulverising them... they look like they were on holiday, so many! Thanks for watching and for your comment Ana , have a great day/evening 😊🌵🎄⛄👍🏻
Thank you for watching, yes a good rinse and a scrub, if it has less spines, is good, the addition of an essential oil helps kill them too. I still have this cactus plant, so far it's been okay. 👍🏻🙂🌵
I’m so glad you shared this Claire. A few weeks ago I did the same to my parodia as I couldn’t get rid of the dreaded mealies. I used to think that it was a bit much washing cactis.....and then I got mealies 🤣 those pesky critters!! Please keep us updated with how they go 👍🏻
That's what I used to think and now Its such a good way to really sort out some infested cactus, some are easier than others depending on the genus, but yes sometimes you just have to resort to these extreme measures and we learn so much now in the cacti community through You Tube and really brings cacti care and growing to the forefront for everyone to learn 😆 Thank so much for watching and I hope your Opuntia is okay, as these can be difficult to handle for treating Pests 🌵🎄⛄🌵😊
Aw, so sorry for that problem! This year's climatology seems to be perfect for pests. I'm also having my first battles amongst this incredible animals and I also use the washing (I use other soap but it's the same effect). I also sprinkle the cinnamon powder since I saw that at Maria's garden (for Adenium) here in RUclips. Thank you for sharing the use of essential oil! I've never thought it could be used in my plants. Good luck for the recovery and merry Christmas to you and your family!🤗🌺🌵☮️🎄💕
Thank you for watching and for your comment... 😊👍🏻 Yes Cinnamon Oil is great... I've done a couple of videos mentioning its use and safety precautions on how to use it... Wow! You also watch Maria's Garden... Ive been watching her for ages, absolutely LOVE her channel she's a wealth of information... And it was her who got me into the cinnamon powder too 😆 Haven't quite started using the Epsom Salt yet though 🤣 Have a great day... And I'm hopefully winning thd battle of those Mealy Bugs😉 👍🏻🌵⛄🎄
@@CactusCove Yes! I saw your previous recommendation about the essence. I've used the Epsom salt for a long time (Here we call it magnesium salt -sulfur kind of magnesium salt, there are many kinds of magnesium-), I use it for my Hostas, Freesias and Clivias, and for edible plants too (culinary herbs and greens). Now I realize that I have a lot of videos from Maria to see. That's why my Adeniums are stressed 😅. Have a nice week!😘
Thank you for this excellent video. It is precisely what I needed to see right now. I just got some bare-root Echinopsis pups with root systems that are much more extensive than I had anticipated. I've been wondering how I could wash them to stop any pest problems before they begin, so this was very useful. I know that winter is not the best time to pot cacti, so won't order any more.
Great video! I've been having issues with mealybugs, but it's not really a huge visible infestation. They kind of just popup every so often on the same plants (although I found one on a different plant today). I'm just managing them as I see them with alcohol. I'm considering doing a bunch of repotting now, but not sure how helpful that is if they're living in the crevices of the plant itself since that's where they tend to popup for me 😞.
Hello Gabrielle! 😊 I've watched a few of your videos just now... Thanks so much for your comment and for watching my video...😁 Well the Mealy Bugs just love appearing from nowhere it seems! 😆 Carry on dabbing them off as you have been doing with alcohol (they could be just strays wandering and not laid eggs yet!), but I think to put your mind at rest, if you really don't fancy changing the soil/Repotting then might I suggest, just take the cactus and root ball out of the pot carefully just to make a visual inspection all around the soil/root area without disturbing, just to see if there are any signs of them in the soil around the edges, also look underneath the pot itself for white patches... If you can definitely see signs then probably a complete soil change, if not any signs, then slide plant back into its pot and keep treating as you have been, until a better time to repot, but depending on time of year you might not want to do that now, unless like my case it was an infestation and an emergency. If its cactus Plants then yes the Mealy bugs hide very well, and can be at all stages of growth so we think they're gone when they are not (eggs, tiny nymphs, juveniles, adults) so the cycle continues 🤦♀️ So in addition to you using the alcohol, maybe you can do a soil drench using your chosen measure such as neem oil I've seen used, I use cinnamon oil myself, when it's the RIGHT time for you to begin your watering routine again, for especially the cactus, so you will exterminate any soil Pests over a few waterings, that's if you really don't want to repot certain plants for whatever reason. Or in addition to alcohol... spray the plant body, if you don't like off the shelf sprays, use a more friendly homemade alternative, but don't spray any plants that have that waxy/farina type coating otherwise it ruins the look. Depending on time of year, you mention overwintering your plants at the moment, you might want to just keep doing what your doing until it's the right time of year for you to do a full check and repot if needed with clean potting substrate. Just a note, If you use a soil based media (I don't) then it helps to sterilise it before using because it can be infected with soil borne pests right from the start aswell. So I use coco Coir or heat treated Bark chips as my alternative to 'Soils'. Hope this helps a little bit. 🙄 I find the problem with bugs is very obvious always when I buy ALOT of new Cactus in a short amount of time because they are the culprits and bring the Pests into the home... once your plants are settled and been treated for a while then the Bugs come to a bit of a halt and it's just the odd one or two that have issues as would naturally be the case. I personally leave my cactus to soak usually for upto an hour, just to be extra sure it's killed off the bugs, also I use a toothbrush for the cactus base and roots to brush over them too, and a fine haired art paintbrush is excellent for brushing in between the gaps and tubercles in hard to reach areas to help dislodge dead mealies that might not wash off afterwards, also its gentler so not to damage the spines too much. Using a grow light in addition to natural light will be very good for your cactus especially if it's only getting a few hours of natural sun. Have only just seen this message, sorry for late reply. But, in the dormant season, we are now in this time (here in uk), you can still use your grow lights, just keep them on for less time, to mimic the reduced amount of real sunlight that we have over autumn and winter, this applies if you're growing cactus full time inside your home, like I do. I don't have the option of keeping them in a dark room, so I continue to give light over autumn and winter just less of it. 👍🏻🙂🌵
"Unboxing video".... I see many channels where people are constantly accepting cactus into their collection, putting them straight in amongst other plants. Some channels have major infestations of all their cactus yet keep publishing videos about new plants being added again and again.

🤮🤢😱😆🤣 You should have seen the pile of them before I started filming them on the top dressing 😬
Can I use any alcohol? Thanks!
I would recommend using the isopropyl alcohol. At a strength of 50 or upto 70% will kill most, if not all, bugs in direct contact. You can use higher strength but be careful.
Use it on plants just after watering so the cactus or succulent is hydrated to help avoid any reactions. Don't use on plants in sunlight. Use when grow lights are off or when plants are not in sun.
Test carefully on new plants to make sure no bad effects. Otherwise Isopropyl alcohol is a very safe product to use on most plants.
I would not recommend the gel alcohol as can be a bit greasy or gloopy but I have used it before when I've ran out of products as emergency.
Good luck.
