- Here's a 1990's Sony Walkman WM-FX50 personal stereo tape player & radio which "sort of" works. In one tape direction it works fine but in the other it does nothing but make a clicking nose.
In this video, I look at the symptom, disassemble the case and replace the belt.
The replacement belt came from eBay seller "Mana_Tree" and cost under $10 USD.

Very helpful thanks Mr_BB. Belt-Path now clear to me (wasn't obvious) for my Sony WM-GX51, which is essentially the same device but incorporates digital radio operation. Wish I observed your video 2 weeks ago, as I struggled with some dismantling (that you nailed well) - Hopefully the minor damage I've inflicted hasn't disrupted my repair goals. The belt on mine had completely perished (falling into ~30 seperate fragile pieces), but I have ordered a new belt from DeckTech. I'll come back when I attain my re-assembly (or not)! Regards. 🥝🐐.
I’m very happy that it was helpful. I remember thinking at the time that ease of repair was not in Sony’s “top 10” design priorities. Some Walkmans are more a cruel puzzle than tape player. Let me know how you make out once the belt arrives!
Thank you for your clear demonstration. Just what I need, because I ordered a non-functioning WM-EX50 and 2 replacement belts. Just to be sure ;-)
I’m very happy my video was helpful to you.
can u tell me the belt lengh?
I had tried to look it up in the PRB Belt Cross Reference (www.russellind.com/client/download/PRB_Belt_XRef.pdf ) to get the length and profile but it wasn't in there. I ended up just ordering one to fit the WM-FX50 off eBay. It wasn't much money.
my belt was like a carbon grase
Yup, I’ve seen belts that have been reduced to greasy black goo that is adhered to the pulleys. And others that look & feel ok but are just a bit loose. Maybe it’s storage conditions or just luck…
