  • How to trim a fretboard to width on cigar box guitar neck. I use a no. 4 plane, as it is the quickest and easiest way of doing the job. You get a good result with the minimum of fuss. I think a lot of people fight shy of getting to grips with traditional tools such as the hand plane, and try getting by by filing, sanding or even power tools to do ths most basic and simple of tasks. I did refer to it as "jack" plane, but in fact it is a smoothing plane - jack planes are the next size up, i.e. a no. 5.

    Thank you I have a fretboard coming that is pre-cut..a little wider then my neck.. Did know how trip it.. Thanks for taking your time and posting this

      Planing should be easy, but only if your plane is set up right. The blade needs to be sharp - REALLY sharp, and the blade needs to be set so that there's only a very little projection to take fine shavings. Setting up the tool right is 90% of the job, and you need to be checking it and sharpening it regularly.
