The citizen of each nation on average thinks highly of each other. It's different with south asia and east asia. For example, India vs Pakistan for south asia or Japan vs South Korea for east asia. While government-wise these countries seems to be fine, their citizen have a lot of hate for each other steming from past conflicts. South east asia are also blessed with fertile lands and other natural resources while also not being overpopulated. If I'm gonna bet which region are going to be developed first, I'm betting for south east asia. Though, India also got good prospects if we are not counting for the whole region.

That's why people tend to not refer south asian as "asian" since they are phenotypically different(they look different) Geographically speaking, arabs are also asian and europeans too are also asian. Culturally speaking, South Asia did influence EA/SEA through buddhism, but other than the religion itself, EA and SEA are vastly different from South Asia even in the variation of buddhism.
