Our Favorite Harley-Davidson Softail Suspension Upgrade

- Suspension in the Harley-Davidson world is always a hot topic and heavily debated one. Since the frame change on the Softail family motorcycles in 2018, many of the major suspension companies have developed a rear mono shock and a drop-in solution for the front forks. We were lucky enough to have an inside man (Stefan) to get us the first ever Wilber's suspension for the softail that we installed on Steve Garcia's Low Rider S. Stefan of Stefan's Garage gives us all the details and the Laidlaw's Crew take the bike for a spin.

I am so embarrassed, I was only idling this beast😁. Great video Matt, as always. You guys at Laidlaw's will always be my (Harley-) valentines.
The expectation is now set. I'll see you every year now on Valentines day with new toys.
Job Well Done!
I would like to petition the Federal Government to broadcast a nation wide alert on our cell phone when Stefan visits the United States. I mean, come on guys, this after all is a big deal !!!
🤣
Ikr, it's like we're being invaded with excellence.
He’s a commercial airline pilot I do believe.
Totally agree
Great to see Stefan back with the Laidlaw crew for yet another Wilbers install. Definitely the best suspension for HD bikes to enhance your ride.
It’s always fun having Stefan around.
I’ve had Wilber’s installed. It was then and still is now, the best upgrade I’ve made. 😁
Yea Wilber’s suspension is just plain great stuff.
Wilbers is on my wishlist! Your videos have validated that it is the suspension I want.
It's hard to beat. Good all-around stuff
Thank you for that review, Matt. Informative yet not boring, good looking product too. It’s been my observation that suspension is probably the most overlooked accessory for modification of your new ride.(I am guilty, too) Pipes and cams are evident to all lookers, but shocks have the most impact to ride quality.
Very true. Thanks for the comment man. I appreciate you watching.
Matt! It's because of this channel I learned about Wilbers! My kit just arrived here in Dallas, I'm getting it installed soon!
I love Wilbers… Mickey recommend them, walked up to Brandon and ordered them, put them on my 17 RG, love them!
Always good to get the results you expect when you spend the hard earned money.
So glad it worked out for you!
I’ve had many Harleys over the years and tried all the other brands of shocks.
After seeing Stefan and Danny install Wilbers, I put them on my Road King.
They are the best shock / suspension ever.
I had a similar experience. Wilbers makes good stuff
Great information, I’m considering installing this suspension on my bike now ! 🔥🔥
Stefan is my spirit animal
Steve, now I know the defination of agressive rider style! 🤣
Clearly in Germany they actually learn how to ride these things slow without having landing gear out ..
Nice u turn .. ride thru the shop and alley confidently with feet up on the Pegs
Nice to see
Gotta love the Wilburs guy
I don’t think anyone could not like this guy.
Man.. when he fire up the bike he was chuffed to bits about the sound.
Thanks for the flowers and yes, I was scared waking up the beast. But credits to @besthebossofyourmotorcycle , Robert taught me how to keep the gear up during slow speed.
“We are law abiding citizens “ proceeds to do an illegal u-turn on double yellow lines 😂
😂😂😂
😁
Hi Mr. Matt! Thank you for another wonderful information filled video! Great job!!
Always great to see Mr. Stefan and your team!
If you or Mr. Stefan ever want to visit us in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; please know our door is always open and welcome to stay! Canadian Rockies are awesome beautiful riding experience!!
Thanks for the invitation, first you have to convince my big boss to offer flights from Munich to Calgary
@@stefansgarage3014
Hi Mr. Stefan! Thank you for your kind reply!! LoL, we thought you are the Boss??
We will be happy to convince your boss that you are needed here in Calgary for important marketing influence!! Hopefully this will be convincing and allows you to (visit) do "Marketing"!
Steves bike is class! Could you do a bike check some day?
Already did. I link the video in a card. Search Steve’s Low Rider s in RUclips.
Greetings from Germany. WILBERS has very good reputaion here in Germany, they also meet individual requirements👍🏻
I love Steve’s bike!
Wilbers is the best. For Comfort and Racing. The swedish firm is a niche specialist on GP level racing.
Clearly, this solution should be applicable to other Softail like suspension architectures, I know the devil is in the details and the setup and miles testing, but principally there’s no reason why the NIVOMAT shouldn’t be available for other bikes, too.
Don’t forget both front and rear need to have aligned suspensions in tune to establish the wonderful balance this bike deserves. It’s so annoying if they’re not equally good.
Just got a 24 street glide. Was watching your older vids with Stefan on the Wilbers suspension. Definitely what i want to add as a first upgrade
Kits for the 2024 Street and Road Glides have just been approved. I got the first in today, just waiting for the bike to arrive. I will make a video on the install.
Stefan is all class!
Thanks for the flowers, I worked a little on my English during the last four years😁
It's hard not to like him. I've tried, cant do it.
@@MattLaidlaw 🤣👍
I own two CVO Road Glides, but I would take this bike in a nano second.
First try the Nivomat on one of the CVOs. I put a Wilbers on my 2019 CVO Road Glide and that started this whole journey 5 years ago.
I hope you didn’t have as much trouble fitting the Wilber Rear Monoshock Unit as I did the SE Ohlin Unit - nightmare. However, transformational, now I will have to do the front as I didn’t appreciate how bad that was. Stephan was very polite but the H-D units are rubbish and I am not sure how acceptable that is on such an expensive bike.
Interesting I think we have done some Ohlins as well but I didn't hear if our techs had a hard time getting them in or not. I'll have to check that out next time.
as usuall a very nice video i myself live in germany and heard only good things about Wilbers shock absorbers
I might have to pick this up.
Simply Matt ... that was greatful
Hey, don't forget the older bikes like 😉 the years 2003 Heritage Softail 😅
I hope someone told Stefan we are law-abiding citizens but, the left lane is for crime 🤣
My second home is the left lane😏
Great video as usual. Lovely bike.
Awesome to see Wilbers now have an offering for the softails. Heard nothing but good things about their touring suspension. From the ending comments, it seems as though you feel Ohlins would be a better fit for someone who rides solo, and does mainly agressive canyon riding. Is that a fair assesment?
It would be close but yes, Ohlins would be better to really dial your setting for race application.
You can also get conventional shocks from Wilbers which come nearly completely dialed in from factory. And in contrast to Ohlins and every other brand, they even put a custom spring AND shim stack into your shock from factory. No extra costs or whatsoever.
seriously wanna get this now lol
laidlaw laying it down. Hollywood celebrity Stefan (from SNL?) and the paint job on troublemaker is killer USA!
SNL?
@@stefansgarage3014 Saturday night live has a skit and Stefan tells you the latest party places in New York City 😳😜🤣
@@stefansgarage3014 I thought maybe stefon from Saturday night live was you in your younger days.... 😁
@@donbennett9201 Now I got it👍🏻
Matt would you do a Shootout? Ohlin's VS Legends Vs the new German set-up?
great share fam!!!!
Big G'day Stephan & Matt from Down Under 🇦🇺
Braapp BRRAAAPPPP ❗
Love ya work & with setting up the Wilbers suspension by the KING himself 👍💪like & following his channel too🖤🧡🖤
Do they make something for us Dyna Bro's? I got a FXDB Dyna Streetbob 2017...
May all your days be Harley days
💪🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤💪
Safe travels 🙏♥️🐾🐾🇦🇺
Thanks for the comment mate. I don’t know if they have dyna suspension. Maybe Stefan will comment in here and answer that one.
Sick machine,sehr geil
Stefan put the number 1 suspension of the 2024 Piggy Back Wilburs on “Be the Boss of your Motorcycle” Robert Simmons. Nice… can’t afford the Wilburs product, had to stick with the Screamin Eagle Ohlins.
They are stiffer and more complicated to operate, but for sure they'll make You happy as well. Definitely change out the front as well, to experience the full benefit.
Better than the stock FXLRST suspension?
💯 I hear nothing but great reports of the Wilbers Suspension 💪💪💪
Million Dollar Bogan (RUclipsr) has them on his bike & he rides in all terrain..... & they are the bestest
Yes. Its better than the stock FLTRXST
I want one! I have a 2018 Deluxe.
Then get it!!!😉
Was that a 13" shock? I didn't catch it
Matt amazing content thanks so much but please fix that mic brother.
Yea, I was using the camera Audio which is trash. I had to edit it post and it kinda sounds like shit. Sorry about that
We are supposed to believe this is great suspension when all we see is people opening a throttle in a straight line on nice smooth highways. How about some shots of twisty bumpy roads.
Is that a prototype exhaust from V&H?
2 up in the video would have been 👍
With my low rider s the rear shock is the other way around, with the spring at the rear wheel end 🤔
Is it a Wilbers Nivomat self leveling shock? Or a Wilbers regular shock? Or a different brand?
I've been looking to upgrade, I've been looking at Olins but this looks better, what do they run price wise and do i get them directly from you?
With the parts and labor it’s probably north of 2k. Yes, you can order it directly from us. Call Steve in our service department he can get you an exact quote. Thanks man
@@MattLaidlaw That is considerably less than Olin's, I live on Maui so obviously the installment would be here but definitely purchase from you, thank you sir!
I own a RKS ‘23 and I doubt to buy Wilbers. It cost 💲2800 including mounting here in holland!!! Btw next Tuesday is fly with LH 2303 from Amsterdam to Munich,… are you flying Stefan?😂😂
A 23 RKS should still be low mileage, I would consider riding to Wilbers, they are at the Dutch-German border and offer install service for 250€. You can enjoy a coffee in the meantime with your fellow dutchman Benny Wilbers. Or you take your King as carry on luggage and we do the install in MUC.
I wish Ohlins would make a shock for softtails best on the market
They do make one
My 2020 Fatboy needs this!!
Then get it!😉
Wunderbar but for the price Harley charge why don't they put decent suspension on the bikes from stock?
It is more than decent from the factory.
Great Bro. Just When I thought I was Done spending money on the Fat Boy. LOL!!
You're never done! Once You're done, You get a new Harley...🤣
@@stefansgarage3014 lmao so true. Already itching to get a RKS 🤦🏽♂️🤣
@@stefansgarage3014 definitely see an order going in soon. I’m a fat guy and the Stock set up is killing me.
@@HarleyFatBoyJr You will love the Nivomat. Give them a call, some parts had been on backorder and will be airlifted, they should arrive in Jersey in the second week of May.
@@stefansgarage3014 definitely look into it. Appreciate you. Great job in the video too. 🤙🏾🙏🏾
I know the Wilbers stuff is good however I don't get how everyone is so taken with a suspension test on mostly nice roads. 😅
For the not so perfect roads, we have M$B's Mexico and South America trip. Shows the durability of Harleys and the Wilbers Nivomat (and of course Danny!)
So after you spend 35 or $40,000 on a second rate suspension, they have an upgrade nice
Now I can really see why they did so well in WW2
🤣
🤘⚡️🤘✨✨✨✨
Terrible “music” in the background, it is enough with engine sound and Matts product analysis 😀👍
HOT!!!
Why cant Harley make a shock or suspension that actually works?
For the money the bikes cost you would expect that
The stock suspension does work😉! With aftermarket you can take it to the next level, at a price point.
Why do you buy a bike that needs upgrades ??? If HD did it right from the start ??? I owned one a few years back what a piece of shit 😅
Had my 1000 Road King Classic stolen from hidden beaches resort ,Blythe,Ca 3 weeks ago...vin 1HD1FRW11YY627101 ,spread the word.
