Honestly, I sympathize with Shax and any one who is ESL and has tried to work out English vowels (stupid vowel shift). Toast as "toste" follows the same pattern as taste, which is correct. I tutor kids in English and the number of ways of writing the long vowels (pain, plane, play, sleigh; breed, bead, receive; ect.) and even then the words the break every rule (bread!) ... I find myself apologizing for the insanity of English all the time.
