I think we've all gotten scared at some point of our flying career, and in this video I wanted to share how I dealt with a specific case and how you can use this example to deal with a similar situation. I'd love to hear your experience in this subject.

Hi. I did have some sketchy moments in the air. One which made me scared for hard thermals. In a 7ms climb which i was turning really agressive, As it was very small in pretty high winds. I had a moment where the glider went back and shot forward so hard, I had to brake with evrything i got and still got a front collapse. This all happened so fast and only 100m above the mountain. I am still getting used to the harder climbs. In 6ms i am not really relaxed. But i think the only way is progressing slowly, And when i do come across a big thermal like that, I try to take it and own it. And when it gets too much i go out into the valley and relax again. This way i did manage to fly in 4 to 6ms again few weeks ago😊

@@edwinlooy6551 Thanks for sharing your experience! Get used to them again progressively and like you say, if it is too much, take a break and come back.

@@joannadigrigoli, I do. Seems like the only and best way to deal with it really. I like flying so much i will never give it up. Slow progression is fine, I don't have to prove anything to anyone but myself😉 And i am still on the hunt for making longer and better flights😊 But only when it feels right👊

I think we all have sketchy events in the air and can relate to this, whether it is landing in a tree, getting rained on, or accidentally flying in the lee. Flying is such an amazing adventure but it can be really scary at times. Thanks for sharing!

Nice video on a tricky topic. I had to throw my reserve at Plan Fait years ago in what were somewhat rough conditions, but with plenty of pilots flying. I hit some turbulence and was not sure whether I could recover in time, so out went the reserve. The decision was probably correct, as I landed safely and the next day I was flying again. But the first bit of lively air scared me to the landing field. In the end it took me almost two years to feel reasonably confident in thermic conditions again.
But I simply stuck with it and accepted that I would need some time to regain my confidence. And in the end, I did. 🙂

Thanks for sharing your experience! Throwing your reserve was the right call and the proof is that you didn’t get hurt. Good job on flying the next day, that’s the way to do it.
It’s normal to feel scared at first, but time and consistency help to get back in shape.
An SIV is great to get the skills to fly in most conditions confidently. Believe me, after an SIV you’ll feel like a superhero!
      Cheers

16 weeks ago I broke my right arm in two places. 5 ribs and my scapular.
The first full stall was recovered ok then immediately into a second full stall.
This was filmed by another pilot.
Two weeks in hospital and a $20000 bill. I'm 95 percent recovered now.
    I've done 4 flights.
My confidence is not recovered yet.
I discovered structural wear in 5 locations in the wing which most probably contribed to why the second collapse did not recover.
Lesson too long between very careful wing inspections.
In terms of the knock to my confidence I don't think my accident was pilot induced.

Wow! I'm sorry to hear about this but I'm glad you're recovering. Your glider not recovering due to internal damage makes completely sense and I think you can work on the mental part rationalising that it wasn't pilot induced, so you can work your way back. Don't know if that makes sense. Take care, mate.

good topic. But still after your experience, during start you did not do any check when the wing was up, sometimes just milisenond quick check that the wind looks fine, can be enough. Relying only on good preparation of the wing on the ground is not enough.
I don't know how is it in other countries, but here when student pilot is doing forward lounching and he did not do quick check glance on the wing above him, he is not going to get his licence :-)

The glider and brakes felt good, that's why I went for it. On this take off, there's not really much room or time to look at both tips. But I guess there's always room for improvement... or maybe they should just take my licence away ;)

I'm a newbie. My beginner's book says three stages for forward launch. Inflation, control and launch. During control you should look up. With light weight gear it comes up so easy that it only takes a couple of slow steps to check the wing. Maybe you should practice looking up while launching at your easy site. The go pro does not lie 😅
