  • Devdutt Pattanaik discusses mythology, karma and his books “My Hanuman Chalisa” and “My Gita” with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra, The Arts & Ideas Club, Gurgaon on 28-August 2017.
According to Devdutt Pattanaik, Ram is not a leader because he is not leading anyone anywhere. He also believes that the key characteristics of the Hanuman Chalisa are strength and wisdom, which is what drives the iconography of Hanuman.
Pattanaik also feels that one cannot understand mythology without knowing physics and biology.
Devdutt Pattanaik is a writer and a revisionist of mythology in India. He constantly brings home how the Indian tradition is different from the West and the need for Indians to study their scriptures from their own perspective. He has authored numerous books including “My Hanuman Chalisa”, “My Gita”, and “Business Sutra: An Indian Approach to Management”. He is also known to incorporate myth into human resource management.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.
Membership to Algebra is by invitation or referral. If you know an Algebra member, ask them to put you in touch with us. For more, click HERE: www.algebratheclub.com/members...

Her question was very valid. If people think , that everything is a consequence of past life ,then no one will fight any injustice. if every harm done to you, purposefully by someone, is thought of, as past life consequence, you will never fight any injustice. This will result in the privileged always being privileged, and oppressed being oppressed. It will become a tool for oppression. People revolted to injustice, and as a result the circumstances changed. Take India's example. When we were ruled by the British, if all our freedom fighters thought that our being ruled by them, is a result of our past actions, then no one would have fought for our freedom. And we would not have seen this light of independence.

When you stand before your parents’ photo& bow, it is not before the photo but to rouse your memory to living impression in one’s memory: the outside details trivial,, important only being characteristic of the personalities: if you do not achieve this, you are before an icon. The difference is well brought by the author-speaker.

Nothing against you bro , but I think you didn't understand his concept , there can be no 'my' quran , there can be only th Qur'an , because of the nature of it , in the biblical idea of Islam , Christianity and Judaism , the authority is absolute , and the rules are universal which forces you to be homogeneous with everyone else , and therefore their scriptures are not subjective in nature . But the Hindu/Buddhist/Jain beliefs are such that , they allow one's conscience and their principles are set in such that one can use them to overcome , hunger and fear of one's animalistic nature (as in humans without knowledge are animals) .

I really appreciate this talk. Huge respect and thanks to the Mr. Pattanaik for decoding the Indian Mythology and taking us back to our original roots. In the same breath I would like to say that the hate that Ms. Chaudhury is receiving is misdirected. We agree that the British came and changed the education system and as Mr. Pattanaik says we have to be aware and accept the consequences instead of viciously attacking someone for it. A lot of our mythology was misinterpreted yes, but if we have no Ms. Chaudhury's to ask questions then there also no chance for Mr. Pattakanik's to answer and correct us. Mr Pattaknaik is reminding us again and again to not be judgmental and keep aside morality of right and wrong and look at the things just the way there are. A lot of us cleared our own doubts because this conversation happened. Putting down another person for their opinions which goes against our belief construct is exactly what Hinduism points to be wary of. I have been in your shoes and over the course of time very humbled and thankful to realize what Hinduism truly stands for by trying to practicing some of it and not just be swayed by pride of being a Hindu.

My religious freedom doesnt give me the right to comment on religious practices and customs of others. You might not respect Shri Hanuman ji...doesnt mean that you can waltz in and disrespect him. If you do there will be repercussions from those who respect Him. And if one wants to play the secular hindu card....then also one doesnt have the right to comment upon others religious beliefs. Or demean them. Hindus are passive so one can get away with it, Imagine saying that about muhammad or calling Jesus ianappropriately in a majority Islamic or Christian country...! @@piyushdas079 well, not knowing or being disinterested or being critical or agnostic of any religious idol does not equate to disrespecting them. The term "disrespect" - and the flimsy whataboutism that goes with it - is an easy resort of the obstinate ultra-right who can't stomach that your-way-is-not-the-highway and that there are many ways to understand something. Me thinks that the aforementioned obstinacy makes you want other people to respect your sentiments while you can plough straight through their rationality by the threat of repercussions. And "sikular libtards" (which, I must say are convenient choice words pulled out of a hat by supposedly passive folks) ain't lynching poor people or blowing themselves up on busses. (For all you know I could be a right-wing progressive). As far as criticising, the followers of the abrahamic faiths is concerned, I don't see their ultra-right being any less coo-coo. You make the mistake of thinking YOU have a moral high ground to THEM in the eyes of the "sikular libtards" you're flouting.

@@NidzShah-ps6kr Lady, if I dont know enough about a religion or a practice I would desist from discussing it. secondly . lynching isnt the prerogative of the ultra -right and since ultra right is as inventive as sickular liberals ..i think both stand on the same moral plate. The point I made is not about new fangled words, but the effectiveness of abrahmic religions in imposing an effective fear psychosis which prevents the so called 'rationals' from 'discussing' it. I have no idea which ideology you subscribe to, neither is it my business. I dont claim any high moral ground, neither do I cede the high moral ground to the sickular liberals. I am yet to see an open national debate on abrahmic practices which leads me to believe that the sickular liberal is just scared to touch upon Islam but is free to berate hindus ....which is convenient. The selective debate and disrespect only strengthens the view that Sickular liberals are just a bunch of snowflakes who have a very convenient moral goalpost.

ha ha the host is really smart. she insisted on pushing the "Leadership" argument in ram's context, and was planning to get modi in to show how he is not going with the hindu teachings - and how the hindus should then realize modi is going against hindu values, but devdutt didn't fall into the trap. lol
Also whats the use of rejecting Hinduism on stage when the host didn't believe in Hinduism in the first place? being born and believe are two different things. clearly she admits she doesn't know Hinduism as well and rejected it - 55:43... weird, unless i haven't understood it correctly.

to understand mythology, not as religion but as 'vocabulary' that can be applied to every aspect of both our outer and inner lives (1:30), is so liberating for those of us who grew up with literal, dogmatic and moralistic interpretations of ancient stories and symbols, that left little room for critically questioning, courageously challenging, and creatively re-interpreting ancient mythologies in relation to our own lived experiences, as people of different genders, cultures, classes and (so called) races.
to understand any character in mythology one must approach it not only intellectually, but also emotionally and from a sensual and aesthetic angle... from an evolutionarily point of view, intellect is a defense mechanism we have created to cope with our emotions (8:15)

Hanuman ji is d power source who is so controlled, calm n simple dat who doesn't crave for glory. He, the beholder of Superpower, avatar of Shiva, bhakt of Vishnu and most of all the beholder of the Highest Knowledge. And watever he did is for a purpose. Not to glorify himself. HE HAS NO SELF.

But Nonliving things also have hunger for example salt NaCl means sodium and Chloride two different elements.
when Sodium chloride is formed when sodium atoms interact with chlorine atoms. When this occurs, sodium will donate an electron (which is a negatively-charged particle) to chlorine. This makes sodium slightly positive and chlorine slightly negative. ... So chlorine complete it's octane .
don't you think this is a hunger of chlorine.

Marxists have no brains but they are against the main stream religion -- in India, Hinduism. And they are so messed up in their heads that if they are against Hinduism, they have to be for jihadi Islam. So these pseudos are always for the left and after the right.

    • @arnabsom3251
      @arnabsom3251 6 лет назад +1

cuz hinduism is the oldest religion. The last remnant of ancient Hinduism is the proof ( i.e.in the Indus valley civilization) which is about 2000 years older than the birth of Jesus Christ. And there too we can only find the proof of worshippers (Shiv linga) So say Ramayana supposedly happened 5000 years before that and according to shiv purana, Shiva existed around 12000 years before that.
But Scientist says that humans didn't exist at that time.
, So no one knows about the origin of Hinduism. And there are 300 million gods and godessess

Archelogical (dwarka city/ram setu), historical/mathematical (time taken to travel from ayodhya to rameshwaram/tip of south india = 21 days by foot matching with today's google maps) records suggest Ramanyan or Mahabharata being a reality 10000 years back and this cycle of creation and destruction is part of the karmic cycle. We are on the ascending curve from destruction to creation in the current time and such hinduism concepts will play a major catalyst in showing the world the right direction, leaving the choice to them (no force).

The reply given by Shri Patnaik to the 1st question of why Lord Hanuman is worshipped so much misses the point. The majority of the people look up to Hanuman to give them the strength and the confidence to live life. We all look for someone on whom we can rest our fears and lovingly think of them to derive confidence. It is not due to ignorance as the speaker says it. Many of the points in his narration/explanation are also not correct. Lord Hanuman isy, but a Vanara. Vanaras are another variation of human beings who existed in the times of Lord Rama. He is right in saying that we should look at this question not intellectually but with an emotional mindset. Great speech. These are my views.

As I visited Bangkok it brought tears of pride to my eyes to see d story of krishna unfold in sculptures at d Airport. To see Lord Ram's Ayodhya (d old City of Ayutthaya) replicated there made me even more proud. Their culture has been so influenced by our Indian King that even their King carries his name as part of their lineage as well d custom of touching an elder or guru's feet. Hindus could want no further legacy than this proof of existence to this day.
