There is one interesting thing about Serbia.( I don't know if that's the case in the rest of the Balkans). Our boomers (my parents) used to call our little boys "ćeri", meaning douther, like they wanted to tell us that we were as much loved as them, even more, and they used to call their little girls "sine", meaning son, as they wanted to say that they were as valuable as the sons.
@@GoranJovanovic-fr1ig lol even today some ppl call their doughters (sine) or sons (ćero). We even have old song caled: ti si ćero, tatin sin (doughter u are fathers son) rough translation. Sorry for bad english
@@GoranJovanovic-fr1igIt's true what you say. I remember from my childhood the feeling I had when an elderly person calls you (sine), son. This works very positively, respectfully and gives you the feeling that he loves you as much as his own son. When you are older and someone says this to you, it means that they are letting you know that you are younger and it acts as a kind of advice, sometimes also a reminder that you are still inexperienced and that it is better to listen to the elders.

Serbian people and culture are exceptional, too bad we can't say the same for our atrocious economy... It's nice to see a foreigner who unlike most of us, isn't blinded by financial struggles, it helps to remind us that there's much to be happy about, money aside.
Serbia's economy, weak as it might seem, is by far the strongest of all post-Yugoslavia states. Just look at the IMF figures (available online) for their respective GDPs and their rates of indebtedness. Serbia has the least foreign debt and the highest GDP.

You can succeed in Serbia as well as you can in the US, it just depends on your skills and talent. Maybe you won't make as much money as you would in the US, but you don't even need that much money for Serbia, because here you can do more with less money, for which you would need a fortune if you wanted to create the same in the US.
some things we don't measure with money, nobody will come to your home and kill your kids or harm you to rob you....freedom is the most important in your life
At this point Serbia has way more opportunity than states any business you wanna start? It’s 10 times less., maybe you’re not gonna make the same money like in the states but you’re not gonna have a stress and overheads like in the states. And most important is time .Time to spend with your kids, family, and friends money cannot buy those things. In US you’ll make more money- maybe-but the more you make the last time you have , more overhead and always thinking you need more and more and more and you forget to enjoy in simple things, and your joy goes to all artificial things.
Wonderful video, glad you like it here, I relate to Alex in many aspects, I'm an ex bartender, I live here all my life and work for the company in the US now. I gotta address one thing here that really rubbed me the wrong way, "Even with the girls it's temporary, but at some point you kinda expect them to go off and do their own thing." Here, if you really care about your family, you're always expected to have a place for them in your home. If you don't, you may try for example building a second floor on the house, helping your kids buy their first property or coming to a solution that's not something along the lines of "you're 18/25/30 yr old, you're on your own now buddy" Most people rent only when it's necessary But you're also obliged to take care of your parents and grandparents or finding someone to hire to take care of them (retirement homes are unpopular here) That's why nobody ends up homeless because of a large medical bill or something similar You may have to set boundaries for your extended family (familija) but you're always a family with your ancestors and descendants (porodica)
Remember Alex is still an American, take it with a grain of salt give him time. I don't think That statement is written in stone. That will never happen that's proven by how he is living his life today.
Yep, was born there, lived there for the first 15 years of my life, lived in Australia for 35 years and now I’m getting ready to move back with my girls!!!😊❤️😊

I admire u for living in Serbia as an American, i would find it nearly impossible. Growing up in Belgrade - I really though the thing about pregnant women skipping the line/queue, or even dad with a baby/toddler entering a bus/tram and someone offering them a seat - was a universal norm everywhere. After moving to Amsterdam - I learned it's not. Also a bit sad to hear stories about kids/people in Serbia starting to adopt that part of western culture (or it's side effect of staring at phone screen, headphones on/in ears). Luckily there's enough older folks to "nudge" them. If not bus/tram driver refusing to move until someone gives up their seat.
I live across the ocean for 20 years now, and i don't agree with you about social life and sports entirely. It's easier to make friends and socialize in Serbia for sure. In big cities like New York, San F. LA, you barely know your neighbor, they rarely say hello.
I live in Belgrade and I don't know absolutely anyone whose relatives or inlaws can come into their home just like that. With mobile phones today even the children and parents call before they pop in. Only the families that have preserved a very traditional way of life do that, though it sounds weird and indecent in big cities. I would never ever go to my son's or my daughter's house without prior calling. Why and how should I? It's entirely out of the question.
You're the king for your in-laws because you are a man, it's different for women. As a women you are never gonna be good for your mother in law in Serbia 😅 And yes, we all grow up on the street in Serbia 😊 God forbidden if someone touches your kids the whole neighborhood would get up and kick the heck out of them. Yes, we are very protective of our children, and we are proud of it ❤😊

@@DejanTrev39 The entire Balkan cultures are about many small national identities BUT that doas not mean USA citizens dont have it. They just dont have many small ones therefore Balkan conflicts. Now identities i speak about are about individualism and gender. This is much more traditional and pretty much plain identity of family life and role. Of course speaking in comparison to USA or western Europe. Now diversity. What i had in mind is literal melting pot of thousands of years cultures that were crossing the Balkan peninsula. You can see this in ethnic diversity as well as simple culture of food, clothing, way of life overall. Serbia is on the crossroads of so called "global north and global south". You can find people who admire western way of life, but also you see people enjoying the slow and mediteranian style of living. There are nationalist movements, political, archeological, music, not to even start about ideologies...there are plenty ... therefore again conflicts in the region ...etc etc... Its one of the most diverse regions on the planet.
Serbia's quite possibly the most diverse country in Europe. This is what having a US salary while living in Serbia, a country ruined by US imperialism, brings. Other ethnicities aren't our enemy. All our enemies look exactly like us.
In the west, people here keep complaining that kids do nothing but spend time on technology, but there is nothing for the kids to do, because everyone is ready to call the police. A mother got arrested because their 12 (?) year old went to a store by himself. Kids don't have public spaces, per say. If they do the parents are watching them. It's exhausting, fake. In the west most neighbors will go years without speaking to each other, or even know how they look like, living on the same street withing meters of each other. I honestly deeply hate living in Canada.

When you are older and someone says this to you, it means that they are letting you know that you are younger and it acts as a kind of advice, sometimes also a reminder that you are still inexperienced and that it is better to listen to the elders.

summa summarum: Life in Serbia is great if you have an US salary...who would have thought...

I gotta address one thing here that really rubbed me the wrong way, "Even with the girls it's temporary, but at some point you kinda expect them to go off and do their own thing."
Here, if you really care about your family, you're always expected to have a place for them in your home.
If you don't, you may try for example building a second floor on the house, helping your kids buy their first property or coming to a solution that's not something along the lines of "you're 18/25/30 yr old, you're on your own now buddy"
Most people rent only when it's necessary
But you're also obliged to take care of your parents and grandparents or finding someone to hire to take care of them (retirement homes are unpopular here)
That's why nobody ends up homeless because of a large medical bill or something similar
You may have to set boundaries for your extended family (familija) but you're always a family with your ancestors and descendants (porodica)

Serbian have friendly people and beautiful coasts.
What remote job do you do sir
That's so awesome... I am in relationships with American man, about 12 years.. And it's always something that stops him to just come to Serbia, in my town, Novi Sad.. That's so sad me... Specially when see other people, like this man, and so many examples..his work, money, etc...
Nadji Srbina, Grka, Italijana…
You've been in a relationship with this man for 12 years and you're still not married? And he always has an excuse for not coming to visit Serbia with you? That really doesn't sound good. 😢 There are better guys out there, Ivana.
A handsome man. 😊
Actualy, its a "Serbian Dream" 😂👍
How do you like the air pollution in the colder half of the year?

What a fatal mistake bombing a land with uranium bombs where now their own citizens decide to live there. So every country should think twice when thinking to do crimes to an another country.

This is what non-divesity brings. The woke and globalists hate this.
Its one of the most diverse parts of the world all right, just not in that sense. Its about culture things and not identity.
@@salonez91 wrong,it's not diverse and it's about identity.
@@paulussturm6572 Nope.
I thought only Russians hooligans join the Serbian army, never thought Americans would do that, knowing the Serbian attitude towards the Americans.
Nešto se baš mnogo amerikanaca doselilo i doseljava ovde...ne sviđa mi se to....a ovaj za 9 godina u Srbiji nije naučio tri reči na srpskom...

I love Serbia❤
In the west, people here keep complaining that kids do nothing but spend time on technology, but there is nothing for the kids to do, because everyone is ready to call the police. A mother got arrested because their 12 (?) year old went to a store by himself. Kids don't have public spaces, per say. If they do the parents are watching them. It's exhausting, fake. In the west most neighbors will go years without speaking to each other, or even know how they look like, living on the same street withing meters of each other. I honestly deeply hate living in Canada.

18:22 Every house here as a chimney cause "you never know when you will need it" and its easy to build.
The US has plenty of overhead lines too that west Europeans mock them for it. Yet Americans won't do tt earthing despite the bigger risks of neutral line failure, while we require it for years now.
A i ti ga izasra . . .ostade "turd"
E kako si rekao dobro Američki san je živeti part time u Srbiji.. upravo je to ono sto želim.. hahaha Bar totalno američki 😊.. ja ih ne volim..
You say that in America the teachers can not hug the kids, fair enough, but they can take 9 year old kid or a little bit older and without kid's parents knowing, fill them up with hormons which are opposite of kid's sex, testosterones or progesterons. Interesting and very cruel. God help those kids. Otherwise I wish you good health and your family and for knowledge sake start learning Serbian language. Every day new 3 words and soon you will know how to talk in Serbian.
And in Serbia you allow kids to wield explosives during holidays that can irreversibly destroy their limbs, drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, go gambling, and disrespect educated people because they didnt gift you a high grade, but suuure, transness is the biggest and most pressing issue to be brought up. 🙄 Will somebody please selectively think about the children!😭🙏
@@azzyb7738 go to Internet and find the parents who take the criminal actions against the schools who make psychological damage to their kids, I am not lying
If you earn a foreign salary, living in Serbia might be manageable-you can afford to create a bubble with private education and healthcare. But for those of us Serbs who live and work here, it's a different story-it's a living hell.
Talking about that other side of New York, i have to recommend the last episode on Peter Santanello's channel.
People outside of the NY probably don't have an idea what else NY have to offer. It's interesting.
