      Hey I've got an idea, you could bring your super powerful fume extractor over to my place and test it out in the bathroom after my dad's been in there. We could make a video about it called "Are other peoples farts bad for your lungs?".

    If you uses a fume extractor and take all safety precautions, you are relatively safe, some studies have shown that lead free solder are actually more harmful than leaded solders due to the higher temperature settings, but good eye opener though, but again, if u take all safety precautions, soldering is relatively safe

    build an air exhaust ez with a 15 dollar bathroom vent fan from home depot and a couple of vent ducts... some more tinkering required. No need a way to air seal the system so its 100% efficient then a way to seal it off from letting air in or out of your house. (including bugs out)

    I found out a easy way to avoid the smoke. What you do is put a heat source near where you solder like a light and the smoke will go to it and collect and condense not going into the room.

    Use "leaded" 60/40 tin/lead rosin core solder for occasional hobby soldering, have a fan going if you are fearful of fumes. Learn to make good electrical solder joints quickly with good technique learned in practice. Don't put solder in your mouth and wash hands after handling solder.

  • @charlessmith263

    So I got it. If all of that solder fumes go directly into your mouth or nose without PPE, and, say, get exposed to about 250,000 to 500,000 ppm of the fumes in 5 minutes, you will not only end up in the hospital with lung problems - you will likely die in the same way you got exposed to crystalline silica dust and end up with fatal acute silicosis.

    I don't want to sound it offensively but it's a pretty primitive, but good idea. Maybe you should make a comparison with carbon filter or maybe try to condense fumes that you get from it, or perhaps even try some other filter (cigarette filter maybe and yea I know there are a ton of them but for the heck of it, also I know that they're not very efficient but it would be interesting to see )sure it condenses on cotton but its not very efficient

    I have been opening windows on both sides when ironing. With a small fan sucking the smoke instead of pushing them away. Because I am using usb 5 watts soldering irons and low melting point tin. When the fan blow the heat is not enough to melt the tin well.
    But ever since my grandson arrived, i hv difficulty to feel safe soldering. The smoke may stick to the furniture and walls as I usually solder in living room.
    I will feel better to solder in the toilet with windows wide opened. Even best in the open air. But then very difficult to set it right for soldering 0603 and 0402 smd...

      N95 is just like a regular mask. If you have experience passing people who are smoking cigarettes while you wear a mask, you know that regular masks don't help a lot.
      These fumes need P100 rating to start filtering it, and it's still not perfect, you need activated charcoal. If you are doing this type of work for long time, I would recommend 3M 6502QL/7502 + 6006 or 7093C.

    • @shinevisionsv
      @shinevisionsv 6 лет назад +2

      Most smoke that comes of it is because of the Flux, AKA Rosin. so yes. doesn't matter what solder with flux core you use.

    • @ugagnskraake
      @ugagnskraake 6 лет назад

      Neither tin, copper nor lead will evaporate at soldering temperatures. The one with the lowest boiling point (when fluid turns to gas) is lead, which boils at 1749°C.

    • @shartnitazodkeesian4018
      @shartnitazodkeesian4018 6 лет назад

      Its probably a safe bet to just assume the crazy fumes coming from the random solder people use are probably not mostly the normal air we need to breathe, so filtration is probably usually advisable. Especially when soldering for long periods of time.

  • @phonotical
    @phonotical 6 лет назад +1

    People have been doing it for years and they're fine, with the lead too, I'm sure it isn't so bad

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 лет назад +3

      But they are not fine. Asthma is a highly widespread occupational disease among electronics repairmen and assembly line workers who solder, with around a quarter to half the workers, depending on survey, experiencing asthma symptoms eventually.
      Granted, it takes a lot of time to manifest, and predominantly people who solder as their day job are at risk, rather than soldering something once every month or so.
      The sole source of damage has been flux, no symptoms of lead poisoning were ever reported, no significant traces of lead were found. However it is to be considered, that soldering lead-free usually incurs higher activated flux (i.e. halogen doped), or higher soldering temperature which causes higher burn and evaporation, so it's likely that lead-free soldering may be more harmful.

      Phonotical - you are not right. It is dangerous. I am an entronic technician since 1970, i don't sit near to solder smoke now. When I breath solder smoke i feel head ache, vomiting etc. One of my friend (e-tech) had hempilical herania, now he do not sit near to solder smoke. One another friend had eye baloons (inflamation below of eys). Also another e-tech had limphoma, passed away.
      It is very dangerous than smoking.
      The reason is that you are very close to, while soldering. Due to this major portion of solder smoke is breathed. Always keep a small fan to push away the smoke and do not sit in the direction of smoke.
      The solder is lead (Pb) + tin it is poisonous. Drink one cup fresh lemon drink every day evening if you work on solder.
      Good luck
