He was truly a child of the Muses. Don't you love his silly songs? So endearing, he most have loved children. I always thnk Handle must have taken his music to mind after coming to England.
Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) prefaced his sonnet "Henry Purcell" with these words: "The poet wishes well to the divine genius of Purcell and praises him that, whereas other musicians have given utterance to the moods of man's mind, he has, beyond that, uttered in notes the very make and species of man as created both in him and in all men generally".
Purcell a prophet who weeps like Jeremiah in the time of desolation in specially when the composer lived to restore and bringing forth the cardinal themes of human experience within the valley
Muchisimas gracias! Quisiera decir algo mas sustancioso, pero escribo esto mientras escucho y la deliciosa sensación que me brinda esta música me deja sin palabras.

Totally different style from a totally different age; the early English Baroque of Purcell comes from a different musical planet to that of the Mozart/Haydn Viennese Classical style of a hundred years later. Haydn in particular *did* write a number of symphonies and string quartets starting with adagio movements; they in the sonata da chiesa form - basically slow/fast/slow/fast. Check out: Symphonies 5 11 12 21 22 30 34 49* String quartets Opus 1 No 3 Opus 2 No 6 Opus 9 No 5 Opus 17 No 3 Opus 42 (a single quartet) Opus 55 No 2 Opus 71 No 2 (slow introduction only). Additionally, 9 of the earlier quartets up to and including Opus 20 begin with very gently paced Moderato movements. * Symphony 49 in f minor (‘La passione’) is unquestionably the greatest symphony of the 18th century beginning with an entire slow movement, and one of the greatest of all sturm und drang symphonies.
after the end of puritan terrorism that removed every entertainment in England, Purcell's act of writing such music that pleases the ears was beyond radical. it was like doing rock in North Korea
Yes, indeed, comment 27. It is hard work to compete with what comes later with Handel and Bach. But what delicacy of expression here, where the, musical spirit sings almostcae
A appreciation of Purcell has absolutely nothing to do with Bach and Handel in the same way that appreciating Beethoven has nothing to do with Wagner or Mahler; et cetera.

Inmortal.
Regalo de Dios.
Elegant and rad. It's sobering to think that I am twice as old as Purcell was when he died.
Purcell a prophet who weeps like Jeremiah in the time of desolation in specially when the composer lived to restore and bringing forth the cardinal themes of human experience within the valley

I AGREE WITH YOU!!!!
Soothing classical music.
Muchisimas gracias! Quisiera decir algo mas sustancioso, pero escribo esto mientras escucho y la deliciosa sensación que me brinda esta música me deja sin palabras.
Thank you. I especially enjoy his trumpet compositions.
He was called "Persil" in one of Leslie Thomas's 1970's raunchy comedy novels! And, anyway the heroine thought the 'Voluntary' was Purcell's and not Jeremiah Clarke's! Just a bit of trivia!!!
So beautiful! What a tragedy he died so young😔
Pieter-Jan Belder es garantía de excelencia. ¡Gracias mil!
Baroque music came before the rock and will last late after the rock ! Purcell probably said : I WILL ROCK YOU ????
Sweet melancholy.

Gracias Brillant Classics. Ustedes siempre tan diligentes....
You are listening to the same music as an audience did 400 years ago. it is just as wonderful now as it was then. but they would have been better dressed then no doubt.
Discovered Purcell during the Lockdown period last year when listening to VOCES8.

Henry Purcell was years ahead in style with his 1980's perm.
Interesting. Why all these sonatas starting with adagio movements unlike the Haydn/Mozart style ?
Totally different style from a totally different age; the early English Baroque of Purcell comes from a different musical planet to that of the Mozart/Haydn Viennese Classical style of a hundred years later.
Haydn in particular *did* write a number of symphonies and string quartets starting with adagio movements; they in the sonata da chiesa form - basically slow/fast/slow/fast.
Check out:

Opus 2 No 6
Opus 9 No 5
Opus 17 No 3
Opus 42 (a single quartet)
Opus 55 No 2
Opus 71 No 2 (slow introduction only).

After reading your great comment I can't help but imagining Stewi Griffin in one of his 'sexy parties' rockin to Purcell's tunes :-)
Why does each movement start about a half bar late with a click noise? Love this music, but that's a bit annoying.
........... Very Nice, Thanks for Sharing.
Любимый мой!
