My Talent never had much talent in my opinion. Thank goodness the top thread kept on breaking and I needed to do something. It is totally unclear from the machine itself (or the manual) where you should oil it. But here I found the best advice - with pictures and all - to do the job. It took an entire morning, but now the machine 'cuts' like a hot knife through butter. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Hello from the other side of the Pond, in the UK! Thank you so much! I have got a three year old Singer Brilliance 6180 which has got so many negative reviews that it made me think it was not worth spending much on her maintenance. But she has been working dutifully for the past three years and I really like her. I would love if you could do a video on how to maintain her. I think this video though comes pretty close and it has given me the courage to decide that I will open her up and clean her! Mind you, she is one of my 11 machines, (and some good solid all metal mechanical ones that I restore and maintain myself). This Singer one was just too intimidating and I was afraid of doing more harm than good, as she is very light and plasticky. But I do like her as she gave me tons of hours of fun and still does! So I'll take the plunge thanks to you! :D
I am working on a Singer Tradition 2277 for my neighbor who sews masks for everyone in the community. This video really helped me. The reverse button was stuck. I knew all it needed was some lubrication, but after watching your video, I dissasembled the whole thing! I am very surprised at what these things look like when you remove the cover. I've only worked on my Singer 301, never the new machines. This one had lots of lint as well and a glob of grease just like yours. My only complaint is that I would have loved to see the places you oiled rather than your head or your hand. lol! Thanks again.

Very good helpful video, thank you. Often your head or hand was in the way, though, when you were oiling the parts so it was difficult to see exactly where you placed the oil.
I was so surprised to see so much lint. I am 83 years old and have sewn all my life. When I was maybe 13 0r 14 I was sewing on my portable singer, and it stopped. Before that I used my grandmother's treadle. I called my neighbor who worked an an awning shop. She came over and taught me how to clean and oil my machine. This was really an excellent video on how to care for your machine. Thank you so much

Great presentation, very helpful. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work though. I adjusted the play in the cam shaft to no avail. The machine sews perfect stitches when I manually turn the wheel but as soon as I touch the pedal the wheel disengages with a loud clank!

I have the singer talent 3323, I think the timing is out, it jams every time I sew. I rethread everytime it jams, I clean it out, and it keeps jamming every time I fix it. I need to pull it completely apart following your video. The throat area is pretty clean. I now have a new machine but the 3323 is in the garage waiting to be repaired. The bobbin case is fine, no needle damage, the plate looks fine too, no needle marks.
Great video, awesome explanation. Is there a chance that you can make a service video for a very very old Lady, namely the "Singer Professional XL-100"? In fact, mine is so old that I had no luck to find a company for servicing it.
Hello Ignis, The XL series machines were actually made by Juki for Singer. They are difficult at best to service and can have many different problems. Some parts are still available for these machines but I believe Juki no longer makes any of them so they are limited, expensive and hard to get. The bobbin case for example a part that is normally $20 to $30 and readily available for most machines is about $125.00 and has to be special ordered for this machine. I would suggest finding another machine, I am sorry I don't have better news.
Very nice video. It seems you know these Singers backwards and forwards. Curious if you know if the Singer 44 series like 4411 and 4452 have circuit boards other than in the foot pedal. I have 2 that won't power on.
With the exception of the electronic version, (6000 series) the only circuit boards on the HD series machines is for the light. If the 4000 series is not coming on then either you’re not getting power to the machine or the switch is out. If by chance it’s just the light not coming on, so long as the machine has power it will still sew if the light has gone out
Learned a few good things - like don't use a metal bobbin if your bobbin case is plastic. Very important to prevent wear & tear! I have a Singer 860 (new in 1981) that is electronic, so one must be careful not to disturb the board on the inside of the top of the machine. I am quite faithful in cleaning my machine and last fall I finally had to replace feed gears. I decided to also have the hook gears changed out also as they were as old and showing lesser signs of deterioration (they looked to be of a hard rubber). The new replacement gears look to be white plastic (nylon?) and I am wondering what grease is needed - would a Triflow product be suitable? (The person who did the repairs is no longer available so am hoping you may be able to help out. I do know not to use the machine oil I use to lubricate the bobbin and upper metal metal pieces that are done quite frequently. Thank you - your video is well presented and full of great information.
I thought it was an excellent point to only use plastic bobbins in plastic bobbin cases. I never knew that, but I think you can only buy plastic bobbins for the most part anyway. My neighbor taught me to keep my sewing machine clean in order for it to function properly.

I purchased my Singer 2263, about 15 years ago. i have never used it. But now I want to sew. My question is, if the oil after so many years has been damadged? And if i must do a new lubrication then, do I have to Open the whole machine? Although your instruction is very good, I suppose if I Open the machine as you have done in this video, I might never put it to work again with all those screws and stuff. So my question is, perhaps it is written in the instructions, if I can put oil in different parts in the machine withhout ”Open it up” like you have done? Great video. Thanks.
Also to transform from a metal bobbin in to the one in plastic, was very informative. I have one question more. Of all those screws, are they all of the same size? Can I put all the crews together in a little bowl?
My bobbin string keeps wadding up and stops the whole needle from moving. I thought it was something to do with the bobbin but might be the aluminum plate on top. I'll try that and see if it helps.... Thanks
I assume by stuck you mean locked up. You need to identify where the problem is. Try turning the hand wheel back and forth, watch the needle bar and hook do you get the slightest amount of movement out of either one?
Actually its Johns wife... my machine was running really well and then I selected a different stitch, when I finished with that went back to straight stitching, but now it just goes forward a stitch, then back half a stitch , forward a stitch back a half a stitch....all the way along. Is this a hard fix? Not an expensive machine. Singer Simple, many years old but lightly used. Is this something I can fix or does the machine have to be taken in to be repaired?

Hello Haizie, It can possibly be saved, it needs to be opened, cleaned and lubricated. Any place with rust needs the be oiled to stop the rust, I highly recommend using TriFlow, it designed to stop rust. The motor will probably need to be taken apart, cleaned and lubricated as well.
Great vid! Maybe you can guide me a little, i' Singer talent for some time, it works well but few days ago i found big problem ;( while working at full speed jumps to reverse gear (or to normal when working in reverse). Can you tell me on what part should i look? Thanks
Sounds like it needs a good cleaning. Look at the reverse lever and follow the assembly you will see where it leads inside the machine. that will be where your problem is.
What kind of grease is used? I heard some can't be used on plastic only metal. I have a singer traditional top bobbin load & a blue brother machine and just want to make sure I don't put the wrong grease in them. THANKS!
Hi, I’m new to this and I have your same sewing machine. I removed all parts and cleaned up the old sticky grease it had. I know I have to lubricate it but the needle doesn’t move at all, even with the old grease it come with it doesn’t move. What do you think may be causing this? Thanks
I took apart my singer simple to clean and oil and I heard a small part fall inside, found the little metal barrel and never found where it came from but I seen it laying on your towel beside your machine in this video and I watched it fall off your towel 😮so where did it go? I had shot the bulb also, maybe next time I will remove the bulb before maintenance and seems to work properly so far minus the little metal barrel 😅 but seriously, what is this piece?
Sound like the bobbin winder may be engaged, the foot pedal is not working or the belt has come off of the machine. Assuming there is power to the electrical outlet your machine is plugged into and a breaker has not tripped, when you press the foot control do hear any sound, is so then make sure your bobbin winder is not engaed, if that is not the problem then you need to check the belt and make sure it has not come off. If there is no sound when the foot control is depressed then ther foot control may need to be replaced.
Very helpful video! Are you going to do any videos on the Singer 5808c? I was gifted the old girl and it's very lint laden. Tried to sew a scrap to see how it was set and no thread was left behind in the material only needle holes. Both upper and lower threads pulled freely. Total head scratcher. Never experienced that one ever.
Thank you for this amazing video. I have a singer tradition 2263 and I started to have problems after I oiled my machine recently. It’s the issue with upper thread tension. Thread tension feels tight even when the tension dial is set to zero. I tried all possible ways and this is the last resort. I am so ready to open up my machine after watching this video but I would resist until I hear from you 😅. Do you have any solutions? Thanks ☺️
Have a Singer cg500 and wonder if you might have any tips for adjusting the timing. It has the timing belt and you can loosen the set screws, but you can't really see the hook point precisely behind the needle. Any tips appreciated.
You may need to remove the feed dogs to get a better view, if it’s out of time you need to know what caused it to out of time such as belt slipping or needle bar being pushed up.
My singer tradition is making a grinding noise. I don’t know how to stop it. I took my machine apart, cleaned it and oiled it. My belt looks fine too. Do you have any recommendations?
Hello ! Hi have this exact machine and while i was using it it completely stopped, jammed solid. The wheel wont budge but there's no thread stuck or anything, i cleaned it. everything on the left side ( needle, bobbin etc..)looks completely fine 🤔 I dont understand its so stuck as if it was screwed in place, if that makes sense. Any idea what it could be? ( belts are not broken) Im asking because i cant take to a repair place, i live in the country side and there's nothing here and i dont have a car and i cant afford anything so i have to manage, if you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated 😊
I see this a good bit in machines, it sounds like the machine froze up due to lack of lubrication in the bushings and or lint getting into the bushings and locking it up. The machine needs to be cleaned and inspected for damage.
I'm trying to figure out if that turning plastic wheel could be removed? To insert a metal one to get it peddling since no electricity is available here?
Check the stitch length dial and make sure it is above 0. I would recommend putting it on its highest setting and see if it will start feeding. If not then it needs to be diagnosed to find out what is broke.
The motor is probably smoking, it’s most likely due to oil and grease drying up in the machine and not being properly serviced. The motor pulls to much power trying to turn a machine that is locking up and starts burning the motor up. The only other possibility is the motor is dowsed with oil and it is burning off, which is a fire hazard.
I need help from someone who knows much more than I do. My mother bought a Singer from a yard sale. It worked fine when we first got it. I was doing a dress for my sister 2 yrs ago and right near the end, the motor slowed down and stopped. But even with encouraging it with the hand wheel it will not sew. I opened the machine and cleaned it and oiled and greased it. No change. I opened the foot petal to see if I could find a problem there. I cleaned it up and I see nothing broken. No change . Any suggestions?

you can either take the foot pedal apart un hook the wires and add a piece of wire then reconnect the wires. Or Disconnect the wires from both end remove it and replace with a longer piece. Lamp cord from the hardware store will work fine..

Mine is new so I wouldn’t need to clean it but honestly, I’m kinda dissapointed of this purchase. It makes noise as it sews and it doesn’t run smoothly. I figured it probably needs oiling but being new, it shouldn’t have this issue. I read the manual, it doesn’t mention anything about oiling at all. If it does need oiling, how often and what parts to oil… The stitches are good but I feel like it’s not ok to continue sewing as it works now. What should I do, take it to be serviced or try do it myself as in this video?

Here is a link to a spool pin for the talent. Pull the back cover off as per the video, there is a small screw that holds the spool pin in place up top. Remove the screw and the old spool pin should pull out, then replace the pin and screw and reassemble. Thank you.
Please help! I referenced your video to fix my machine because the hand wheel would not turn. I fixed it with this video but I must have messed something else up because now when I press the presser foot nothing moves. It won’t even pull the bobbin thread up

In the video at 16:32 I have the machine standing up on end. You can see the black gear that drives the hook Just above that is a white plastic cam. That controls the up and down motion of the feed dogs. That cam will move left and right, closer to or further away from the gear, It needs to be in the exact position as it in the video. If it still is not working then the height of the feed dogs need to be adjusted. If this machine is not properly cleaned often the lint will destroy this cam. if that has happened you are better off buying a new machine, as replacing the cam may be as much or more than a new machine.
I have my singer quantum 9960 apart and am trying to see why the backside of my feed dogs are not all the way up when the dogs are in the up position. There is a nut/small threaded plastic piece and a pin attached to the plastic piece that I believe the pin came out of it home. How can I fix this?
Hi, thank You for the video. My Singer Talent 3321 keeps scraping the needle plate with the needle (it looks displaced towards the operator) and going just a little fast or through a little thicker fabrics (especially when backstitching) makes the needle hit the plate hard. Additionally, its skipping stitches ocassionally (also mostly when going fast or thick). This started after I sewed a really thick stack of fabric way too fast. I am trying to avoid sending the machine in, because the repair shop will take a while and maybe the problem is more easily fixable. Do You have an idea? Thank You very much.

SINGER ADVANCE 7422 Stitch length will not change to a basting stitch, stay on a very tight stitch, some times it will start to sew a longer stitch but will automatically switch back to a very tight stitch.

I think you meant needle plate. You can use a Dremel with a cone shape diamond plate to remove the burrs.

Thank you for a great video on cleaning and oiling. I had a bit of difficulty seeing how much oil was being dispensed when you oiled areas.
Normally you just need a couple drops.

I have the singer talent 3323, I think the timing is out, it jams every time I sew. I rethread everytime it jams, I clean it out, and it keeps jamming every time I fix it. I need to pull it completely apart following your video. The throat area is pretty clean.
I now have a new machine but the 3323 is in the garage waiting to be repaired. The bobbin case is fine, no needle damage, the plate looks fine too, no needle marks.

The XL series machines were actually made by Juki for Singer.
They are difficult at best to service and can have many different problems.
Some parts are still available for these machines but I believe Juki no longer makes any of them so they are limited, expensive and hard to get.
The bobbin case for example a part that is normally $20 to $30 and readily available for most machines is about $125.00 and has to be special ordered for this machine.
I would suggest finding another machine, I am sorry I don't have better news.

Curious if you know if the Singer 44 series like 4411 and 4452 have circuit boards other than in the foot pedal. I have 2 that won't power on.
With the exception of the electronic version, (6000 series) the only circuit boards on the HD series machines is for the light.
If the 4000 series is not coming on then either you’re not getting power to the machine or the switch is out.
If by chance it’s just the light not coming on, so long as the machine has power it will still sew if the light has gone out

Learned a few good things - like don't use a metal bobbin if your bobbin case is plastic. Very important to prevent wear & tear! I have a Singer 860 (new in 1981) that is electronic, so one must be careful not to disturb the board on the inside of the top of the machine. I am quite faithful in cleaning my machine and last fall I finally had to replace feed gears. I decided to also have the hook gears changed out also as they were as old and showing lesser signs of deterioration (they looked to be of a hard rubber). The new replacement gears look to be white plastic (nylon?) and I am wondering what grease is needed - would a Triflow product be suitable? (The person who did the repairs is no longer available so am hoping you may be able to help out. I do know not to use the machine oil I use to lubricate the bobbin and upper metal metal pieces that are done quite frequently. Thank you - your video is well presented and full of great information.

I thought it was an excellent point to only use plastic bobbins in plastic bobbin cases. I never knew that, but I think you can only buy plastic bobbins for the most part anyway. My neighbor taught me to keep my sewing machine clean in order for it to function properly.

I purchased my Singer 2263, about 15 years ago. i have never used it. But now I want to sew. My question is, if the oil after so many years has been damadged? And if i must do a new lubrication then, do I have to Open the whole machine? Although your instruction is very good, I suppose if I Open the machine as you have done in this video, I might never put it to work again with all those screws and stuff. So my question is, perhaps it is written in the instructions, if I can put oil in different parts in the machine withhout ”Open it up” like you have done? Great video. Thanks.

Never use engine oil on a machine! It will destroy it.
In order to get oil in the bushings and such, the machine has to be opened.
Yes the old oil will dry up.

My bobbin string keeps wadding up and stops the whole needle from moving. I thought it was something to do with the bobbin but might be the aluminum plate on top. I'll try that and see if it helps.... Thanks

I assume by stuck you mean locked up.
You need to identify where the problem is.
Try turning the hand wheel back and forth, watch the needle bar and hook do you get the slightest amount of movement out of either one?
Actually its Johns wife... my machine was running really well and then I selected a different stitch, when I finished with that went back to straight stitching, but now it just goes forward a stitch, then back half a stitch , forward a stitch back a half a stitch....all the way along. Is this a hard fix? Not an expensive machine. Singer Simple, many years old but lightly used. Is this something I can fix or does the machine have to be taken in to be repaired?
Sounds like your stitch length knob is on S1. Turn it back to 3 or 4 length

It can possibly be saved, it needs to be opened, cleaned and lubricated.
Any place with rust needs the be oiled to stop the rust, I highly recommend using TriFlow, it designed to stop rust.
The motor will probably need to be taken apart, cleaned and lubricated as well.

Sounds like it needs a good cleaning. Look at the reverse lever and follow the assembly you will see where it leads inside the machine. that will be where your problem is.
What kind of grease is used? I heard some can't be used on plastic only metal. I have a singer traditional top bobbin load & a blue brother machine and just want to make sure I don't put the wrong grease in them. THANKS!

Hi, I’m new to this and I have your same sewing machine. I removed all parts and cleaned up the old sticky grease it had. I know I have to lubricate it but the needle doesn’t move at all, even with the old grease it come with it doesn’t move. What do you think may be causing this?

Probably either the needle bar or one of the bushing has varnish (dried oil) that needs to cleaned out.

I took apart my singer simple to clean and oil and I heard a small part fall inside, found the little metal barrel and never found where it came from but I seen it laying on your towel beside your machine in this video and I watched it fall off your towel 😮so where did it go? I had shot the bulb also, maybe next time I will remove the bulb before maintenance and seems to work properly so far minus the little metal barrel 😅 but seriously, what is this piece?
My problem is my needle arm is not working when the machine is on/ when the power foot is pressed. No up and down motion unless turned manually.
Sound like the bobbin winder may be engaged, the foot pedal is not working or the belt has come off of the machine.
Assuming there is power to the electrical outlet your machine is plugged into and a breaker has not tripped, when you press the foot control do hear any sound, is so then make sure your bobbin winder is not engaed, if that is not the problem then you need to check the belt and make sure it has not come off.
If there is no sound when the foot control is depressed then ther foot control may need to be replaced.
Very helpful video! Are you going to do any videos on the Singer 5808c? I was gifted the old girl and it's very lint laden. Tried to sew a scrap to see how it was set and no thread was left behind in the material only needle holes. Both upper and lower threads pulled freely. Total head scratcher. Never experienced that one ever.
Thank you for this amazing video. I have a singer tradition 2263 and I started to have problems after I oiled my machine recently. It’s the issue with upper thread tension. Thread tension feels tight even when the tension dial is set to zero. I tried all possible ways and this is the last resort. I am so ready to open up my machine after watching this video but I would resist until I hear from you 😅. Do you have any solutions?

Have a Singer cg500 and wonder if you might have any tips for adjusting the timing.
It has the timing belt and you can loosen the set screws, but you can't really see the hook point precisely behind the needle.

You may need to remove the feed dogs to get a better view, if it’s out of time you need to know what caused it to out of time such as belt slipping or needle bar being pushed up.

Hello ! Hi have this exact machine and while i was using it it completely stopped, jammed solid. The wheel wont budge but there's no thread stuck or anything, i cleaned it. everything on the left side ( needle, bobbin etc..)looks completely fine 🤔 I dont understand its so stuck as if it was screwed in place, if that makes sense. Any idea what it could be? ( belts are not broken) Im asking because i cant take to a repair place, i live in the country side and there's nothing here and i dont have a car and i cant afford anything so i have to manage, if you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated 😊
I see this a good bit in machines, it sounds like the machine froze up due to lack of lubrication in the bushings and or lint getting into the bushings and locking it up.
The machine needs to be cleaned and inspected for damage.
I'm trying to figure out if that turning plastic wheel could be removed? To insert a metal one to get it peddling since no electricity is available here?

Check the stitch length dial and make sure it is above 0.
I would recommend putting it on its highest setting and see if it will start feeding.
If not then it needs to be diagnosed to find out what is broke.

The motor is probably smoking, it’s most likely due to oil and grease drying up in the machine and not being properly serviced. The motor pulls to much power trying to turn a machine that is locking up and starts burning the motor up.
The only other possibility is the motor is dowsed with oil and it is burning off, which is a fire hazard.
I need help from someone who knows much more than I do.
My mother bought a Singer from a yard sale. It worked fine when we first got it.
I was doing a dress for my sister 2 yrs ago and right near the end, the motor slowed down and stopped. But even with encouraging it with the hand wheel it will not sew.
I opened the machine and cleaned it and oiled and greased it. No change.
I opened the foot petal to see if I could find a problem there. I cleaned it up and I see nothing broken. No change .

what is the oil/lubricant type you are using. Sounds like a much better choice over sewing machine oil.
Question what is with these short foot pedal power cords they supply. How can I extend this...other than having to drill a hole in my wifes work table.

you can either take the foot pedal apart un hook the wires and add a piece of wire then reconnect the wires.
Or
Disconnect the wires from both end remove it and replace with a longer piece.
Lamp cord from the hardware store will work fine..

Mine is new so I wouldn’t need to clean it but honestly, I’m kinda dissapointed of this purchase. It makes noise as it sews and it doesn’t run smoothly. I figured it probably needs oiling but being new, it shouldn’t have this issue. I read the manual, it doesn’t mention anything about oiling at all. If it does need oiling, how often and what parts to oil…

If you have not got them yet take the bottom off the machine under the hook you should be able to find them.

all machines made today have plastic hand wheels. It is a decent machine for the price, but it is not a heavy duty machine.

My child broke the spool pin? on the top that holds the thread. Do you know where I can obtain another one and can you do a video on replacing it? TY.
Here is a link to a spool pin for the talent.
Pull the back cover off as per the video, there is a small screw that holds the spool pin in place up top.
Remove the screw and the old spool pin should pull out, then replace the pin and screw and reassemble.

Thank you for this great video. It explains a lot. I'm trying to service my machine (Singer 3722). The cover is stuck on one screw, I found it, but it seems impossible to get it out (or for that matter...in again, afterwards) Made a picture of it, but can't seem to post it..
The only screw I can think of on a singer that is tough to get to is on the front cover. I go over that one at 13:15 in the video.

Hello sir very useful video ,I have the same machine ,the feed dog in this is lowered and not feeding the cloth can you help me with this
In the video at 16:32 I have the machine standing up on end. You can see the black gear that drives the hook Just above that is a white plastic cam.
That controls the up and down motion of the feed dogs. That cam will move left and right, closer to or further away from the gear, It needs to be in the exact position as it in the video.
If it still is not working then the height of the feed dogs need to be adjusted. If this machine is not properly cleaned often the lint will destroy this cam. if that has happened you are better off buying a new machine, as replacing the cam may be as much or more than a new machine.

I have my singer quantum 9960 apart and am trying to see why the backside of my feed dogs are not all the way up when the dogs are in the up position. There is a nut/small threaded plastic piece and a pin attached to the plastic piece that I believe the pin came out of it home. How can I fix this?

Hi, thank You for the video. My Singer Talent 3321 keeps scraping the needle plate with the needle (it looks displaced towards the operator) and going just a little fast or through a little thicker fabrics (especially when backstitching) makes the needle hit the plate hard. Additionally, its skipping stitches ocassionally (also mostly when going fast or thick). This started after I sewed a really thick stack of fabric way too fast. I am trying to avoid sending the machine in, because the repair shop will take a while and maybe the problem is more easily fixable. Do You have an idea? Thank You very much.

SINGER ADVANCE 7422 Stitch length will not change to a basting stitch, stay on a very tight stitch, some times it will start to sew a longer stitch but will automatically switch back to a very tight stitch.
