This has been a week. Some of our greatest Black American icons made transition. Prayers to Mrs. McElroy Ansa’s family and to our community as a whole. Her transition is a great loss to the world. 🙏🏾
My Farthers family came into that port from Sierra Leone and enslaved in North Carolina. My Grandparents made their way to Brooklyn in 1919. Grandfather was the Deacon and my Grandmother was the first lady of the largest AME church in New York. Lived on president st. Owned a big brown stone and raised six kids. Five of them became school teachers, and engine-nears. My farther went to Brooklyn tech and was drafted at 18. WWl. He worked at the Brooklyn post office. He was the foreman and head mechanic in charge of all of the mail trucks. Rain or shine. I'm blessed to have grown up in a good black neighborhood in Jamaica Queens with strong people and great parents. I am grateful that my ancestors made it through that long boat ride through hell. I come from the strongest that survived ❤ peace Thaddine Swift Eagle.
Child I tell trifling folks that try to get in my way to go on across the hollow to" "YAMACRAW". When I'm out in my flower garden and I'm observing all of the butterflies & hummingbirds &bees and the other life forms. I think of the conversations that "Lena&, Herman have as they tour Lena's home space and marvel at the beauty of our "CREATOR"
Professor Hunter thank you for this beautiful interview. As a child I lived fifty miles from Brunswick Georgia in a small hamlet in Ware County. The second time that I visited the Sea Islands was on a school outing in 6 grade. As I walked about Saint Simon Island and observed the surrounding environment the moss hanging from the huge oak trees intrigued me. also the ruins of our ancestors Lodges. I felt a sadness with in my being that I could not articulate at that time in my life. However since I started listening to you and Dr.Carr on Saturdays the dots are connecting and I no longer feel ashamed of what our ancestors endured. Both of you brilliant scholars have allowed me to honor their existence. Because I now know that without them I would not be. Asa Asa!!
I felt this departure deeply. Baby of the Family and The Hand I Fan With are among my favorite books ever. Rest well ancestor. Happy reunion with your dear hubby and the rest of your family. 😇🙌🏿❤
