With immigrant parents determined to make a better life for their son, Dr. Alvaro Huerta speaks upon his journey from the ghettos of Tijuana and East Los Angeles to earning his doctorate degree.
Dr. Alvaro Huerta is an Assistant Professor in Urban & Region Planning and Ethnic & Women’s Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He holds a Ph.D. (city & regional planning) from UC Berkeley. He also holds an M.A. (urban planning) and a B.A. (history) from UCLA. As an interdisciplinary scholar, his research focuses on the intersecting domains of urban planning, Chicana/o-Latina/o studies, immigration, social movements, social networks and the informal economy. As a prolific scholar, he has published books, journal articles, edited volumes and social commentaries. This includes a book, Reframing the Latino Immigration Debate (2013) from San Diego State University Press, and an edited volume, People of Color in the United States: Contemporary Issues in Education, Work, Communities, Health, and Immigration (2016) from ABC-CLIO/Greenwood. I also want to mention (since he left it out) that Dr. Huerta was a key lead organizer for the Association of Latin American Gardeners of Los Angeles's (ALAGLA) fight against the leaf blower ban in the late 1990s. An example of what a true scholar-activist. "Dignity and respect for los de abajo." Right on!
