    Also, Ariel I’d recommend you read A Moveable Feast by Hemingway - he gives a fascinating glimpse into Gertrude Stein’s personality…

    Tbh I was so scared of your peachy hair and now I am totally convinced :D It looks so good! Also, I finally finished my biggest mashed potato book today! I had read half way through it TWO years ago and have had it on my night stand every day since (I even moved inbetween😅, placing it back on there):0 I am so glad I've finished it now, since I enjoyed it so much.

      What book was it?

    • @HaSchi310
      @HaSchi310 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@gomordecai3129 The English title is "The Greatest Polar Expedition of All Time", the German one "Eingefroren am Nordpol" translates to "Frozen at the North Pole". It's about the MOSAiC expedition, where researchers from 37 different nations let their ship freeze into the ice in autumn of 2019 and through the ice's movement were transported all the way over the North Pole during one year. The book is structured as the logbook of the expedition's leader, with pictures and information boxes scattered throughout.
      It was so breathtaking reading about the different challenges they had and how the international team was able to help and support each other, especially during the pandemic. Did you know that it takes longer to reach a human populated area from the North Pole than from the ISS for example? Just fascinating ^^

    As far as influencing/ bookish scrolling, I’d much rather find myself in the book community than pretty much any other category I could spend money on. I have mostly read poetry and am wanting to venture out and into some fiction, with plot and dialogue. Recommendations coming from well read folks on the internet, seeing from their thoughts and perspective, helps me out a lot personally, as I’m still learning what I would reach for or like in a reading experience. Happy tp be here. Thanks for sharing. ✨

    Alphabetical Diaries was originally released as a series of newsletters for the New York Times! That sort of format made sense to me, so I was shocked to hear she was developing the project into a full-length book afterwards. I wonder how the two compare!

    Hair tip - if your dye is too bright mix in some hair conditioner into the dye then you’ll get a more pastel colour straight away without having to wash it. When I had purple hair I kept pre-mixed dye & conditioner in the shower and just put it on every other time I washed my hair.

    Two thoughts on Alphabetical Diaries. Firstly, with all the talk of how reading diaries could be seen as intrusive, Heti has done something really interesting by publishing it herself (giving permission for people to read it) and splitting up the entries (encoding it and making it impossible for people to truly comprehend what she was thinking/experiencing). Secondly, that cover would have worked great for all the 2010s book cover tags that wanted people to find a book cover with only words on it 😂

    funny story. i started Project Hail Mary a while ago and dropped it coz i didn't like the main character's "written voice". then last week saw a few people in this community say they loved it and that they really liked the audiobook - so i picked it up again WITH THE AUDIOBOOK (thanks audible free trial ) aaaand read it in 2 days! IT'S SO LOVELY and possibly one of the best audiobooks i've listened to in a while. the narration is fantastic plus other tidbits in the production that just worked great! so thanks Books Unbound people 🥳

    Motherhood is one of my die-hard favorite books of all time so I was excited for Alphabetical Diaries! Initially I got it digitally through my library and realized quickly it's a read that requires the physical copy; there are some beautiful sentences that I would've highlighted and wanted the ability to flip back to on a whim...so it's a soft DNF until a thrifted copy finds me, because I too have a book buying problem 😅

I think I bite off more than can handle. By April I got to a point of ‘blah’ . My last trip the library, I borrowed 3 memoirs by female politicians, I don’t read this genre. These books are so big and heavy, I think they be my mashed potatoes.

    How I think of Gertrude Stein's writing is, every sentence is like a brushstroke of a painting, and if thats what she's trying to do, I'm like, I get it but I still don't enjoy reading it! 😂 The autobiography of Alice B Tolkas is her best, imo.

    I actually read The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein last year and it was way more readable than her „language experiments“. But it is her own memoirs written in the third person singular which is a little weird 😂 she was a very original character I suppose and I have very much mixed feelings.

Right now I feel like I am the only one who did not like this one and I am looking forward to hear your perspective. I picked it up for the same reasons as you guys and I am a fan of the books „before the coffee gets cold“ which it is compared to a lot. I'm really disappointed to hear that you are still supporting Chapters/Indigo/Coles after I have commented multiple times to let you know that their CEO has a foundation that recruits people to fight in the Israeli Occupation Forces. The least we can do at this time as book lovers is to stop supporting a company that is directly aiding in the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. I have unsubscribed from the channel and will be cancelling my bookmark subscription. I honestly feel really sad about this as Books Unbound has been my favourite podcast for a few years.
    I encourage you both and anyone who is reading this to support small, local bookshops over the Indigo corporation. The convenience of shopping at Indigo is not more important than the lives of Palestinian civilians.

    • @seanandernacht800
      @seanandernacht800 7 месяцев назад +2

      It really is a shame that they're not taking this matter seriously. It made me so sad when Bisan posted the video last week happily showing off the first two books she's had since this started, which she got from someone who recovered them from a bombed building. That could be any of us!
      Even if Indigo wasn't supplying soldiers to Israel, it still sucks to be supporting a huge corporation over your local mom & pop bookstore! It's literally so easy to not shop at Indigo

      I was unaware of this connection, so I'll be curtailing my spending at Indigo, so thanks for that info. However, it's a bit harsh to stop supporting the podcast; in this way, you're punishing "the little guys" when it would be more effective to just keep putting the info out there, create more awareness. Ariel is not the bad guy here!

    • @jesseletford4371
      @jesseletford4371 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@brasdorgal I don't have any obligation to support this podcast monetarily and nor does anyone else. I'm choosing not to spend my money and time on someone who is supporting an apartheid regime with their money.
      If a few thousand people hear this podcast and hear that they are supporting Indigo, that's a few thousand people who could be made aware that they should stop supporting Indigo if Ariel and Raeleen chose to address it. Neither of them have said anything about the Palestinian genocide that I am aware of, and we know that they have spoken up about social issues before like BLM, so it's not as if they aren't socially conscious and aware of what's happening.
      My money and time are my own and right now I am doing the best that I can to not support people or companies who are complicit in Palestinian genocide, no matter how big or small they are.
