I forgot about this game! I’m having a bit of a Fighting Fantasy fix at the moment so will have to buy this game. I remember enjoying it loads as a kid. Looking at that board again over 30 years later is really nostalgic!
I still have my copy of this game from the 80s. I painted the miniatures back then when I could do a passing John Blanche impression. Contrary to your review, it's one of my favorite and most played board games. In recent years I've played it with my son a couple of times - we both had fun and some laughs when my character was vanquished repeatedly by the giant rat!
Haha i guess i am the one guy on BGG that did came up with some special abilities for the different heroes :D i just randomly stumbled over your channel and i really enjoyed the content so far! As for the miniatures in this game: i just really love them, they have that very simple, archetypical look to them that i love. I thought it was very disappointing that they did not have any special characteristics. Nowadays i mainly use them for HeroQuest.
Thanks for the nostalgic video. I still have this game from 80's and is still in reasonable shape and I also still have most of the pad intact. That's because we just used the same sheet over and over (used sparingly as you couldn't just print or photocopy back then!). This game has more to give than your review provides. The competitive play provides a lot of fun with 6 players as you can team up for a while and then they turn on each other for the treasure. The randomness of the encounters, treasure and the maze makes for repayable games. I played this a lot back in the day (still makes it to the table occasionally)and indeed my eldest recently bought it recently for less than £20 because he had great memories of it. Back when this was released, the choices of board games were limited, so nostalgia may be on my side (similar to HeroQuest - which I still think is brilliant) but the this game is quite faithful to the feel of the book and is well worth owning, especially if you like the Fighting Fantasy books. Not just for curiosity but to actually play.
Glad you like it so much! That’s awesome. One of the only truly favorable opinions I’ve heard of the game. It’s always great when a game can speak to you.
I had some of the Jackson CYOA books and had the first three of Lone Wolf series. I am the same, i dont know why i got rid of them. I felt stupid when i began getting back into collecting stuff few years ago... for giving away my toy collections and books back when i was around highschool grad age. Lol would have been worth ridiculous amount of money lately. I still had all my comicbook character figure collections though, and did keep a few of my original star wars figures. BobaFett.
After reading the Hobbit , subsequent to a primary school teacher guiding the class through reading out loud the Weirdstone of Brisingammen ( teacher was a sneaky beggar, gifted in getting kids to read for pleasure) I remember emabarking on LOTR at the same time as this came out, led me to Howard n Lovecraft n was damned as a fantasy / DnD vet forever more .... Baldur's Gate/ Skyrim / Witcher games hasn't helped lol ... FYI don't regret a minute being a desperately shy 10 year being made to read out loud in class ... adored this, Forest of Doom and the Sorcery / Shammuntati Hills that came after
there was a board game ah its basically the book played out in board form? not knowing which way to go i suppose is some of the charm of the book but that board/map is cool
Childhood memories, I even remember who preferred and played which character. I honestly don't remember the game very much, besides that the artwork was nice. Sometimes I just brought it out to take a closer look at the board and other components. I'm not surprised though that the game did not age very well.
I almost bought one of these a year r so ago. But i wanted to buy some other games, so i couldnt afford them all. It just was such a nostalgic ,cool looking game but i kept watching reviews about it and got talked out of buying it pretty much. Lol. I just was always into those fantasy and adventure genre stories as a kid and never had the opportunity to buy those games where i live in podunk that didnt have much places that sold games like that back in the older days. So, now when i see them i want to buy them. Lol
I have a reprint of the book but had the original in the 80’s. I don’t remember the board game. Your lucky to have a great copy. It looks like it wasn’t played much at all given all the unused player sheets. Check out Bardsung on Kickstarter. Apparently Ian Livingstone is involved. Looks good.
Do you know where it is mentioned Ian Livingstone is involved in Bardsung? Don’t seem to see anything mentioned on the Kickstarter page. I am waiting for more details on the choose your adventure side before pledging as it seems very similar to classic Warhammer quest already. The minis looks like good proxy as well. Edit: Found it. He is a guest writer.
Thanks for the great video! You are right about that board, looks fabulous. Too bad the game is OOP and so expensive to buy at this point. If I could get it cheap I probably would just for the board.
I can't find the 25th anniversary edition of the book at a reasonable price. Getting the fighting fantasy books with the old illustrations is such a mess and I am not ready to invest too much for them.
I think the one i bought was a reprint, it has a gold foil texture, its larger than some of the ones i had when i was a kid in the early 80s. Of course i had the US versions which were like typical smallish paperback books. The newer one i bought came from UK i guess, which i didnt know when i bought it and it cost about ten dollars, which isnt too bad.
What’s a very good dungeon FANTASY not sci-fi, MINIATURES not cards, proper DUNGEON/TERRAIN not a map, game kind of like heroquest but more up to date and is very playable? Thanks
@@TheDungeonDive thanks so much:) any others also let me know. The urgency is due to the fact that whenever the subject is presented it is often some sci-fi game or some horrible map and card system. Nothing you can paint:)

Yeah! The map is super cool.
Oh, there was a board game too! - I'm checking this video because there's a Switch game with his name on it.
Nice!
It started as a game book!
I bought yesterday the warlock at firetop mountain for the switch and was pleasingly surprised that it was an actual table top game
Enjoyed this.
Thank you!

The price really jumped the last couple of years. Not sure why. I got mine for $40 just a couple years ago.
Board game geek has a few for 40usd
@@SELindberg Thanks for the tip! Somehow I always forget to check the Market when on BGG lol
Well, I just got one of them! Sorry. I think there is still one English version left and a few German ones
Nice
How many Gold Tiles there is?
No clue.

I don't think the books are worth the collector's prices, unless you really just need that nostalgia fix.
