12/29/23 worked for me. Pc was freezing up constantly and was slow as hell, once it finished deleted history, cookies and cache,. Pc is like runs like new. Nothing was lost or changed after installation, couldn't be happier. Thx Trevor.

@@danielmorgado1613 It's been a while since I did it, but from what I recall, the user name and password remain intact. I don't remember having to do anything in regards to that. However, be aware that ultimately, this did not fix my problem as I originally thought when I made my comment. In the end, I had to make a complete list of all my software and all the logins/passwords for those that had one, made sure I had a way to reinstall everything, and then I had to do the reinstall of Windows where it wipes out the programs/apps. Then I had to reinstall everything. Doing that was the only fix for the problem I had. It was a hassle but it was worth it in the end.

Absolutely worked! 13/3/2024 Switched on a pc that I hadn't used for nine months. Loads of updates and it crashed in the middle of soemthing. Lost all serach functions, notepad, paint etc etc
Tried restore to a previous day, all the adviser restarts of services. registry hacks, nothing.
Tried this, two hours later all back up and running. Well, I lost my layout of icons on the backdrop. Should have taken a screen shot, but perhps it was due a tidy up anyway. Thanks for putting such a clear explanation up.

The only way I am personally aware to do this is to activate a "further" version of windows key. Update, then doing this process would be a little redundant but I guess if the update after registering a key above your windows version (ie: home -> pro). If that didn't solve the problem you have going this route isn't a bad thing.

Hi man ...I have a dual boot system with win 7 and win 10 each OS is on different drives windows 10 and 7 are mentioned on the boot screen and did work ...untill the latest windows 10 update ... Yes I'm blaming the update as it was working perfectly before anyway.... When clicking on win 10 it seems to work with the dots going round in a circle then ..I get a blank screen ...all seems ok with the pc as all fans lights and blinking hd lights are going but ..just a black screen ...I've left this for around 2hrs in the hope that something happens but no nothing did ....... So I tried all the usaul safe mode stuff and still nothing ...I've heard of a way using the windows creation tool to fix an already installed win 10 without losing all my programs and files ..but I'm not a tech savvy person ..any hint on this issue would be extremely appreciated...thank you

My laptop has been playing up for a few months - won't install updates, keeps undoing changes, search bar on taskbar is no longer working. It's also really slow. I was going to bite the bullet and look to get a new laptop but a couple of people suggested reinstalling the OS. Is this process a good step in trying a home fix?
