My father was selected to go Japan for advance study but he told me that the French did not promote education for all Vietnamese children. He said to me that i still remember to this day: Vietnamese Children must have a fair chance to go to school, enjoy their childhood. So he joined Vietminh to fight against the French. He is one of the Vietnamese soldiers pulling tanks to the battle field in Dien Bien Phu. what do we all learn? it is the willingness of people to die for their country, determined the outcome of the war. Vietnam is at peace. the Vietnamese people are known for working hard, working smart and getting help if needed. she will rise
The French deep penetration units worked with many local tribesmen , who hated the Communist Viet Minh . They seem to have been ordered to make their way out , towards French lines , after Dienbienphu and the ceasefire, but not all of them made it . Some , however, did .
Lazy historians should have dug deeper into what happened at Dien Bien Phu. The battle destroyed the fighting ability of the Viet Minh as far as the main force units. Read Nikita Khrushchev's memoir, the part dealing with the battle of Dien Bien Phu. After they had won the battle the Viet Minh leadership went to Moscow & Beijing and requested that the USSR & China intervene in Indochine like they had in Korea. Their request was turned down. The Viet Minh went to the peace talks to announce that they were giving up. But France spoke first. France lost the war by half an hour.
I heard that the French left - abandoned - some of their deep penetration units behind . These units had been often successful in attacks on the Communits . This comes from a comment from Bernard B. Fall , who was a witness to the French and later American failures in Vietnam . He was himself killed whilst reporting the war when, along with an American, he was a casualty of a landmine , in 1967 .
You are right of course, but it's important to remember the men who were sent, with little choice, to do their duty, from both sides. All of them fought bravely.

So sad to die and be forgotten.

That VietMinh veteran that doesn't want to talk about it and just forget. That's the American way. Very bitter

The Heros were the VietMinh whom fought to liberated there Home land from foreign invaders invader.
I am not a "Communist" but I totally agree that the Vietminh deserved the victory for the love of their country.

Both Viet Minh and French are heroes
Eisenhower vetoed american involvement saying wrong war
Wrong time
1964 a different attitude!
Sound?
Of course the French lost. They always do.
