6G is the position you have when you weld the joint. 6G or Arkansas bellhole is the pipe on a 45 degree angle with no way to rotate the pipe on that angle. Look up 1G, 2G,3G,4G and 5G as positions and rotations of the pipe as it is being welded. 6G being the hardest to weld!
I’m a Pipefitter out of local 25 , worked with a few 798 members over the years, great guys and can stick weld like no other local!! Love seeing these videos, keep them up. Anyway, see a lot of people saying hand on here. We call people hand too. But the guys that aren’t gonna make it, we call fingers. Cause they ain’t never gonna make a hand .
Mr. Ross....the torch is probably called that because many people use one to burn weeds out of the fence rows....just a suggestion....love the vids man!
Hey Justin, this one had my friends in stitches! They never seen a pipeline, much less worked one. I got excited to share this one, and of course, I had to define the terms before you did! :)) I scored a 100%, and they laughed their ....off! Thank you, 'Hand'! 'Hand' : That guy or gal you may work with and respect for their ability on the pipelines, or that guy or gal that you see in the store (but never met) in their starched shirts, puffy hats, ....and you know just by looking at him/her, that he or she is a 'pipeline hand'. Great video! Brings back fond memories! Thank you very much!
You might already know this but pipe bevels used to be 37 and 1/2 degrees. The old weld weaves were uphill and wide. The Trans Alaska Pipeline reduced that bevel to 30 degrees. What allowed this was high penetration down hill rods .What was called the" cell 80".A German rod and forerunner of today's 80xxseries down hill pipe welding rods.Less weld downhill therefore faster with less heat affected zones. On the 48 inch the landing was 1/16th and gap 3/32.
My ex husband is a welder and my favorite was always draggin up , I use the weed burner to start a real good fire in the fire pit 😂, and I’ll never forget when an operator a few years ago was talking about some girls he would take back to the housing and in the mornings if I saw the girls stumbling out he’d laugh and say “wine em dine em pipeline em. “ lol
Great content. You provide a very valuable service. A lot of guys are "job security" types. It is so cool that your willing to share and teach. May all your two holes be level!
Back in the 60s and early 70s (I'm 75) we used to sometimes send the bussy to town to get us some "jungle" which was bread and ham and all the makings for lunch sandwiches. Ever heard "jungle" used that way Austin?
Here in Utah we call them ditch torches but use them to burn weeds. Here in the high desert ditches and canals might be the only area around for miles with water. It is common for weeds 'think tumble' to grow or collect in these ditches. To avoid the vegetation clogging the canals you walk the banks with your ditch torch burning them, hence weed torch I would imagine.
Darin Rothwell nah it’s stick using two rods basically you have one in your stinger like normal and then you have one in your hand like a filler rod like you would tig and then use that to help fill bigger gaps or if the rod is too thin that’s what Texas tig is
Bell holes are a lot better now than when I was working. The ditch used to be straight up 20 feet with no protection. Often it was caving in. I was popular as a helper because I didn't mind digging out a larger bell whole so the older welders could get far back from the pipe so they could see the bevel on the bottom.
Really good videos. Keep me up man, second gen. Pipeliner here. I wish I had watched your videos before I got started strawing for bend crews. 3 years ago.
Weed burner could also mean there was a stoner on the job, as in we sent that weed burner down the road. Welded lots of pipe, thick pipe, thin pipe, long pipe and short pipe all up-hill and inside the perimeter of the Chevron Refinery El Segundo Ca. If you are serious and want to advance your trade as a welder I suggest getting a copy of "Welding Terms and Definitions" published by the American Welding Society, Miami Fl. Thanks Austin I learned a few things from your presentation.
I’m enjoying these Videos very much having never been on a Downhill Line. I’m retired aged 74 yrs, I spent over 30 yrs in L/H’s, and Precious Metals T.I.G. I have an old friend who has been a Welding Pipeliner using Down Hill rods, but he also Specialise in Automatic Machines on Lay Barges. Could you send me the link to download you Pipeline terms Book.
How about H I = height of instrument. Running pipe in a right away and anywhere we need to know the elevations of grade and the pipe line so we start out with the height of the transit. Great videos! Thank you and keep them coming.
I’ve been a machinist or “Shop Hand” most of my life. You either. Make a Hand or you don’t. Means you can either do a great job or not. I’m also a welder/ fabricator but definitely not a pipeline welder. I have really enjoyed listening to you and learning from you. A Weed Burner is also known as a Pear Burner because ranchers used to burn the thorns off of prickly pear so their cattle/ goats could eat them during a drought. Slang from West Texas…. “That man is richer than six foot up a bulls ass”,, lol. Think about it. Keep up the great job Austin.
a weed burner is just that. sometimes used by Texas ranchers to " burn pear" (prickly pear cactus). This burns the spikes off sufficiently so the cows can eat it. Also, a Tex-Mex dish is napolito, which is prickly pear prepared as a vegetable, with out the spikes of course.
Hey Austin; I have a bobcat 250 diesel, whip and stinger, and a ford XL 2006 f150 with offroad wheels. I want to start chasing jobs with my rig but I don't know how to build connections. Also, do I need to have a TIG rig for this? I live in the South East Alabama area.
Just so you know I believe it is called a weed burner because the kind a torch use is commonly used in gardening and all that to remove brush and walkways and driveways and that kind of thing
Welding sled always Ment a muddy mess. Joint/double joint, fittin, sag, skid, PI, doping crew, tie in, Jeep, pancake, stinger. I remember in 09 when I started pipelining I had no clue.
Made me laugh about the “itty bitty covered wagon going up the pipe” the welders i worked for as a helper wanted “NO wagon tracks” and we called the torch a “turd burner” they all liked me because I answered the question right on our 1st day on the row...they asked “whats the #1 rule to being a helper?” And i said “the welder is always right” hHa i got picked 1st!!!
“Weed burner” is used because in some cropping areas propane burners are used to burn weeds in the row without damaging the crop. A small weed can be burned (killed) without damage to the bigger crop like corn or cotton for instance.
Somebody below mentioned a ditch box (shoring). My dad referred to his remote as a ditch box. I always wondered why they called a hoosier pole that. Did somebody from Nebraska invent it?
Use a couple of reciprocating saw blades to set your gap. Put a 1/16" landing on your bevels. Tack 4 places about 1" long. Set up at 3 Rd gear and 45. Keep your rod pointed at the center of the pipe. Push the rod into the bevels. The flux should rub on the pipe as you go.
Sloppin dope. Old slang. I started off in “64 sloppin’ dope. Did that cross country until about “74/“75. Then the outlawed the Berricks enamel (hot door). Miserable (and I mean miserable) stuff to work with. Always had a job though. That was a good reason to get in the operators, because nobody wanted to pull the dope pot. The smoke would just blister you. Now you need to have a full hazmat team to take it off of the pipe. Worked on the pipeline for fifty years. I’m 75 years old and i’m surprised I’m still alive working in that crap. Lost a few friends from melanoma. So far my lungs are doing great. My dad worked in that still for years and got through it too. How did you know if it was bad dope or good dope (asphalt tar)? When you pulled up on the right a way in the winter time in Wyoming and the welders were eating lunch by the pot to keep warm.😅😂🤣
Good video! When y'all are working off a skid do you take your welding machine off your truck to use or does the company have machines on there for you? Also I haven't been around a SA 200. Since it is a DC machine, is the plug on the front just for the remote or can you use it for a grinder or other electrical tools?
I'm new to the game. I graduated from school in 2015 and have been dealing with family and personal issues ever since. I done with that mess, and I have been trying to break out....so... How do I do that.
I was told Arkansas bellhole was named after Arkansas because of all the hills on the northwesternish side of Arkansa are all in one way or the other look to be at an angle (°45) but why arkansa and not any other place I have no clue
In Texas it's called a pear burner because back in the dustbowl farmers and ranchers had to burn needles off prickly pear to feed to livestock because crops would not grow.
That would be the land that we are allowed to be on for our work, we have right of way which includes temporary workspace. Then easement which is the permanently "purchased" land for the line.
Actually it's a roofing torch. It was for melting tar in the roofing trade. But yes it's been used to burn weeds, which truthfully it doesn't do a very good job at.
Called Arkansas bellhole because of the hilly terrain often found in Arkansas, so a typical weld there is more like a 6G than your usual 5G in flatter country.
Draggin up is my favorite term, and favorite part of the job
You didn’t say anything about kicking your bottles
6G is the position you have when you weld the joint. 6G or Arkansas bellhole is the pipe on a 45 degree angle with no way to rotate the pipe on that angle. Look up 1G, 2G,3G,4G and 5G as positions and rotations of the pipe as it is being welded. 6G being the hardest to weld!

That is correct
hell yeah thats all mine gets used for at home

Lol man I enjoyed this, sometimes I forget other people might not know this terminology. Good job

Worked pipelines too. Jungle lunch and bussey were used.
This one of my favorite welding channels. Im in welding school. You give me hope to actually get work after.

Favorite term Texas tig. Use it alot around our farm
What's that a gas torch and a piece o f bailing wire for filler?
Darin Rothwell nah it’s stick using two rods basically you have one in your stinger like normal and then you have one in your hand like a filler rod like you would tig and then use that to help fill bigger gaps or if the rod is too thin that’s what Texas tig is
Good job Ross. I always enjoy watching your videos dude.
Always liked hippie rod, used when 7018 was new on the scene. Perception was all the young longhairs liked it because it was easier to run.

Received my dictionary very quickly. Thanks and please keep the awesome videos headed our way.
You sounded almost like an auctioneer when this video started!
I love your videos, i am not much of a welder, inspected for 6.5 years now getting into welding. Keep the videos goin.
Really good videos. Keep me up man, second gen. Pipeliner here. I wish I had watched your videos before I got started strawing for bend crews. 3 years ago.
Thanks for your time to share this.

Your amazing Austin
Thanks for posting
I enjoyed this video, thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thanks for the great video Bro
I like what you are doing here man! Keep it up!!
How about your fire axe! Great videos Austin!😃👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸.
Fire axe is your cutting torch!
In Australia, we just call them a "Hot Axe".
@@scottcarr3264 Thank you sir!
Should we drag up and leave em in a bind or stick around and put ‘em in one
Great video. Do you ever see surveyors asbuilting the welds and weld mapping the joints?
Oh ya. I see surveyors all the time out on the job.
My wife’s grandfather was a welder in the UA in Portsmouth,Va he would drag up so quick they called him “Suitcase Smith”!
Is it best to get a newer miller or lincoln welder or are the older more common lincolns still a safe bet?
a weed burner is just that. sometimes used by Texas ranchers to " burn pear" (prickly pear cactus). This burns the spikes off sufficiently so the cows can eat it. Also, a Tex-Mex dish is napolito, which is prickly pear prepared as a vegetable, with out the spikes of course.

In Canada the weed burner is called the Tiger torch as Tiger is a popular brand that makes them here.
Just so you know I believe it is called a weed burner because the kind a torch use is commonly used in gardening and all that to remove brush and walkways and driveways and that kind of thing

Nice video ya'll sound just like a boilermaker crew.....lol👍
Somebody below mentioned a ditch box (shoring). My dad referred to his remote as a ditch box. I always wondered why they called a hoosier pole that. Did somebody from Nebraska invent it?
Hoosiers are from Indiana.
How do I apply for these jobs? I’m looking to get into the pipeline industry but I can’t find anything on Indeed. I’m in Denver
Hi Austin I’m trying to break out as a welder but I can’t seem to get the root pass in on 6g carbon pipe Heeeeelllllp
I see he don’t answer no post never again
Use a couple of reciprocating saw blades to set your gap. Put a 1/16" landing on your bevels. Tack 4 places about 1" long. Set up at 3 Rd gear and 45. Keep your rod pointed at the center of the pipe. Push the rod into the bevels. The flux should rub on the pipe as you go.
Outstanding...
The side booms are often called 'sidewinders' in the railroad industry.
Can you talk about l.a city test for structural steel and 232 flux cord wire?
Have you done any work in West Virginia. Some of the terrain looks familiar.

You should get a go pro and do a POV weld on some pipe!
I have a pancake hood that a charter member of,798, his son gave it to me before he passed.
Good video!
When y'all are working off a skid do you take your welding machine off your truck to use or does the company have machines on there for you?
Also I haven't been around a SA 200. Since it is a DC machine, is the plug on the front just for the remote or can you use it for a grinder or other electrical tools?
Some welders will take theirs off and use them but I've also seen rentals be used.
Depends on the contractor, some supply the machines on the sleds while others ask to use the welder's machine off their rig.
Also, you can run tools off the receptacle. Obviously it will have to be designed for DC power.
How do you measure the hole to cut when you tie in at a 45?
I'm new to the game. I graduated from school in 2015 and have been dealing with family and personal issues ever since. I done with that mess, and I have been trying to break out....so... How do I do that.

Two Tone,PI,Winch Tractor some more terms for ya!
other terms dingleberry, roustabout, and pear burner.
what is the difference of Gang vs Fusion?
can someone help me?
I want to know what 1G 2G 3G etc means....
Nice videos
My welder said something about the fire line what’s that?
"drag up" tank was the term to describe a tank that guys had built in to their rig so they got to drive home on company gas when the job was over.
That intro was funny!
Have y done a video on the pipe fitters books?
Not yet.
Does bending the pipe hinder the structural integrity? Is there a max slope they can bend it to?
No it doesn’t. There is a max amount of bend they can put it it. It differs from different sizes of pipe.
My favorite words are roustabout and shitslinggers
Good video 👍
My favorite word was "drag up."
Weed burner- also used for burning weeds that grow between CJs in concrete
Austin what is the brand of leather knee pad that you use - thanks
Tac and hide is who I got mine from. It’s just a guy I know. Idk if he has a website or not. I think he’s got a Facebook page.
I've heard Arkansas bell hole came from the hills and mountains in Arkansas mainlines
Ngl I think it would be awesome if you sat down with Andy and did like an interview type deal and just get his story
Draggin up
In Texas it's called a pear burner because back in the dustbowl farmers and ranchers had to burn needles off prickly pear to feed to livestock because crops would not grow.
Can’t forget about survey!!
Don't forget the "goat" on steel tank builds! (automatic welding machine)
Weed burner got its name from farmers using them to torch weeds also called tiger torch
Dingle bells, on the rig they have ruff necks. Down hand, suck back. Hot pass, stringer bead. Welding bug.
Magnum! Those guys are my buddies.
Dont know how many times IV been talking to ppl that have never been on a right a way. And you always get the same look of massive confusion
Firing line or draggin up
I like the term “pimp” for helpers
arkansas bell hole is supposedly because in arkansas the pipelines are up and down over hills and moutains so its at a 45
Could you please explain exactly what the "right of way" is?
That would be the land that we are allowed to be on for our work, we have right of way which includes temporary workspace. Then easement which is the permanently "purchased" land for the line.
Actually it's a roofing torch. It was for melting tar in the roofing trade. But yes it's been used to burn weeds, which truthfully it doesn't do a very good job at.
I’m usually dragging up because of my 3rd slag line
051821-----my favorite words is run off or ran off---meaning layoff is payoff about oct or early nov right time of year
“Weed burner” is a weed burner- LP torch manufactured to burn weeds but best way to preheat
FYI on a side note, the screen shot for this video makes you look like Benny Hill. LOL
One bead hand from the promised land is my favorite term!
It's called a weed burner or brush burner because that's what it is. we use them for pre heating pipe but they are designed for burning brush.
You don't use um
@@snowfall1771 I use them daily.
Hey, I work in the mines and you wouldn’t believe the lingo there either!!!
It’s called a weed burner because that’s also what it’s used for, burning weeds in cracks in sidewalks and drives rather than using chemicals.
RUN!!!!!!
9 line bind
Called Arkansas bellhole because of the hilly terrain often found in Arkansas, so a typical weld there is more like a 6G than your usual 5G in flatter country.
Good move taking the glasses off the glare was strong
