When OJ passed away this year, one of the first things I thought was that it was a shame that Norm McDonald wasn’t around anymore. He would have had a comedy field day after the death of OJ.
Norm was a legend. When he came back to SNL, he said in his opening monologue that he was fired for not being funny enough, but he said it wasn't that he was funnier now, it was that the show was less funny.
The thing about SNL that most people don't recognize is that it's always been 10% hits and 90% misses. We look at all these classic clips from the golden era, but those are just the ones that hit. Norm was different, though. His Weekend Update segment was always gold.
Norm Macdonald with Jerry Seinfeld in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee was a great look into the laughter Norm gave to even some of comedy's biggest names.
I wish you did an entire series on comedians. I love it so much because your passion shines through and also talking about comedy is one of my favorite thing.
125k views in the 1st 15 hours, despite it appearing in my recommendeds. I probably skipped past it 6x before finally clicking. But if it takes off somehow, then we'll probably see more. Unless oompa sees this, and decides to make 20 of them to jumpstart the genre🤣 who knows.
I remember trying to convince people in the 90s that Norm was the best comedian of our era but most completely disagreed with me. 30 years later and people are finally recognizing his comedic genius.
Nick Swardson punished a bad crowd last year, they were unruly so he started pretending to be in a loop where he set up a joke and never told the punchline and it actually made news. The media in the crowd were so mad at him they tried to form it that he was on drugs and needed help LOL
his last stand up he put out. when he's just in his house, no audience, no laugh track. telling these jokes he has was my favorite. still making himself laugh from funny thoughts he has.
It's because it was legitimately not on purpose and he wasn't actually hateful. If there wasn't a bit, he wasn't going to be hurtful for no reason. He accidentally said "down syndrome" while trying to avoid the R word not realizing how much worse that is lol
Norm was and is still the goat. Really sad that i discovered him fairly late but at least i had a lot of material to watch. Wish you all the best. I hope you're together with all your best friends in the afterlife. ❤
Norm was a guy that gave the normal life a try and became a man of his passions, and made us all laugh along the way because that's what he loved to do, it takes one to know one and norms perspective will forever be cherished, we could never be as funny as him but he's like a life lesson, enjoy what you do and make sure it makes YOU happy, bet you all those jokes he told he loved because he wasn't laughing by himself, he was laughing with us all
Thank you for this tribute, Norm Macdonald was one of a kind and is sorely missed. A legend! In all my years of watching RUclips, I have only commented someones video I think maybe twice. I felt deeply the need to comment on this video
@Hugh-Janus1369 the "favorite" in between my and comedian is heavily implied, and fairly simple to understand. I see why that's difficult for you specifically though.
Norm was a great guy. I went to Algonquin. Privileged to have had a beer with him at the Observatory when I went there. Saw him again when he MC'd at a comedy club here in Ottawa, too. RIP Norm.
Great video man see this is why people my age can get along with you I'm 45 and I really do miss Norm such a great character he was hilarious with every delivery
Norms appearance on the Roast of Bob Saget was amazing, and the audiences reaction perfectly encapsulates how some ppl and some don't, as about 95% of the audience was mostly silent, but about 5% of the crowd hysterical
Amazing video, Norms an absolute legend of the comedy scene, so much of his mannerisms and cadence are drawn inspiration/ replicated by the biggest comedians today, his book is an amazing read and very easy to digest, gives a very real look at the life of a comedian
If you haven't already, watch him hosting the RUclips Big Live Comedy Show. Absolute gold watching everyone drowning in the mire of conversational handbrakes Norm is ripping up.
He actually discussed on a podcast a few years before he died, about an actor who chose to keep his cancer a secret. Norm said he likes to think if he was in that situation, he’d keep it to himself as well. He was a few years into his cancer diagnosis at that point
I can see norms style of comedy in oompas delivery. The way Caleb laughs as he insinuates something horrible while trying not to smile making as laugh at macabre situations. I can see the inspiration from norm.
Hey man, I really love you for this. I feel like this couldn't have come at a better time and it couldn't be more relevant to me personally. Everything you said 100% agree with and I really enjoyed every moment. On top of the fact that I've been listening to your stuff your stuff all day when I've been working on a very important project. Just thanks man
I'm a simple person, I see a thumbnail with Norm Macdonald 911 joke, I click on it In all seriousness, I miss Norm. Absolutely loved his comedy, and that shield of mystery around him. You never knew if he was serious or not and I think that made him special person with unique outlook on life. Man forever will be an absolute legend
It’s crazy how I remember all of this stuff pretty vividly and I was born in 88. I honestly am starting to think if I wasn’t watching this every Saturday night I wouldn’t have nearly as much of a grasp on pop culture if that time
Every documentary on comics has Norm as "The Comics Comic", where literally EVERY stand up over a 30 year or so span considered Norm the funniest of them all...the 1 who could make all the other comics laugh and not just the audience.
Norm has left a huge void in the world of comedy. Not many who can fill his shoes. He was always beautifully unpredictable on set. So rest in peace Norm. We miss you dearly 🙏
Kind of funny that his only ever apology was related to ableism because literally every single disabled person I’ve ever met (including myself) is utterly *obsessed* with norm
Norm is a legend. I only really discovered him about a year before he passed but I devoured every piece of Norm content I could in that time. The thing that stuck out to me the most was how much he acted like a lost old man but was actually extremely smart and well read. Also how he did NOT hold back no matter who he was talking to. You knew he was going to speak his mind and then play it off like he was dumb and didnt know what he was even talking about. Miss you Norm. Always will be the goat.
I used to work at Yuk Yuk’s back when Norm really started to take off in the 90’s. It was funny to hear all of the bitter comics slamming him claiming he stole all of their bits and wasn’t funny. I bought it for a bit but when you see him in conversations and just being so quick you know they were all just bitter that it wasn’t them.
There can only ever be one Norm on this planet… so thankful I grew up seeing him in his prime, and getting to witness the best of comedy. I know you’re genuinely a fan Caleb, because you’re about 10 years behind watching Norm live in his prime. RIP Norm MAC Donald

Great video. I have never directly watched or sought out Norm but when I see him do his things its absolutely hysterical. I need to binge his stuff one day
He’s definitely one of my favourite comedians. Even my 11 year old sister makes the “I didn’t even know he was sick” joke. He died less than a month before my dad. That was a rough time.
I will always love Norm for introducing Artie Lange and Howard Stern. Artie just tagged along for a Stern Show appearance and Norm talked Artie up so much, he was invited onto the show and it eventually lead to him being a long term cohost. “I’ve always heard when you die to cancer you LOSE, but the way I see it, when you die, so does the cancer, that’s not a loss, that’s a draw”
Unless you're that one lady whose cancer celles are used for cancer research, her cancer cells will outlive her for several decades.
HOW did I never hear that?
I've always loved Norm and my dad passed off the C.
If that's the way quoted Norm, then it kind of makes sense that people were sighing because you didn't set the joke up right.
@ or the fact that I made a joke at my grandfathers wake, again most if not all my relatives laughed minus my aunts
When OJ passed away this year, one of the first things I thought was that it was a shame that Norm McDonald wasn’t around anymore. He would have had a comedy field day after the death of OJ.
He was proven innocent tho😮
Norm was a legend. When he came back to SNL, he said in his opening monologue that he was fired for not being funny enough, but he said it wasn't that he was funnier now, it was that the show was less funny.

The best part of his monologue, "We've got a really bad show!"

The thing about SNL that most people don't recognize is that it's always been 10% hits and 90% misses. We look at all these classic clips from the golden era, but those are just the ones that hit.

For real, I would rather die than learn to speak quebecois 😂
I would ww2 spy my self if I had
Every Canadian I know has the same French mastery as Norm. Meaning they say French words in a half hearted French adjacent accent and that’s it
That’s just idiotic
Norm was the smartest guy in the room pretending to be the dumbest guy in the room.
I didn't even know he was sick. The ultimate joke for the ultimate comedian.
Yeah Sean Lock over here in the UK didn't tell the media he had cancer but ofc we all guessed when he debuted his Walter White look.
Probably because it's not any of our business.
wow you guys commented on a Norm video without really knowing the joke huh
He told no one.
Cutting out the end of his pie-chart joke is criminal.
just kidding we don''t hire women 🤣

He wasn't that old!
44 and same.
Same here. I’m 53. Those were the last glory days of SNL.
Do you remember the will Ferrell tiny cellphone bit? Prob my favorite. Of many I suppose.
