Drive past all of this nearly every day. Even Sasol is closed down now. Miss seeing all the bustle that was involved with the Pennzoil refinery.

Very interesting and enjoyable video. Grew up in the area, but appreciate the history despite it being economically depressed.

Been there many times, had relatives in Oil City and we would visit from Indiana when I was a kid. Really miss those beautiful rolling hills and the smell of oil drifting in when you drove down the road! Went to Pithole and Drake's well with my grandparents probably 4 or 5 times.

Inspected some of the old Pennzoil tanks there back in the late 90's. Understood why they called it Oil Creek after...

One of the problems is that the oil ran out; many years ago, I ran across the Pennzoil sales rep for garages/service stations/dealerships in my area in the west and he said it would only be a matter of time before Pennzoil would leave Pennsylvania. (This was before the merger of Pennzoil and Quaker State) He said that the oil wells were hardly pumping any oil at all and the famous phase for years of 100% Pennsylvania oil had been gone for quite a while at that point. These days both Quaker State and Pennzoil brands are part of Shell Oil Products USA.

Oh,Yeah it’s sad ,but it was bound to happen. I heard it when I was a kid that someday pennzoil wouldn’t be there. Never believed it , but it come true. Sad when I explored the place.

I used to live right across the little crick from the post office. My mom would send me wading thru the water to get the mail. As a reward, the building that has been everything at one time or another was a convenience store with penny candy, layaway comic books, and vhs rentals. I don't remember what years specifically, but I do remember trick or treating during a blizzard in Rouseville if anyone remembers what year that was in the 90s? Wierd not seeing the Pennszoil/Quakerstate refinery there. Unless im mistaken, from the video, looks like the Wolfs Head refinery is still there further down the road, probably not operational I'd guess. Anyone from the area know if the spring by Pollys Ice cream on French crick headed towards Franklin is still running? That's the spring we always used. There was an old Erie canal historical marker hidden down by the island between Polly's and the spring across from French crick. You'd never find it if you didn't know to look for it. Tiny part of a canal is still hidden down there

That place has really changed. Thanks for the stories I always enjoy when people comment with their places they grew up and I always learn more from the area. Thanks for watching the video 👍

    • @erikwingard2684

@oldskooljoe if you haven't already found it. That erie canal marker just past Pollys headed into Franklin is waiting for you. There was a spring right where it was but I think they capped it. Start at pollys, walk the tracks toward Franklin, on the right will be french crick. Right where the trees clear and the crick is in full view you should see the down river tip of an island. The other side of the crick used to be full of logger trails. You could drive a couple miles thru the woods and arrive on the other side of french crick right there. The trees where thick enough to provide good camping on the other side. Good walleye spot when it gets cold. Cast right at the tip of the island and let your jig/minnow drift into the deep where the fast water and slow water meet. Then jig it back in hitting every rock you can on the way. You'll lose a few jigs and minis, but you'll catch more walleye. anyways get just across from the tip of the island, walk back towards polly's about 30-40, yards along french crick, try not to fall into the canal. It's lined with stone walls. You'd have to swim out (wade out more likely) into french crick to get out. The canal and sign are hidden pretty good, but they're there. If you find it, only way to celebrate is by getting some candy eyes on your Pollys ice cream cone. It's right there. Not many people know about the canal, least not when I used to camp there years ago

There used to be the Golden Dawn grocery store where the red light is... And directly across the road from that was Susie's bar and the post office.
Walk down the sidewalk... A few steps and you are at sutches..... Then there was the Candy kitchen where you could eat or buy a lot of candy.... We also had Cappy's candy store.
A nickel Coke bottle would buy you a brown little bag with candy pouring out the top!

They were all up in the church at my uncle's funeral.
