    Looks like my weekend is going to involve a hacksaw! Great to see a real life video, half of them on here make it seem so easy it's pointless. Some of us are looking at bikes 20 years old with no maintenance in that time!

    This video was extremely helpful!
    The threads on my old crank were stripped very bad, my crank puller could not screw in all the way in and ended up damaging the threads even more.
    I then took your advice and took the frame to my local mechanic (which I have a good relationship with the owner and mechanics there) and asked them to borrow their tie rod separator tool. I gave it a bunch of good whacks (without trying REALLY hard not to damage the aluminum frame, lol) around the BB and eventually came right off!
    THANKS BIKEMAN!

    Great advice Bikeman. I needed that pickle fork idea. I'd use an angle grinder rather then a hack saw.

    I think i would use a drift pin and put some penatrating oil on the shaft and wack it with a hammer from oposite sidenear the base first. I did buy a tool after i had a problem several times getting it off.. Enjoy all you video's you the man bikeman

    Greetings Bikeman, Love your videos!! I had the same problem yesterday - thread just would NOT accept the tool. So, I had a think about it, and, I decided to go to the other side of the axle, and remove the thread on that side. I pulled out the bearings, then went back around to the crank aside, and, using on old axle as a punch, hit the centre of the axle about three times, before if flew out the other side of the bike frame! Sorted! :)

    I forgot that some people don't know when they reach a limit.(In general) The pedaling has purpose to develop some play between the crank and the BB. If normal pedaling doesn't create the play needed to take the crank off by hand, try standing up. Pedal standing up 2 or 3 revolution, but at the same time try to feel if the crank is coming lose, to no have to "peel the nuts off the top tube" afterwards. Obviously standing up is risky, but the crank will not fall instantaneously.

    Google "Jacobs chuck wedges" and look for a #6 set. Should be under $10. Works similar to the pickle fork, but if you can get to two points 180 degrees apart you can drive both wedges in at the same time for an absolutely straight pull that's less likely to wallow out the crank arm, plus the shallower taper makes for easier driving.

  • @Grizzly907LA
    @Grizzly907LA 4 года назад

    I didn't use a hack saw. I used a cordless angle grinder with a cutting wheel. Dorked the bottom bracket up and dinged the bb shell a little but both cranks came off.

    there is one more way to do it.
    1 ask some friend to hold the bike
    2 put under the crank something like brick while your friend holding your bike flat in the air
    3 take a hammer and some approx half inch bolt or bar or rod or the same/inner/bolt thing of crank removal tool and put it into that hole where bottom bracket and crank are connected.
    4 one or maybe several times whack quite strong and crank will come off.
    worked for me
    without showing its hard to explain.
    i hope my comment was useful

    Do you think you could briefly heat up the crank arm around the spindle with a blow torch? The aluminum should conduct heat faster than the steel spindle and expand. Then push her off with the pickle form. What do you think?

  • @Nerodetos
    @Nerodetos 11 лет назад

    A pulley puller could work. Clamb the hooks between the crank and the axle and screw the middelpart on the end of the axle and keep turning until it will come off.

  • @florinovidiumatei4233
    @florinovidiumatei4233 11 лет назад

    1. You take the cranknut off.
    2. You pedal the bike with the crank-arm on the bike. After some minutes, because of the force applied to the crank-arm, it will automatically come off.
    3. Pedal standing up if needed.

Guy I bought it from used j b weld of some sort then he freaking welded cranks to 45th three piece bolt kit. I got it off with a plasma cutter!!

    I have a normal crank pull, but it doesnt apply to this crankset. Is there a special tool just to remove this type of crank......or maybe u can make a video. To give you a heads up, its a splined hollow BB and there is no allen key setup to take the crank off (as in the Hollowtech second edition). I can not find one video on how to remove this crank. Thanks in advance. You da man

    BMFU, first of all Happy Fathers day if it applies. If not, it seems you have some adopted sons walking around the shop. Anyhow, i had a question somewhat relative to the topic. I am trying to remove a Shimano Deore Hollowtech (first gen) from a trekking bike. Thing is that this bad boy is stuck hard.

  • @turnersparadise8368

    If you're gonna reuse the crank then you will need to cut new threads. Do this while on the bike so you can get the puller on. If you are not reusing the crank then whatever...Dremel, die grinder, drift and sledge from left side...
