Simon is so spot on about sm. Sm should really focus on the mvs and music rather than the marketing and all that. If it wasn't for exo's growl I wouldn't have continued following exo. 23 teasers made me ridiculously impatient, and I decided they weren't worth that much hype despite releasing a few good songs already. Thank God for exo 2013 proved me wrong.
That is exactly what happened to me. I'm so glad that they released Growl and showed a new side to EXO & SM's music videos.

I just wanted to say, thank you Simon and Martina for giving me such a great time with your videos in the past 10 years. I was not feeling so great in this pandemic especially lately with all kinds of news I had to endure. I happened to play Spotify and it was suggesting me kpop songs from the past 10 years and this Exo song came up and I immediately thought of this video of yours. I miss this. I still remember coming back from school on Mondays checking for your latest Kpop Music Monday. Can't believe it's been a while now. I can still feel the moment. I was happy. I'm OBSESSED with the part when Kai was dancing with the shirt, it's creative and artistic (I'm not good with words), I've never thought of something like dancing with an object besides with a mop or a broom and he did it splendidly!
And then there's Chanyeol searching for cool-looking stones and analyzing them, I love treasure hunts and adventures, and I think an old, abandoned wooden shack in the middle of a prairie is a suitable location (I don't even know how he got there)

Sehun & Luhan sitting around the campfire talking & laughing just makes me feel cheerful. They seem so calm & happy, & the atmosphere is so incredibly cozy, I just feel warm from the Hunhan feels~ When Kris stands with his arms spread out, I feel a warmth spreading in my chest. The peacefulness of his pose & his tranquil face are so calming. These vignettes both have the feeling of being content.

Its pretty easy to tell that its the same like humming lalala dadiduu to a song when you don't know the lyrics. Nothing complicated going on there.

best artsy vignette is at the 2-minute-mark, when kai dances...with his coat. this is just soo authentic.this scene goes out to all forever alones at partys/proms who dont have anyone to dance with..and kai teaches all of them a lesson: dont be ashamed to dance with your coat! and if you dont have a coat, grab your jacket, your sweater, whatever it is you want to dance with. and no one can separate you from your coat...the embodiment of all your desires and wishes...god i just teared up a little

Because of this video, all I can think of whenever I hear the song is the cowboy beat and "IIIII LOST MY PANTS".
My favorite Artsy Vignette scene is shown in snippets. It's when Lay, Chen and Xuimin (I think, can't completely make it out) are in that practice room/semi apartment and the camera moves in on Chen sipping his drink and Xuimin's in the background with that gorgeous dog. I think there's something really beautiful about it. It has a very calming and artistic feeling. Later, you cut to Lay turning around and walking towards the window. Though Lay's sometimes underrated, he really stood out to me.

I just rewatched this, and now it comes to me... All these teasers ARE possibly a cause for all the sasaengs. Too much sexual frustation for them to handle.
I don't know if it counts as an "artsy vignette scene" but my favorite part of the video is Kai's dance scene. I love how he grabbed my attention by moving so perfectly to the music and when they sing 'slow motion' he slows down. The whole setting fits perfectly and it gives a certain melancholic feeling with him dancing alone with a coat. And this scene didn't really "show him off" either, you never saw his face clearly. Instead I just remember him by that soft dancing and the feeling it gave.
I listened to the song after watching this...and I literally can't hear anything other than "I LOST MY PANTS RIPPIDO FLIPPIDO SIPPI SLOW MOTION!" XD
...back in 2012 people were already getting sick of EXO hype, imagine people now.

My favorite artsy vignette is the part where Kai and Sehun had the split screen yet synchronized/parallel dance routine because the focus for this era was the "two" and "in relation 2(punpunpun)" factors (i.e. k&m, parallel worlds etc.)
They eventually came together which emphasizes the "one" factor as well (i.e. "we are one!", the eclipse is the moon and sun as one etc.)
This scene was a symbolic portrayal of EXO and how they will be marketed and introduced as newbies which I thought was smart

My favorite artsy vignette part of the MV was when Suho was sitting the the field at the desk with books covering it and reading one before looking up and to the side. The simplicity of it just really amazed me. Like, his attention was drawn away from the book he was reading, or he read a really moving part in the book and started to think about it. It felt like such a serene moment and he was so calm and relaxed and I really enjoyed it.

The hourglass on top of the desk at 1:30 in What Is Love, both versions, is my favorite artsy vignette. There's no sand that is passing through, which represents that time has stopped. It could represent the different dimension that EXO is in/from, as time doesn't pass as it would in our world. What represents the time moving passively is the eclipse. It's representing the time as the day progresses which is also seen with the members activities. It perfectly matches the song and lyrics.

Because they just really focus on Korean songs. EXO-M more of "C-Pop" since it's Chinese. (I don't even know if C-pop is real)

The artsy vignette part of the video I like are the scenes where Kris stood there staring at oblivion (or who knows where), feeling the breeze. It's just so soothing in a way that makes me just want to stop time, look at the surroundings and appreciate it. We are all so busy now that it's pretty advisable that we should halt for a moment or two, relax, appreciate life without thinking about work/school etc.and just feel refreshed or reborn afterwards, take all the tons of stress away.

I'm not 100% sure it fits into the artsy vignette category, but my favorite scene is when you see Kai's teaser from let out the beast (around :50 / :51 second mark), and the headlights from the car behind him illuminate his silhouette as he's walking away. Also his stupid little smirk helps, but the way the wind is blowing and the particular color choices make it feel just a little bit cold and I can practically feel what it's like to be there. It's really just beautiful to me. :3
My favorite artsy vignett is when they will focus the camera on every EXos' eyes as they look at the eclipse. We all know that "The eye is the mirror of our soul" that if you'll just look at their eyes, yuo can see many emotions. The song-title asked "What Is Love" and I think they are looking for it (perhaps, it explains searching, binoculars etc.) And they saw the real "love" they are looking: perhaps the friendship they had in their co-EXO members and the love from their fans. XOXO :))
My favourite artsy-vignette was the split screen dancing with one member standing and the other in the chair and also Kai dancing and being a loner, pretending that he's dancing with his lover. The choreography was just spot on and amazing, and the music really fitted to the beat of the movements, and the background represents the loneliness that the members have to face as their superpowers are considered 'not normal' and so they have to stick together and keep it a secret... yeah!
My favourite artsy vignette is pretty much all the scene with chanyeol discovered the engraved rocks with the symbols of members' power on them and the book. I thought it was pretty cool how they kinda gave a hint of what MAMA was going to be like while still being secretive by not showing more obvious symbols (e.g. hourglass). It's like "we'll show you but we won't tell you". Plus, it was probably the more meaningful scene since there were already billions of teasers showcasing their talents :)
My favorite was when Tao is fighting the bad guys, because when I looked up the lyrics to the song I realized that the scene happens around the time when they say "Making a day feel like a minute, with you, I'm the main character of a movie". Tao's power is time manipulation, and on the scene he is fighting off all the bad guys like in a movie, I thought it was really cool they matched the lyrics to the scene :) also, I love how this scene seems to contrast with the rest. It's darker but unique!
Yayy I love this song two years later, one of my favourite k pop songs ever! D.O's voice harmonising with Baekhyun's is just too much so heavenly

I really like it when they are in the shed and the sun is shining in, it looks really beautiful and it's really amazing that they could let it look so amazing.
the part lay and friends play around in this fitness room-ish place... i mean the other members were like going on some treasure hunt, searching for clues, fighting bad guys, researching wind direction using a kite? etc. but lay was like "hey guys, let's chillax." and started dancing in front of a mirror, guys playing with a dog, and sit. it was just a bit out of place. it didn't have a sense of adventure like the other artsy vignettes had. it stood out for me that way that's why i liked it. :D
my favorite artsy vignette is when sehun dances at the phone poll and in a chair side by side. his movements are so fluid and sharp and it really shows how much potential he has as a dancer
My favorite artsy part is when they look at the eclipse and see the moon cover the sun with a rainbow-like glow. If the song is about what is love then that scene gives off the feeling that they are looking to the universe for their answer. While the rainbow-like glow is like the universe telling them that the answer they seek holds numerous answers and is unyieldingly beautiful.
Honestly, my favorite part in this music video is at time marker 1:45. The lighting is gorgeous, you have multiple streams of light coming through on the right of the frame through a cloud of translucent 'dust' while you see a character in the darkness on the opposite side of the frame. There is just enough light to touch the character's face and back in a way that makes him stand apart from all the light in the background. Spectacular lighting through out this video, but this scene wins.
My favorite artsy scene in this video was whenever they were singing in that broken down shed thing with the light streaming in, because with all the dust floating around, it almost made it look like they were surrounded by clouds, giving it an overall calming and almost mystical setting. Just the calming way they were singing, they didn't look like they were belting their hearts out but actually singing with feeling, and the setting they were in helped with the feeling.
Favorite artsy vignette scene.......... I really think it would be the scenes that showed when Chanyeol is comparing the carved unicorn in the rock with the picture from the book. Also when Baekhyun and D.O. are singing in this farm shed? In both scenes they are in this farm shed place as the background. I really liked how the lighting compliments the video. It's not too bright that it takes the attention from EXO, but it in facts illuminates and bolds EXO. It's a very well-made scene.
my favorite artsy vignette is towards the beginning when the two guys (working on learning names!) are sitting around a fire and looking at a map. Well, all scenes of them around the fire. Every year my elementary and middle schools went on a least two trips where we ended up with campfires (staying at blue ridge in the appalacian mountains, camping out at an organic farm, etc). My best friend also always has a bonfire when I'm over, so they hold special meaning to me,
My favorite artsy vignette is the scene where two of them are standing in the field staring up at the eclipse. I love how there's a table with some books on it just randomly in the middle of a field. But the scene is also really pretty and aesthetically pleasing; I think the image of the eclipse being reflected on the water and the silhouettes of the two men in the distance is beautiful.
My favorite artsy vignette of the video is at 2;18 it gives me the feeling of staring an oil paint, with the ground's texture, the foggy shade of mountains, the far but warm sun and finally the human silhouette that seems out of place, as if someone drew it with ink over the actual paint
My favourite artsy vignette of the song is Kai's dancing. I loved all the vignettes, but this one BLOWS MY MIND. His dancing is really soulful, he has a cool feeling in this, it's a gentle yet strong dance, and I loved it. I watched their teasers one by one, and I was really losing confidence because even if they are from SM this was really getting too long, but watching "What is love" and Kai's dancing made me believe in EXO's future!
"I lost my pants" is permanently etched on my mind so I came back to see why, it's been so long 🥲

my favourite artsy vignette is the whole damn video bc it's way better than anything I will ever film in my life. You have all the different settings that includes being inside AND OUTSIDE. WoW good job SM. Also, the special effects and symbols really give it the 'exo' feel bc they seem to be the only rookies doing that whole 'oh look at me i have powers' concept.
My favorite artsy vignette is definitely when Luhan looks through the eyeglass and then it zooms out. His cute hat and the way the camera is angled makes a very pleasing, simple, and calm scene.
I think my favorite artsy vignette was the theme of the eclipse. It brings all their separate storylines together as they get cast under the shade, and since in ancient cultures they believed that an eclipse was the end of the world, it fits well into the "i will love you to the end" theme of the song. Plus the image of the eclipse reflected in one of their eyes was just hauntingly beautiful like he was holding the world in his eyes and the girl he is singing about is his world.
I think that my favorite artsy vignette from the video was the barn/shed where they were singing in. It just had a real cool feel to that room. I loved how they backlit the actual set so that the light bled through the planks. I also liked how they strewn twigs and antlers all over the room. It had a very rustic feel to it, which was a very different feel to the rest of the music video in which they all felt like barren wastelands.
My favorite artsy vignette is when the three of them are just in the studio and Lay is dancing, Chen is just relaxing sitting back and sipping on his hoy choco, and the other one and playing with the dog it gives off a peaceful- relaxing feeling to the video
My favorite artsy vignette in the video would have to be the part where the eclipse comes out. I especially love how in one part when it is out you see the reflection of the eclipse and two members in the background staring up at it. I just love how the scene looked with kind of dark lighting coming from the eclipse it was amazing.
my favorite artsy vignette is when there's sehun and lu han around the fire, joking and laughing. So beautiful, and their smiles are so WOW!

My fav (in EXOK vid) is the part where Chanyeol finds the same sym in thebook&rock. The eerie lighting entering old/broken shack & the way the cam focuses on the book &rock when held side by side was rlly dramatic and cool
it's also cool that he found Lay's sym (member of EXOM) sorta like a glimpse of the other half of the "tree of life" then later Suho's symbol, the leader of EXOK like a preparation of these two sides fully colliding/meeting like in"MAMA" (prob why"Whatislove" is a prologue)
My favorite artsy vignette in this mv is when Lay dances, turns around' stares at the sun, and the camera zooms in on his eye. That whole scene had a really nice calm feel to it.
my favourite artsy vignette is chanyeol reading the maps in the sketchy shack. it ties things in with exo's concept and I like the attention to detail in the props.
omg I got emotional watching these old videos because this Exo made me fall in love with kpop and Simon and Martina were there to guide me through. I know you guys have to move on, but these vids bring back the new exciting feeling of finding kpop and I sure do miss the EYK era
My favorite artsy vignettes would be when sehun and luhan are talking by the campfire, it gives a very warm feeling as well as when Chen and Lay are in what seems to be a house and it both give of a very cozy and comfortable atmosphere. The campfire, Chen drinking a warm drink and lay with the puffy white dog are small details that improve the scenes. I also liked the eclipse, it seemed special in the sense of " wherever we are, we will always be together" in this case experiencing a phenomena.
My favorite artsy vignette in the video was the part where they zoom to Lay's eye. We get to see the reflection of the eclipse and i just love it. It's a good idea, rather than showing someone (i meant Chanyeol) looking directly to the eclipse and doesn't blind their eyes. But i also like the part where Suho & D.O see the eclipse. We can see the reflection of the eclipse on the water. I think it's just so cool.

My favorite artsy vignette is OMG THE WHOLE VIDEO IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING how can you make me choose !!!!!!!!!!!! I really love when the light hits Baekhyun and D.O when their singing and when luhan is looking thru the binoculars and especially when ChanYeol is looking up at the eclipse his face looked so ..the emotion ..ugh ! I would LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEEE to win !! Im such a huge fan
My favorite artsy vignette was when Suho and D.O. are standing across from each other near a source of water and you can see the eclipse's reflection. When I first saw this MV I was still getting used to all the members and the whole EXO concept, but I was SO amazed at the amount of nature I was looking at! Because I'm so used to seeing overly lit square rooms, I literally lost my mind when I saw that scene. There was real water!
My favourite artsy vignette was Luhan and Sehun's adventure parts. I especially like the first scene of them together which is somewhere at the 0:44 mark because the lyrics at that point says, "함께라면 어떨까" which means "What if we were together". That lyric kind of matches Luhan and Sehun's scene because they are together. In addition, the whole song's meaning is about discovering what love is, and in that scene, they are holding a map, which implies that they are wanting to discover something.
My favorite artsy vignette is Kris's scene where he is standing in a field (or outside of that house..I don't even know). It's my favorite scene because it looks like it could be an advertisement for a hippy commune or something similar. He is absorbing the sunlight..photosynthesizing. Also, I was once watching What Is Love in my photo class, and my teacher came up and asked me if Kris was a woman...
To say the least, it's a scene that holds many fond memories.
my favorite artsy vignette is when kai does his solo dance and then it goes split screen. It was so precise and it went really well with the music and the settings was really nice.
My favorite artsy vignette is right at the beginning, when Suho and D.O. look at each other in the middle of nowhere. I just think those two camera angles that show each of their faces are perfect. And their reflection in that little pond makes it seem like a dual picture.
My favorite "artsy vignette"is definitely when the camera is spinning around the 2 guys standing by the table (1 holding a kite) and they look at each other and the camera flips. I'm not sure why it's my fave but it's 4am here in El Paso, TX so my brains def not in full function mode. It's the most memorable scene in the vid for me though. I LOVE this song by the way! It was on your best songs of 2013 (so far) list and I was totally psyched!
my favorite artsy vignette is Chanyeol when he was searching for the old clue from the rocks that with wonderful sculpture in the rock. it was like so warm and you can imagine how he looking for the clues, and when he found it he smiles and that feel so good and peacefull
My favorite artsy vignette is when Chanyeol enters that kind of old abandoned shack and find's suho's water symbol and sorts of starts examines because to me that just gives viwers hints about what they were planning for mama later on. Also another of my favs was lay's dancing scene in front of the mirror because idk why but it just gave a smooth relaxing feeling to it. I really liked all those HunHan moments when Sehun and Luhan were traveling and working together. After re-watching this MV and MAMA, those moments really reflect the idea that one day, the two halves of the tree will become one again someday. Sehun and Luhan just looked like two friends who were just having fun and hanging out. Lol I especially liked the campfire scene when they were talking laughing around the fire...it reminds me of my old camping trips with friends. These scenes are really
Because the 'artsy vignettes' in What is Love are actually a compilation of their teasers, my favourite vignette was the one at about 50 seconds into the music video, where Kai is strutting in the middle of a road at night (Let out the Beast teaser). I discovered EXO through Taemin and Kai's friendship. Let out the Beast was the first of teaser that I saw, in which I thought to myself, "That guy looks soo much like Taemin!"
But the most ARTSY scene would defs be staring right into the eclipse^^
