A Finnish classic from the era, when lyrics told a story. Originally recorded by a singer, athlete and film actor Tapio Rautavaara in 1949. An Olympic gold medalist in javelin from 1948 London games. A very popular personality, actor and singer throughout the decades during his career. He recorded about 300 songs and wrote quite a few of the songs himself. "Päivänsäde ja Menninkäinen" was written by a singer-songwriter, musician and scriptwriter Reino Helismaa. He's credited for writing lyrics to around 1500 recorded songs and he's known especially for his humorous songs. If you're interested, here's a song by Tapio Rautavaara from 1951 performed in English by Delta Rhythm Boys in 1964: "The Delta Rhythm Boys - Grandpa's Strawhat". Delta Rhythm Boys performed in Europe and they resettled permanently here in 1956. They recorded Finnish songs also in Finnish and they were popular here. Here's couple other popular Finnish songs they recorded in English: "Raunchy Ropey", "Tundra Girl".and "Though You Left Me". If you're curious about how the songs sound in Finnish, here Tapio Rautavaara sings that "Raunchy Ropey": "Tapio Rautavaara - Rosvo-Roope". The song is originally from 1931 and known as "The Ballad of Roope the Robber". "Roope the Robber" was also filmed into a movie and it was the first Finnish movie shown on the Finnish TV: "Trailer: Rosvo Roope (1949)". A story about a sailor named Roope, who turned into a pirate and broke hearts wherever he went. The name role was played by Tauno Palo, one of the most popular Finnish movie stars of all times. He recorded the song several times. Here's how that "Päivänsäde ja Menninkäinen" Jarkko sang sounds in English: "Barbara Helsingius - The Sunbeam and the Troll"

My dad used to sing this to me every night when I was little. Now it just makes me cry to hear the song because I understand the lyrics better and because of the memories it holds. Such a beautiful song.

The lyrics in this song are so beautiful, just makes you cry, love and friendship that can never be between them. One of rhe most beloved songs in Finlan, it's originally a lullaby. Jarkko is the kind of singer that what ever he sings he get the spirit of the song.😊

My grandmother used to sing this to me when I was child. We are different, there are people like in this lullaby, those who like to live in the dark side.
and those who prefer bright lights. Thanks for your reacting and greets from Finland. Take care.

I feel like it gives better feel of this song you think instead of "fairy" "menninkäinen" to mean something more of a "Goblin". As a finnish person I would interpret the "last ray of the sun" as some sort of a entity of light and day, while "menninkäinen" is more shadowy creature of earth and night.

I have some opinions about the English translation (no shade to the one who did the subtitles for the video; translation is an art and much of what I'd have to say is nitpicking and differing artistic opinions more than anything else) but yeah this is a beautiful song!

Onf me favourite songs to sing in karaoke... Normal karaokeon is just way too fast based, this more close to classic Tapio Rautavaara version, but actually maybe even better (gasp!)

Jarkko Aholas' performance is bad in my honest opinion. It's too pompous and try hard.
