about 27 years ago or so, this album "Tocsin" use to be my absolute favorite album to put on while i sat around getting ready to go out to the club. just taking my time doing my hair and my makeup. there is nothing else that has the sound and atmosphere of this album.. hearing anything from it brings back so many memories of being young and thin and beautiful and feeling like some kind of star or something, standing in the dark smokey club.
sadly the scene where i was was so small the preparation for going out was often better than the actual clubbing that night. i would just casually take my sweet time and draw it out and make getting made up an event on its own, i probably spent around 3 hours on average getting ready. taking a shower and shaving, then i would put whatever pants i was going to wear on and just walk around the house barefoot and shirtless listening to this album while my hair dried. back then i was 6'5" and weighed 140 lbs, i had a 30 inch waist i was so skinny and lean. as a kid i was made fun of for how skinny and tall i was but from my med teens through my twenties i loved it and fully enjoyed it while i could. sometimes friends would come over and hang out while i got ready and sometimes i would meet up with everybody at someone elses house after i got made up before we went out, but either way really it was mostly just waiting for it to get dark because especially in the summer where i am it will still be completely light out till like 9:30 and no one is there anyway till 11 or later. so just walking around in my pants playing Tocsin and joking around with a few friends then i would put my shirt on but just around my neck and leave the rest hanging down my back like a cape or something while i did my hair. then i did my makeup last and slipped my arms through my shirt and my friends would touch up their makeup too and we wee off into the night to go clubbing.
Man Anja is full on German Expressionism mode(moving around weird with arms, stretching face etc.) while she is singing... also she looks like the actress from Metropolis(German Sci-Fi Film which inspirade Star Wars and Blade Runner). Anja is cool.
When I first heard this band back in the 80s (Mondlicht I think it was) I thought they were the scariest thing I'd ever heard. I never really knew what they looked like, but I imagined pasty-faced zombies with eyes rolled back into their heads. What a surprise to find them so vibrant and beautiful -- and almost normal! The drummer almost looks like he walked out of an 80s family sitcom. It's still wonderfully surreal music.

I find it hard to believe that Anja Huwe (Xmal Deutschland) had never heard of Siouxsie and the Banshees like she claimed whereas she knew the music of The Cure, Joy Division, Cocteau Twins etc and was in the New Wave/Punk scene since 1977. Off course she got tired of the comparisons or even the nickname 'the German Siouxsie'. I don't think Xmal sounded like Siouxsie but they were both great bands.
Something about bands that are succesful in Germany having a hard time abroad, and vice versa (Xmal being the latter). "What do the Brits like about you?" A: "We don't know exactly"...Actually it's the usual music journalist bullshit questions about markets and record companies, and the band obviously doesn't give a shit! What an asshole.

I saw them Tocsin tour in LA 84' at the Palace , Flew out w/ my friend Bob Brady from Phoenix,my GF at the time lived in LA, so we made a last minute decision to go.He had the Album and we thought Anja was hot as shit that night and did all these moves and looks and stare. My friend and I just kept looking at each other during the show and laughing because they were Great and again she was so Beautiful and a Trip!

Ya' know what? I don't care that they're obviously miming to a playback - it's still one of the best f**kin tunes they did. The expressive combination of Anja's teutonic howling, set against Manuela Rickers's grindingly distinctive guitar, the heavily flanged bass and the tight drums just make this possibly one of the best tracks Xmal ever put down. Saw them live at the T&C, London back in '85 - God, I miss those days sometimes.
