    Nice to see someone make a very gallant attempt at such a job (and to succeed without the proper tooling). I am an engineer myself, and it's really good to see someone who does not profess such skills, but is willing to have a really good go at tackling such a job and to finally succeed. The nice part is that you & your missis did it together and really shared some quality time "ACE". Also, it's so nice to see a "young un" like you taking an interest in practical skills, and with a healthy sense of humour, keep it up lad.Good on yer Kid, from an old godger in Wales UK.

    You two are THE BEST! Love the video and can certainly appreciate and relate to the frustrations. With that I have to say I was smiling and even compassionately chuckling along the way. Your valiant effort to cut the hole in the plywood without a jigsaw or spare Dremel bits had me rolling and saying -- "that'd me". And Nikki, the comments are tremendous. Thanks guys for all of the great videos and for showing us how much fun full-timing can be -- even when installing a composting toilet. :-)

    Absolutely love your videos! This video was great because it shows an installation by someone who is like most of us, just able enough to attempt (and finally complete) something of this nature. You were brave to attempt it, and get kudos for completing it all by yourself! I would've been lazy and hired a pro. Anxious to see how you like it!

    Rich we are considering adding a small pipe that will allow grey water to overflow into the black. Seems like an easy thing to do, and will greatly increase our Wild Camping. I'm thinking we'll need to install a shutoff valve so that the future owner can "turn off" this option.

  • @gonewiththewynns
    @gonewiththewynns  11 лет назад

    I did a several fill and dumps using the spray nozzle built into our black tank. I also left some water in there and some of the heavy duty tank cleaner and deodorizer which I've dumped and replaced a few times now. My plan is to always keep a little water in there so it doesn't warp or begin cracking, etc. after long periods of "unuse'.

    I love your optimism, and your honesty. As for the armchair know-it-all's, I'm a professional and I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've finished a task only to have one of the guys walk up and say "Well, if you'd have done it like this..." My solution to this is to simply give those guys that task the next time it comes up. I tend to fire them a few times first, just because, but they have clearly earned the right to perform those tasks for all future events. I'm thinking that when you put the one in the other side of your cat, one of the "armchair know-it-all's" can assist you with that because it's guaranteed to be a pleasant task.

    I've told MANY rv people to do the compost toilet.It will save sooo much water.You can connect the grey water and black water tanks for longer boon docking.You can dump the grey water for free in a bush or field.
    NOW you have lot's of dish water and shower water or hand washing.No more paying 10 bucks to get to a dump station so this will save a ton of money over the year.

    Wow great vid ! Add some commercials and you've got the making of a tv show . You can call it " R V Renos " ! Just wondering ... Instead of making big floor , why not make it big enough just to fit the new toilet. Use the flange bolts to hole it. This way you won't mess up the tiles, and it's easy in easy out! Just for thought . Oh by the way I own a renovations company!!!

    I've been comparing the Nature's Head with a competitor. They both offer solar vents but the design of the other one let's you remove the liquid bottle without exposing the #2 container. Has that been an issue for you with this toilet?

    • @gonewiththewynns
      @gonewiththewynns  10 лет назад +1

      The thing I find funny with the competitor is he claims "you have to get a whiff of the #2 when emptying the liquids"...yet they claim the #2 chamber doesn't smell?!? For me it's a moot point and opening the chamber a couple inches to remove the liquids does not smell. I'd say save the money and go for the Nature's Head. the wiring you have run to the 12v solenoid would be wrong on most RVs
    as the newer solenoids us 12v + - too turn on and - + to turn the system off
    you have power at all times so you are ok on yours
    the gasket in the black take is what was making it so hard to pull out it well come out but then you have a 3in open hold in the tank that you cant get to on your rv
    but your having fun doing it and thats all the matters

    You might want to consider the many friends you have made over the years and seek them out when you are in their neck of the woods. I am sure most would lend a hand to help you with just about anything. FYI- everything you needed for this install is in my garage, minus the toilet.

    Jason, I have to give you an A+ for perseverance! However, have you ever looked at the "Sewer Solution"? There is a video on you-tube and Camping World sells these. You have to look for them, but they have them. It is a macerator without the gears! Works off water pressure and uses a 3/4 inch hose. No muss no fuss! Check it out. We used one for 6 years on the road and could have sold one to every RVer who was parked next to us. Once you see it work, you would throw that stinking sewer hose away. Oh, and hook up, about 30 seconds from opening up the bay to hooking up to sewer dump.After being out of full timing for 10 years, we are getting ready to purchase a Class C and take our life long trip to Alaska. Need something a little smaller than what we had before, to get off the beaten paths. Love your videos. Brings back many memories!

    Didn't you say you would do a "update" on how the composting was working ? How much longer ? thanks

  • @DavidStegmeir
    @DavidStegmeir 11 лет назад

    I like your can do attitude. I would make a friendly suggestion to plan ahead and gather all the tools and materials you need. This would have saved you hours of work and grief. Did you do this just to control odors? There is a $60 dollar fix to handle that called xtreme vent. It completely gets rid of the odor and you do not even have to add chemicals at all. It is about a 30 minute install(if you have the right tools :) ) You can google it. Happy RVing.

    What if you only use the toilet part time? Should you empty it after a few uses instead of leaving it to compost till the next time you use it? Would you need to leave the fan running if not using the toilet for a spell?

    • @gonewiththewynns
      @gonewiththewynns  8 лет назад

      +Dale Schultz Actually, time away is even better as it allow everything to compost! It's all about the amount of uses (about 80 uses in the solids chamber) and then you would change it out. Time is your friend in this instance, not your enemy. The fan should be left running but it is just a tiny little fan that draws a very minimal amount of power. One tiny solar panel can keep it running all the time.

    • @DarkEnergyStudios
      @DarkEnergyStudios 8 лет назад

      the separation is the most important part. You can read more here: www.gonewiththewynns.com/composting-toilet we do have a few followup videos we're working on now.

    I do ALOT of wiring and electrical on boats (which is identical to wiring rvs.) You should never use wire nuts or caps on any vehicle. you should but connectors with a crimper not pliers. Or twist the ends together end to end not side by side. (tried to post pic but wouldn't let me) if your not going to solder then strip the ends longer then do more twists the tape the well or use adhesive heat shrink (best). Love your vids though. Are you guys still going to buy a sailboat?

    I LOVED this video! And then when I went to comment noticed it is 5 yrs old. Carol Burnett and I Love Lucy shows are still funny too (right, you are really young, do you know who they are?)

    Dude, I like you! haha... normally I would say people that do the kind of work you did are idiots, or the way you use the TOTALLY wrong tools for the application. But your casual patient approach, and your stellar attitude actually justifies all you did, so it's cool. And good thing you've got money to burn. I'm a Building Contractor myself.

    I have heard that composting toilets cannot accept TP. Is that true? That seems like a shortcoming.

    So what happens with the hose that fed water into the old toilet?? Does water not come out when the water pump comes on? I just took our toilet out of our travel trailer.. we aren't hooked up to water or have any water in it yet but the wife said... "what happens if we turn on the water pump, won't water come out there"... and I had an oh crap moment... lol

      USA4US it's a great option for the eco-friendly or the RV'er or Boater who doesn't want to deal with emptying a black tank on a regular basis. you'll find the scoop on our 2 posts about it on our website in the RV section:
