For a video about pithy quotes, it has one of the most quotable quotes I've heard in a while: "I kind of feel like my whole adult life has been a series of circumstances that force me to reckon seriously with stuff I once easily dismissed." Put that on a pillow.

I once heard a farmer say : "That which doesn't kill you will make you stronger is a lie. That which doesn't kill you will make you hate it and you will work your ass off to never be in that situation again. Which is why, on my fence that now is around my pasture has 5000 VOLTS ON EVERY SINGLE WIRE! " That dude was on a journey.

I've found that I'm a much happier and less resentful person after learning to not disdain things I don't necessarily care for or experience. If it makes other people happy and it isn't harmful, I see no reason to act as if distancing myself from it makes me superior or more enlightened.

And I had to understand that all the high school kids who always critized other peoples' interests had no superior knowledge, taste or understand because even if their criticism was somewhat valid there was no other point in voicing that criticism then to create a sense of superiority and that it was okay to like the things I liked (feel less intimitated by other people and also less attacked when somebody voiced their opinion but also not to express senseless criticism myself - still learning)

Some relative of mine once said "Never give 100%, just in case you need to do an encore." It doesn't apply to everything, but it is definitely applicable to playing music with a brass instrument, which I think was all they were actually referring to. Nobody will notice if you're playing at 90%, but they will notice if you aren't playing at all because your lips are toast.

Good job running 9 miles! I accidentally ran 10 the other day. Was going for 4 but got lost. It took forever, but hey, I could actually do it!
I used to not exercise at all, but have, like you, found that both my brain (including my mental health) is so much better for it. Nowadays, I find that running is one of the things that keeps me afloat in bad times.
Turns out that exercise, especially cardio, is not just about the short term endorphins, but regular exercise actually changes your brain in permanent ways.

As I've gotten older I too have found the need to occasionally eat the words of my younger self. This is both humbling yet refreshing. Its the reminder I often need to look more deeply into things I had once dismissed as simple as well as the giving me the enjoyment of looking up and discovering a horizon far away that I had never noticed before. Its the realization that I still have so much to learn.

I had a similar experience with music! The more popular it was, the more I believed that I was sophisticated to dismiss it as trash music. Once I allowed myself to realize that this is not actually true, I learned to enjoy it, and by doing so made my life easier and happier. I realized that by rolling my eyes and talking distastefully about pop music I was just causing anguish to myself and others. I was suffering at parties and weddings because I bitterly hated the style and volume of the music playing, and shared my frustration and discomfort with whoever would sympathize. I loathed these kind of parties for this reason. At some point, I learned that there's nothing inherently wrong with simple, repetitive, electronic songs, and my life got better in some ways. I began enjoying the parties. I realized for the first time that I actually enjoy dancing to music. I became less angry. I realized that before I had been stubborn and cocky, and without good reason.
Sometimes it can make a real difference to accept these supposed silly quotes and popular music and following celebrity lives, instead of fighting it for the wrong reasons.

Me too. I banned pop music from my life for about six months before finding myself subconsciously humming along to it in my car, and judging myself for it! I didn't start listening to more popular music again until I attended a live show of one of my favourite youtubers, Robertidk, where we listened to some alternative rock AND some of The Weeknd's music, and I realized that I was enjoying both. It reminded me of the concept of dialectics, I guess I forgot hat I can like more than one type of music.

Same here. I used to turn my nose up at "electronic computer-generated" music, but fast forward a few years and I'm glad I've changed my mind. I still enjoy my old music, but I had no idea how much I would love Daft Punk if I really gave them a chance.
I don't know this as a fact, but I would imagine that people have scoffed at every up and coming instrument or genre of music over the centuries. There might have been people who looked at electric guitars as "not real guitars." And over the past ten years, people have been realizing that synthesizers, auto tune, and digital audio workstations are perfectly fine tools for making music, and the type of tools you use don't determine the actual quality or creativity. If anything, they've made a great contribution, and have made many new things possible.

    • @aarone377
      @aarone377 7 лет назад +4

I don't mind most genres of music but I know why I like some more than others. Originality and complexity are things I look for in music. Pop doesn't tend to be original or complex. There are exceptions and I do like some of the less complex music because it has a catchy tune but I can only listen to so much of it before it becomes repetitive and boring.

Nuance and balance. It's all about that in life. Nuance and balance. Even as a 19 year old barely-out-of-the-crib dude I often find myself wondering about why I tend to have an initiate reaction to something, only to find later on that, indeed, a lot of things are far more complex than I first thought they were.

I used to be obese until about 5 years ago, and I first picked up a barbell a little over 3 years ago now. I only need two 'motivational' quotes to remind myself why I lift heavy weights in the gym:
"Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor."
    ~Alexis Carrel
“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
    ~Eleanor Roosevelt
When I hit my goals of 600lb deadlift, 500lb squat, 350lb bench and body weight over head press I'm getting the latter quote along with a barbell tattooed across by upper back.

"The best way out is always through." That has got me through some weird shit, like exams, and long bike rides, and taking meds, and money issues, and dentist appointments, and the death of my childhood dog. And it's true, because time goes foward (as far as we know), so we have to move fowards. That doesn't mean always sticking to the same path, but continuing the journey.
Another one that I love is from Martin Fierro and it more or less says "Opportunity is like iron, you have to strike it while it's hot". And that has led me to some incredible experiences that I've would've missed if I had taken to much time to think about it.

I went through the same type of hate/love *journey* with pop/rock songs about romance. Used to be that I found them incredibly shallow, and full of platitudes about an idea that doesn't actually exist. Then I actually fell in love, and they started to make a deeper sort of sense.

    • @jonathanplatt5027
      @jonathanplatt5027 7 лет назад +2

Hmm, this got me on kindof an odd train of thought...
I think one of the reasons people hang on to motivational quotes is that they often express an emotion or idea that we ourselves don't feel capable of articulating. Then when we are in a place where we understand the idea, the quotes/songs/soundbites make sense, and we repeat them, hoping to share our understanding with others. Unfortunately, if they don't already understand the concept, they may find the saying trite, false, or simply not worth thinking about.
Long story short--I think this is one of the problems with political discourse in our country. Candidate A preaches a point from their podium, which galvanizes their constituents, and which the other side ridicules as banal, wrong-minded, whatever. Then Candidate B presents their side, and A and their supporters have a similar reaction. Until we can truly try to empathize with others' situations, we aren't going to understand their motivations, but instead will call them 'racist,' 'socialist,' or whatever other title is our narrow-minded view of why they act the way they do.
tl;dr - Walk a mile or two in each others' moccasins. Then instead of dismissing what they're saying, it'll resonate with you, too.

There are quite a few things John said in this video I disagree with, mainly regarding the quotes he said were not true.
The quote about conquering ourselves instead of the mountain makes perfect sense to me, and I think it's quite brilliant.
The ultimate goal of a mountain climber (I'm talking not only about people who climb physical mountains, but also metaphorically, referring to any kind of goal that implies a journey) is to conquer themselves. It just happens that climbing a physical mountain is just a much better way to conquer yourself, by overcoming your flaws and improving who you are, rather than something as ethereal as meditate.
I'ts always better to have a goal you have to act uppon on the physical world, because by doing that you will be forced to direct your whole mindset towards that goal. And all the obstacles and challenges you will face, you will only be able to go pass them by conquering yourself on the inside, because all obstacles, ultimately, come from the inside, not the outside.
Also, about things that are worth having coming easily, yes, they may come easy, but valuable things do not. A banana is worth having but it isn't valuable, because valuable things, physical or not, are, at least in part, valuable because they are hard to get, not only because of their own caracteristics. For example Ferraris are valuable objects because of their superior capabilities, but if having acces to one was easy, it wouldn't be as valuable. That car has a different value for a rich person than it has for regular people, and it has a different value for someone who worked realy hard to get it, than for someone who got it as a present from his rich parents. I'm not talking about the price, but how much it means to you, because value is personal. Yeah, a banana may be 50 cents, but it would mean the world to you if you were lost in the desert, instead of getting it easily from Wallmart.
Also, and maybe more important, I very much doubt that an unremarkable life may be fullfilling and meaningfull. But that is because I don't think that the common parameters people use to determine whether something is remarkable are the right ones to use. I think that, whether something is remarkable or not, should be determined by what and how many things someone had to defeat about himself in order to get what he or she wants to get, not about the thing that the person got. The goal itself is not as important as how hard it is for you to attain it, and what things about yourself you have to overcome in order to get it, and how much you evolve in the process.
For example getting to college may be easy for some people, most I would say (In USA at least) so that goal wouldn't be considered remarkable, that may not even be a considered a goal. But for some people that's extremely remarkable, because of all the things that they have to overcome just to get there. It's not about the goal, its about the person.
And I think that wraps up pretty much all this comment. Whether something is valuable or not it depends on the person, because it will be harder or easier to get for different people, and what will make things easy or hard for you personally is within you. So that's why it's important to have a goal that is difficult for you to achieve, because then you will have to face your own demons, which is the only way to grow. And that's the right parameter to determine whether a life is remarkable or not, Did you ever stand up to your demons, fought them and walked victorius out of the ring?

I have three posters on my wall. One is John's "The Test" quote, which I've loved for years and have placed so it's the first thing I see every morning. I think I love it because it's not exactly motivational, and instead a reminder of the simultaneous shortness and longness of life and how much bigger our lives are than simply what we know and have experienced.

Mostly due to the sociology course I'm taking, I find myself skeptical of motivational quotes and such. In Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Bright-Sided" she talks about how the trend toward individual optimism can lead to people on the whole blaming individuals for not trying hard enough to succeed instead of questioning the deficits those individuals may face because of societal injustices.
Of course, this is not to downplay those individuals that do find meaning in optimistic phrases and their successes, but I also worry about the kind of culture this rugged, individualism and optimism means for people who don't have the resources they need to reach that kind of success.

I've never really found any motivation in quotes; usually my motivation is internal. Personal experiences; helping family and friends; or just doing something for myself are the factors that usually drive me. However, as we get older and personal experiences change, so do our motivational factors. Maybe one day I'll be like you John and find motivation in those cliched quotes too.

I born and grew up in Iraq and it was a big deal for a girl to have a walk outside by herself. but I did it and I was taking a walk every single day to school then to college then to work just never looked at any body.once in the summer break my mom was sitting in the front yard waiting for me to tell me your dad is in the living room get in form the other door coz you came late after 10pm I told her it is not me to hide or lie I was just walking and that is what makes my dad happy and I got in to the living room and told him I came late coz I liked the breeze he said good for you. you are just like me I love to walk a lot and it is OK to come after the sunset coz lights and the trust I gave you and everyone has to try taking a walk all day long all the time just to see what time is your own body can make it better.

Well my favourite quote is "well-read people are less likely to be evil", written by Lemony Snicket but that only motivates me to read more and to read non-fiction. I've always liked those pretty foiled prints that people have with quotes on them but I could never find one I liked. Until I found one that said "You can do it Bruce" from Matilda and I thought that's one I can relate to.

It has put me in a mental state of not feeling bothered by jumping on the treadmill to walk, or perhaps to lay out my yoga mat for stretching. Thirty minutes is definitely better than an hour a day, as sometimes I can't even afford that. Thirty minutes is definitely doable.

_Motivation_, broadly speaking, operates on the erroneous assumption that a particular mental or emotional state is necessary to complete a task.
_Discipline_, by contrast, separates outwards functioning from moods and feelings and thereby ironically circumvents the problem by consistently improving them.
As stupid as it sounds even to me, maybe sometimes one just has to put it on their calendar/schedule and stop thinking until the task is done. Like brushing your teeth - that mostly becomes a thoughtless habit. :D

Physical fitness (staying active and eating healthy) is a lifelong journey that is not only good for your body but also your mind and your spirit (if you believe in that sort of thing). I just recently started this "journey" and realized that it's just about taking care of yourself: something you have to do forever. So you might as well do a good job, forgive yourself for setbacks, and keep moving forward. I am unsurprised that Google's algorithms lead me to this video, given what I've been doing lately. Btw, Disney's "keep moving forward" quote is a solid one for a cardio mantra, at least.

My favorite counter-intuitive motivational quote is "I want to hurt the most", which despite seemingly reinforcing self-harm is actually one of the most helpful pieces of advice I've ever been given. In the context of physical fitness, motivational quotes often encourage you to be the best or to get first place, but there's a problem: pain. You end up having to convince yourself that the pain is worth it. However, if you strive for pain in the first place, winning is your only option (besides self-harm, which is not the intent of the quote).
It's no longer "it's worth it", it's "I'm accomplishing it".

    - Running is nothing more than an ongoing debate between the part of your brain that wants to stop, and the part that wants to keep going.
    - Go as long as you can, and then take another step.
    - Your body can stand almost anything, it's your mind that you have to convince.
    - Your legs are not giving out. Your head is giving up. Keep going.
    - Physical strength will get you to the start line, but mental strength will push you to the finish line.
    - The real workout starts when you want to stop.
    - If you never try, you'll never know.
    - Sore? Tired? Out of breath? Sweaty? Good, it's working.
    - A year from now, you will thank yourself for starting today.
    - No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch.
    - Some quit due to slow progress, never realizing that slow progress... is progress.
I used all these quotes to keep me going when I did the Couch to 5K program :)

Honestly, motivational quotes don't get me to do anything, but they keep me going whenever I do something, it's like a little cheer in the background. You don't need motivation to get started, one day your fear of failure and rejection will be overshadowed by your fear of not trying anything at all. Remember that you're gonna turn 90 in the future and look back on your life so try not to do anything that elder you will regret, bc regret hurts more than anything when you're about to die. You don't even have to dream big, simply strive to lead a healthy life and rock a healthy mind. PMA

My English teacher has a bunch of random motivational quotes in the classroom that just don't make sense. My favorite one is "Life is like TETRIS, we all know how it works: you fit in, you disappear." Another good one is "You can be on the right track, but if you don't move, you get run over". They're both written by Anonymous, which implies that she's either an anarchist or that she wrote the quotes. I think the former makes the most sense because she has demonstrated that she knows not to end a sentence with a preposition.

The thing about motivational quotes is that, as someone who's nowhere near where I want to be in life, I often find them incredibly insulting. In playing up the role of character in success, they often end up saying or implying that those who fail are thus necessarily of poor character.
But a lot of success is about luck. The luck of not suffering from crippling chronic depression, for example.
That bit about staying ready, though it's cheesy, has the advantage over many others of actually being true. A sustained state of preparation is often possible and it's not a bad idea if you need to be ready quickly.

Motivational quotes are good for one thing, short motivational highs, in my book. If you want inner motivation that last longer you'll need to look elsewhere, whether it is tracking your progress or learning more about what you are doing, making your routine more efficient in order to get results. Result are the pinnacle of motivation, whether it is beating your siblings or getting stronger and the better results you get the more motivated you are.

I feel that John is foreshadowing the publication of at least one self-help book with this video...

I have recently been finding the same thing with working out. I am a self-employed Website designer. So self-motivation is constantly in need. A little over 3 months ago I started swimming every day for an hour. Taking care of my physical needs has greatly stimulated my productivity in every other aspect of my life. Swimming also gives time to think and reflect, while also falling into a rhythm and being meditative. Are you working on a new book?
