This reminds me of something I would like to confess: ~15 years ago, a house I bought contained some old notebooks from the 90's tucked away in the attic. They were journals written by a young woman struggling with weight, depression, and mental illness. At first I ignored them, but my curiosity got the better of me and eventually I read a couple of them. Man, those journals really allowed me to see through the eyes of someone else struggling with life, and it changed my whole perspective. I was mainly surprised how much I could relate to some of her entries even though I never went through most of her struggles. They were kinda life changing for me.
Honestly, I still feel guilty having read them, but I gained more empathy from those notebooks than anything before. I never found out who the woman was, but I think about her often, and hope she is doing better today.

The other day I was really happy and I said out loud "I'm really happy right now!!" and it felt so GOOD. It made me even happier to realize I was having a moment of happiness. The next day was a very stressful one but I was able to remember that the day before I'd been happy, partly because I'd exclaimed it and thus made it more concrete, and that my life wasn't all grey and gloom. Marion! Today is the first day of school in my neighborhood, and for the first time in 13 years I didn't take a picture of my baby outside the front door in her first-day outfit -- because she's away at college now. I didn't cry during John's video but I'm crying now remembering the sweet suffering of those years of early childhood/motherhood, the moments of absurd joy watching my child discover her fingers, the moments of (s)heroism when she needed something and I realized *I* was the one who was going to figure it out and deliver, the moments of isolation and confusion and grief when I saw friends announce they'd gotten new jobs or landed book deals and I was like "I made lasagna last night, and it felt like a really big win," and I catch the scent of that on the breeze of your post and I just want to say hell yes Marion you matter, and motherhood matters, and that lost feeling means you exist and persist and that your story matters and also you have first days of school to look forward to and let me tell you they are AWESOME.

May I also add 2 bonus floss reasons... The plaque on teeth in ill hearts and the brains of Alzheimer's patients is basically the same stuff. This is what got me flossing, may it help you too.😁

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk 2 года назад +13

@@3countylaugh Sorry to be "that guy", but there's a slight correction to be made. It's true that mouth/teeth health seems important for heart health, and by extension brain health, but it's not because of any connection between tooth plaque and Alzheimer's plaque. The plaques that contribute to Alzheimer's are made of amyloid beta and tau proteins; the plaque on your teeth is made of food particles (mostly sugars and food protein), saliva, and bacteria. They're only both called "plaques" because they're abnormal deposits that grow over time.
Dental health is important to overall health, especially heart health, because gum disease can weaken the gum tissue and make it easier for infections to get into your bloodstream. It's not about plaque; although if you have gum disease, the bacteria in the dental plaque can enter your system that way as well.

I would love to see someone contradict me, but I did some searching a while ago and couldn't find a convincing study about the efficacy of flossing when combined with brushing. My conclusion was it's just one of those things that seems like it should work but isn't actually that useful. I only floss when I feel like something is stuck in between a tooth and otherwise just rely on the dentist.

    • @larissapienaar2436

@@NinjaPtatoe I do find quite a lot of food particles between my teeth that the toothbrush doesn’t reach but don’t actually feel like something is stuck there. It also helps remove bits of hard tartar buildup which a toothbrush does not do.

Another note about memoirs: Even if you think other people won't care, do it for yourself. Writing about oneself may seem kind of self absorbed, but I have found it to be the most effective form of therapy for me. Last year for Camp NaNoWriMo, my writing project was 50,000 words of memoir. It was so much easier for me to spew out this much about me than it ever was to write a fictional story, and it was so cathartic. If you don't know where or how to start, just find a list of prompts and answer the questions as if you were interviewing yourself. You'll learn a lot about yourself.

That advice about memoirs is great! I'm currently writing my Masters dissertation on the rhetoric of women in Ptolemaic petitions. They are such fascinating snapshots into the lives of relatively normal women who happened to live over 2000 years ago. I wish I could know more about them like how badly scolded was Philista when Petechon poured hot water on her on the 28th of December 220BCE, what was she like as a person she comes across as a very forceful woman. I wonder about poor Nikaia who out lived both her husband and her son in 218BCE and was worried about being protected in her old age, I hope her brother in law was able to help. I hope Senchons was able to get her donkey back in time to move the bee hives to the pastures. I've seen such tiny snapshots of their lives and I so wish I could see more

"I mean what the heck is even happening right now?" Haha. Same. But seriously, when you said every life is worth note... I started to cry. I know without a doubt I'm not the only one watching this who has to fight against demons of great strength every day who tell me the opposite of what you're saying. I'm not the only one who's every moment is a fight for my life. When strangers on the internet say to audiences of hundreds or thousands, "you matter, I love you, you're smart/special/doing a great job", I always roll my eyes. You don't know us, I think. But John and Hank have been with me since I was a tender teen, and hearing it from John is different, and no it isn't going to save my life but it's a little push in the back as I stumble along.

A couple years ago I moved back across the country, to the smallest town I've ever lived in, in a different part of the state that I grew up in (Minnesota). It's been really lovely being back, the town is small enough that it's not that suffocating middle range where conformity is placed above all else, and I'm getting to have a new phase of relationship with my dad and one of my aunts. I've been trying to notice moments when things are particularly good, like a get-together with people, or weather that I enjoy, and just capture the glow of it for later. This won't last, the weather and climate will change, more people will move to the Great Lakes area, I will outlive people, and I want bottled memories to revisit later (in the literal winter when I wish for a lovely autumn day, in the figurative winter when miss my grandparents, parents, aunts & uncles, etc).

I just turned 24; this video was really helpful. The pandemic was really hard on me. I was entering college (after spending a couple years on a religious mission) and suddenly everything was upside-down. I learned that I was gay, that God was okay with me being gay, and that I probably shouldn't go back to my religious college. Being stubborn, I returned to my religious college in 2021 only to be miserable for several months and have to drop out. Over the last year and a half, I have gone to a lot of therapy and struggled to hold down a job. I have also gained a lot of weight. Then I turned 24 and suddenly I was thinking about all the things my parents had done by the time they turned 24, how it was taking me longer than I ever imagined to complete school, and how even if I were to graduate soon I have no idea what's next. But I also realized that I am doing better than I have in years and I have felt ready to go back to school. I met with an academic advisor who said that I could graduate after two semesters. Then Biden announced that he would forgive up to $10,000 for most student loan borrowers. While I might still have to take out student loans to complete my bachelor's degree, I am very grateful that the $8,000 that I took out while attending my former school will be forgiven. I will be able to start my new college with a fresh start!
Long story short, I appreciate the idea that everyone is worth remembering and that even the small victories are worth celebrating.

God I need to hear more things like this right now, and probably always. I'm 30 rather than 25, but in the last 20 years I've had a lot of bad things happen to me. Not the worst things in world, but enough trauma that it put me in therapy and on medications. I'm trying to emerge into myself, make some kind of mark and catch up with a culture that often feels both totally unappealing and alienating and also the only game in town. Fortunately some light has existed, and one of the consistent sources have been Hank and John Green in various guises and roles, from teachers to fellow writer and scientist, and generally being human. I am beyond moved. You talking about caring for “future you” by flossing reminded of your Perspective video where you say, “You can’t know what an experience will mean to future you until you are future you.” That video brought me such peace and solace when I was in college, feeling internally chaotic constantly. I memorized it from watching it so much, and I turn to it when everything feels… unmanageable.
This new video brought up the “me” who watched Perspective in 2013, in a sad nostalgic way. I now work in mental health services, treating patients with similar existential anxiety and suicidal thoughts. But I immediately felt soothed. To say we are a necessary presence on this planet… what a powerful statement. This video moved me in a way that I’ll definitely process in therapy this week. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for these videos.

I have kept journals for years and have wondered whether to keep them or not. Your idea of writing a memoir is a good way to bridge that. A great project as I continue to go through cancer treatment. I have been shown how many people care for me, so I know some people would want to know how I lived.
ETA that the idea of always being prepared to celebrate is the answer to the question I've been looking for as I've been struggling through chemo - how to find joy in the everyday? Maybe it's as simple as celebrating getting through the day and making a big deal of it.
