I know you guys are upset about the timing of the tournament. But as an Australian this is one of the few times it was played at a reasonable hour to be able to watch
I would have loved to have seen a few minutes of this podcast dedicated to the recent thrilling finish at the RBC Canadian Open one week before the US open, where Canadian Nick Taylor broke an almost 70 year drought of Canadians not winning their national open. A 4 hole playoff with Taylor draining a 72 foot putt to defeat Rick's homey Tommy Fleetwood (who played with great determination) and the bedlam that ensued. The atmosphere was described as Ryder Cup-esque. If Rick touched on this earlier or in a previous podcast, my apologies, I must have missed it.
"Well first off, congratulations!" That one little comment is so Rick Shiels. He could have just dived into the answer, but he took a second to give a stranger asking a question a sweet compliment.
I love the idea of Mulligans and I do think it would help my score. I would mostly use mulligans on tee shots where I lost the ball out of bounds. This would effectively save me 2 strokes rather than just the 1 for handicap. The difference is re-teeing 2 and hitting 3 compared to reteeing 1 with a mulligan.
I think Top Meadow in Essex is a great example of a welcoming golf club that appears to have a great business. I am not a member but can usually get a round per week. Usual price £19.50 which includes breakfast. Onsite are two function rooms a small hotel and a very popular restaurant. And the course is great, please come and play break 75
Lol. I loved how late in the day the golf was for us in the US… now you get to experience our pain when we watch The Open, any international soccer, formula almost every race!
Father's day is the same; Mother's day are different in UK and USA...loved the course except a 59 yard wide final fairway and he hit a 55 yard slice sorry power fade...we're seeing the same timing issue with the Open..used to be done by 11 am EST...now it's basically on late afternoon to get a bigger US audience and attract all those early morning golfers.
Rick, with RUclips golf being so huge and lots of creators getting deals with big brands for clubs (Foreplay & Taylormade, BobDoesSports & Callaway, GoodGood & Callaway, etc) why doesn’t the BIGGEST golf RUclipsr have a deal? Would love to see Rick Shiels x Taylormade or Rick Shiels x Titlest Maybe it’s been offered and you declined- love everything you do Rick!!
I was really rooting for Rickie. In regards to the glasses, I wear, and have done for years, the Prism lenses. Granted his are prescription, that lens coating doesn't filter out as much light as you'd think. I wear sunglasses in nearly every round but I find if I start in them, its hard to make the adjustment during the round without them. Well done to Wyndham. Brave effort.
I shot 86 yesterday with 9 pars and 2 birdies. Completely agree that mulligans would benefit those of us who are partial to a blow-up hole. 3 triple bogeys in the end for me after having to reload on two different tee boxes
👌 MULLIGANS 👌 So after listening to the podcast yesterday I got the lads out for a game of MULLIGANS last night and it was a cracker! Rules were as follows - 1. Your handicap is equal to the same amount of mulligans you're allowed per round and the competition is stroke play. 2. Only one mulligan can be used per shot but you can use multiple per hole. 3. Once a mulligan is taken, your first ball is dead and you have to use the mulligan shot. 4. Whatever mulligans you have left at the end of the round comes off your stroke score. So if you were 2 over and had 3 mulligans left your score is 1 under. Great craic and very tactical 👍
I would absolutely benefit from the mulligan v handicap method…I’m a 10 HCP. I’ve had both hips replaced, so once in a while the body doesn’t fire in the correct order on a drive and I will absolutely blow about 3 off the planet per round, sometimes fewer, sometimes more…and then my putting handicap is about a 30….so, I would easily pick up 3-4 strokes by re-teeing, and then I’d pick up a few on the greens…I love it!!
Hi Rick and guy great as always you mentioned it was going dark what if it was a play off , us opens play 18 holes the next day I think just remember tigers 2008 against Rocco when the play off went to a Monday, can both of you try to break 75 at Huyton and prescot , houghwood or even haydock park if you get the chance ? Thanks keep up the show and looking forward to the review shop eventually !
Interesting discussion about Rickie Fowler’s sunglasses. Can he not afford a pair or two with the same frames but clearer lenses? Maybe yellow for overcast conditions and clear for dusk?
I play in glasses. I tried playing in prescription sunglasses the other week. I was terrible, much worse than my normal standard. Switched back to my normal glasses after 6 holes and was back to normal levels.
You should give a tour pro the 10 mulligan, you get 10 and Guy gets 10 and see how the three different levels use it. Three different perspectives on the same course. Or some variation of that. Anyways, love your videos, and big fan!
1:25 Timing for most pga tournaments is terrible for us Aussies. I think this is another reason why most of us here are Liv fans. Golf in more places other then the USA and therefore better times to watch the global game.
I like trying unknown products, I have Lazrus wedges in the bag and I’ve tried Lazrus putter and Pyramid blade putter (like it), but I recently got a Scotty Newport 2 (used), simply so I can’t use an excuse for a bad putting day.
Tee times were even too late for us in California. I watched the entire Canadian Grand Prix F1 race before switching to ANYONE in contention still having 1hr before teeing off LOL.
I was thinking the exact same thing about Tiger this weekend. I honestly didn’t even realise he wasn’t playing until the news broke about him not playing in The Open next month. There’s so many good players/personalities I don’t think he’s missed anymore. If anything, I found it better that he wasn’t taking all the TV/media coverage with an average performance.
His final lasting impact will be the great players he inspired to play golf at a professional level. He left golf in a better place than he found it and delivered dominance my generation had never seen
Love this podcast, and your test on the Indi wedges. On the opposite side of the coin, can you do a review of super premium brands like Miura, Vega, etc. Cheers!
My good friend is a PGA teaching pro in LA for the last 5 years. He tried his best to secure some tickets to the venue but it was rich people only allowed. The country club scene crowd has ruined golf in the US, and this is a great example. I have played golf with prescription sunglasses for 10 years , Rickie can always bring some regular glasses …..he can afford them if he cant see then it is his own fault. I always bring both ….the sunglass polarization isn’t great for putting especially if water is present. He should know this ….it was a nice little article in Gold Digest a few years back
Great point by Guy on Rory about being so close so often it seems he is not winning. It’s just very difficult to close. It seems he is missing that magic on Sunday that he needs to take the victory. You have to hit the birdie putts on the back nine on Sunday, that’s what it takes
Great chemistry here between these lads each and every time! Make this a selling point for this channel: pro golfers who have become friends of this show and played Rick in the stroke challenge have soon gone on to see a definite uptick in their respective games 🤔
Guy, Costco gloves are amazing and last pretty long. Not sure what the prices in the exchange is but in USA you can buy 4 gloves for $22. Love tru-soft gloves from FJ and the Titleist are good but not much better than the Kirkland.
Hey Guy I’m called Guy, and I’m pretty sure I saw you in the petrol station in worsley a couple of weeks back but I wasn’t quite quick enough to say hello. Anyway nice to e-meet you, there’s not many of us about keep the faith it’ll happen one day. 🤣
As for the late tee times, you’re spot on. They did it to cater to the west coast prime time show time with the leaders…apparently they got very high viewership, but that was pretty dumb…Saturday did start later than Sunday…Sunday’s tee times were an hour earlier I think…but still. If there was a playoff, there was not much time to fit it in…even though they do a two hole aggregate now. With all the fan movement, etc., the two holes takes almost 45 minutes to get through…
Felt he needed to attack more pins to really put pressure on Clark. For the most part it was a steady round you would expect from someone up 1 or 2 going into the final round
A family friend who is a member, told me that the club didn’t want 50,000 people on the course so the cut the tickets in half. So only 25,000 people ticket double in price to make up the money for the USGA. I went to the first day and it was really nice to not have so many people there as a spectator
I real think there are 2 things that would speed up everyday golf. 1st is that stableford become the standard for public courses and that you have to reach a certain score before you can even start to play stroke play. Once the average person knows they are getting zero points most will just move on to the next hole rather then continue to play out the rest of the shots. The second would be the you have to graduate from tee boxes, so you have to get below a certain score (still stableford) to graduate to the tees behind. This would put most average golfers in a better spot to get better shots and lower their score, enjoy the game more even if they dont get better, and force them to play feom where their skill level deems they should not their ego. Anyway just my thoughts on it
Question. After not golfing for 20 years, I started playing again to spend time with my son. At 63 I am using the senior tees. When my son hits a regular drive off the reg tees , I can almost reach his shot. I feel this helps us even up the odds. Does anyone feel this is wrong ? Some people seem to make fun of me ! Any thoughts? Thanks
That’s what the different tees are for. Different abilities. It helps even the playing field. You could try a round of the other tees just to see how you get on but there’s absolutely no shame in playing off forward tees if ability or athleticism is an issue.
Lyle and Scott. Old Scottish golf clothing brand. Went more mainstream in the last 20 years but has refocused heavily on golf again recently. Hence their sponsorship of Rick.
Re: tees. I bought three brush tees 8 years ago, haven't bought a tee since 🤷🏼♂️. They offer zero resistance to the club and you never have to look for it after the shot.
Rickie could be a good bet for the Open, plays well in the wind, has placed well before plus won the Scottish. Could be another rory vs Rickie showdown at Royal Liverpool!
How could u go to sleep and now watch the back nine ??? And I'm from Australia so I've had all sorts of time zones !!! (La was actually not bad bc it was already mid mornin Monday !)
The problem was not having a major in California, but the fact that NBC and the USGA wanted to turn that into a prime time event for the East Coast of the US.
@@imCurveee That is 5:30 pm on the east coast which means a finish at about 9:30-10:00 pm. Most tournaments played on the west coast in the spring end up finishing around 6-7 pm on the east coast. In fact, most US tournaments, major or otherwise tend to finish in that 6-7 pm slot on Sunday. So has nothing to do with the Earth's orbit or spin. Has to do with the fact that NBC and the USGA are taking advantage of the added daylight at this time of year pushing back tee times to give them a chance to have a prime time event on the east coast. That is fine for US but not so much for the UK as Rick mentioned. Had the US Open ended at a more traditional 6-7 pm on the east coast of the US, Rick and most UK fans could have gone to bed by 1 am knowing who won instead of Rick going to bed at 2 am with the leaders still on the front 9.
@@robertrenekerjr6819 for the US Open to have finished at 6-7pm EST, the leaders would've had to tee off at 11:30am Los Angeles time. And if the leaders are teeing off then, when do you expect the other guys to tee off, at 6:00am? Do you understand how time zones work? Edit: west coast tournaments do not finish at 6-7pm EST as you claim, major or not. They're always later. The only factor is in the spring there is less daylight, so they may start a bit earlier per local time (i.e. tee off at 1pm LA time). But west coast leaders never tee off at 11am EST. Here I did some digging for ya. The Farmer's Insurance Open in San Diego had their final tee times at about 12pm local time (i.e. 3pm EST). Given an average 4-5 round, it would've been about a 7-8pm EST finish. Here's the thing too, that was in January, when daylight is much, much less. That's about the earliest west coast finish you'll ever see.
Second serve takien off tennis, would make hell of a difference in the game. I don’t see why second serve, mulligan on every tee wouldn’t totally change the game of golf.
The members and locals in the neighborhood of LACC bought up as many tickets as they could to keep people out of their club. They probably shouldn’t be allowed to host another major
As a New Zealander that was the best time for a major, first time it didn't finish in the middle of the night for us 🎉
What ? Most golf finishes at 12pm in New Zealand….
I know you guys are upset about the timing of the tournament. But as an Australian this is one of the few times it was played at a reasonable hour to be able to watch
So happy to see Rickie Fowler up there. He has been through such a tough time, and deserves all the success for having put in such hard work!
I’ve watched Wyndham Clark grow up in High School. I couldn’t be happier for the young man.
Thanks for the laughs at the end, love the podcast and the main channel!

Fair pay to those of us down under, a major on the US West Coast great timing for us albeit on a Monday!!
I really wanted Rickie to win, he’ll be back up there again soon, but stronger
Hopefully this gives him confidence going into The Open.
Doubt it.
I was just happy Min Woo was up in there in the results of the open.
Welcome to watching The Open for the states. The timing is equally terrible but still worth putting in the hours. Great US Open.
The open can only be played in one time zone, U.S open has choices to try and accommodate most areas
"Well first off, congratulations!" That one little comment is so Rick Shiels. He could have just dived into the answer, but he took a second to give a stranger asking a question a sweet compliment.
Great podcast. Hilarious ending. Good work 👏
As an Australian i thought the timing was awesome. Was great to wake up to the final group teeing off.
Great video "Guys". Thanks for the laughs.
The end of the episode was so funny😂. Great pair of Guys!
Same for us in Cali when The Open Championship is on. First tee time is usually around midnight.
But the UK has only one time zone to choose from, and doesn’t start the tee times so late they finish at dusk.
I love the idea of Mulligans and I do think it would help my score. I would mostly use mulligans on tee shots where I lost the ball out of bounds. At the US Open the playoff is a full round the following day, remember Tiger taking on Rocco where e blew is knee the first time.

I shot 86 yesterday with 9 pars and 2 birdies. Completely agree that mulligans would benefit those of us who are partial to a blow-up hole. 3 triple bogeys in the end for me after having to reload on two different tee boxes
That airplane noise the whole of the tournament was unforgivable.
I love my Wilson V6 irons! Had them for a few years and wont be changing anytime soon
10 shot challenge… Has to be Poulter. Big personality, already in the UK…
That was my thought. Has to be either a senior a liv guy cause of the travelers designated event.
The Open Championship is pretty terrible timing for us in California. It comes on around 1:00am every year.
I love your fantastic podcast Rick and Guy ❤❤❤

Thank goodness Rick doesn’t use his studio standards on showing his chipping game! Love you Rick!

I’m hoping for Morikawa based on what they said, but it probably is Poulter.

Hey GUYS, nice episode!
Waking up expecting to see a Rory win is the equivalent of us waiting for a break 75 with Guy and getting you taking 10 mulligans!
My good friend is a PGA teaching pro in LA for the last 5 years. He tried his best to secure some tickets to the venue but it was rich people only allowed. I don’t need glasses but even on sunny days I can’t read a green with my sunglasses on to save my life. Always have to take them off on the green
Isn’t the us open playoff another 18 holes like they did in 2008 with tiger and Rocco? Still the Saturday round ended at 11:30pm on the east coast
Great point by Guy on Rory about being so close so often it seems he is not winning. It’s just very difficult to close. It seems he is missing that magic on Sunday that he needs to take the victory. You have to hit the birdie putts on the back nine on Sunday, that’s what it takes
The mulligan handicap should be a new series you do!
The mulligan handicap is one of the best ideas I’ve ever heard.
Ah, now you know how us in the States feels each year getting up in the middle of the night tuning in for the open championship.
Really? Even if you live West Coast it will finish mid morning your time
Guy should do his own "Are you Dave Gorman?".
