    Guy and Rick, a message to the person who talked about his lad with anxiety and serious 1st tee nerves.
    My, then 11 year old, daughter got me into golf about a year before COVID became trendy. We started at the pitch and putt course with 3 clubs each, and then as we built up more of a set, we decided to try a really short 18 hole course.
    My daughter also has anxiety. As we approached our tee time, we could see the people behind us also waiting. They were going to see our first ever tee shots. My daughter started crying and said she wanted to go home. I tried to reassure her, saying we'd soon be out of sight.
    There were four men ahead of us about to tee off, so we stopped talking. Three of them hit balls in the right direction. The fourth toed the ball high and right. It hit a tree about 10 yards to the right of the tee box and bounced high over our heads and landed on the front edge of the car park. Luckily, no one was hit.
    I said to my daughter, "will you do better than that?" She nodded. She did, and we played 18 holes ... quite badly.
    Nevertheless, the lesson was that the people watching you have likely hit worse shots than your bad shot, at sometime in their lives. Even if they're good now.
    We still don't like being watched but at least we play every week and care less about those around us.
    I hope that helps your other listener.

      @Dude0000 Год назад +7

      ‘Before COVID was trendy’ lol. Love the framing on that… perfect.
      On your daughter, most golfers in my experience are so self involved in their own game, swing etc, they only notice the great shots. They expect bad ones.
      Anxiety is a problem for more intelligent people and I would guess your daughter probably is going off your comment.
      Just remember bravery is not the absence of nerves but doing it despite them.

    Your discussion about playing to your handicap has been a taking point for several years. I had some golfing mates who expected to shoot their handicap all the time whereas the real expectation was to shoot or beat your handicap once every 8-10 rounds.

    • @robertsims260
      @robertsims260 Год назад

      If think logically....your handicap is average of best 8 of last 20 rounds....so already thrown out worst 12/20, 60%. So left with best 40% of rounds ... BUT it's a average of these...so out of those 8 rounds you'd expect 4 above average and 4 below average by definition of average....with average being the handicap... So actually should expect to only break handicap in 4 rounds out of 20 .... So 20% of the time (1 round in 5)!

    To all those who have a child or friend or other who are starting out, it is quite true that the nerves may never go away BUT, your ability to tackle those nerves and overcome them will only get bigger, stronger, more powerful and you will overcome. The example of Tiger is perfect because even with that talent the nerves were still there but, the ability to overcome was so strong.
    Golf can mirror life and, the skills used to overcome those first tee nerves can be used in any situation. A change of perspective might be useful, those feelings of heart pumping hard, palms getting sweaty, breathing getting fast, those are the same for excitement! Its exciting being on the first tee, the whole round ahead of you! To help you with that you can also do what a lot of us do and imagine! Imagine you are on the first tee of the Old Course. Yes we do do that and don't try to deny it!!
    Practice does help immensely because being able to make the club head connect with ball with regularity will only lead to a better outcome.
    I liked what Guy had to say about the difference between looking and watching. All those looking on are thinking the same - I hope I hit it straight! - they are as nervous as you.

    I have to say that having a shorter driver is helping me big time. I started playing again after many years away. I got some newer clubs and played but always struggled with the driver (constantly slicing it). I found my old driver its over 20 years old and tried it and I am hitting it further and straighter. The old driver is two inches shorter. So I am going for a fitting this weekend.

    Love it! Rick vs Augusta!
    I’ll take Fitzpatrick at The Masters - became a fan when he won the US amateur at Brookline - I lived 20 minutes from there and was too much of a lazy hump to drive over. Did see Strange and Faldo on Sunday in ‘88 tho

    Hey Rick
    I have been thinking of a RUclips golf tournament for a year now and have an amazing idea of how to do it, and make it an ongoing thing that could become as big or bigger the even the pga, would love to work on it with you.
    Hopefully you read this comment but if not I'll keep commenting till you do 😊 and we can chat about it, cause I know it would be incredible, and that it will make for the most amazing content, for all parties, in so many ways I cant even start explaining in just a youtube message but it could be the biggest thing ever for RUclips Golf.
    So again, I really hope to hear from you, and if dreams come true, work on this with you.
    Cheers
    Mark

    Not going to lie. Once Scotty and Rory lost their matches I didn’t care for the final. Good for burns and young on two equally as big upsets in semi finals, just wasn’t the match I was looking forward to

      Did you watch scotty and Rory consolation match? Can't believe that wasn't the final.

    Great podcast guys. Regarding your finger, Rick (I believe it is Depuytren's contracture). I was able to continue to play golf comfortably (left hand pinkie for me) up until I had surgery (when my finger was so bent, I struggled to put my hand through a long sleeve shirt). However, if you want to see what happens with no surgery, check out Bill Nighy's hands............just saying! I had my surgery a few years back in December and was back playing in the Spring. There may also be non-surgical treatments but don't know enough about those to comment. It is way more common than you think!

    CANNOT WAIT for the Rick@Augusta break 75?!?! Rick...I'm sure you've received lots of comments about the finger - happened to me as well - looks like a boutonniere deformity and should be addressed (mine were casted for 6 weeks and "bent" back successful). Cheers!

    Let's go Cam Smith!

      Rory has more accolades in golf than 50% of the liv field ,aka "has been tour "together ,36 professional wins, 4 MAJORS, Cameron Smith 7wins ,we're talking legend status vs basically a no one son.Cameron Smith shouldn't even be allowed on tv,kids watch, people like to eat without puke coming in their mouth, dude looks like a homeless sid from ice age
