That cuirass was more designed to block bullets and other projectiles from early guns, hence it's protecting the more vulnerable areas to gunshots. Unrestricted movement would be super important for the fighting they're displaying here too.
No! It surprised me, but the whole setup was pretty comfortable and did not really cause any issues like that. I did have the cross guard snag on my slashed sleeve at one point, which definitely speaks in favour of an S-hilted greatsword instead of this one. 😅
You know, it would be awesome to see some more practical drills, in the sense that, I'd like to see what it looks like when a knight in full armor actually uses a greatswors to strike at a target with full intent and power to destroy said target, I'm a 3D Animator and sadly one of the hardest things for us is to find reference for this type of stuff.
@@VirtualFechtschule Yeah, honestly, you've no idea the amount of time spent looking for videos that would be useful to get reference for, and when looking at most HEMA videos about it they are mostly showing the proper form going through a drill at a slow pace etc, which is okay but doesn't show the physicality of the motion, when you're actually trying to hit something. What is the plate armor you are wearing on your arms? Almost as if jack chain and full plate slept together. Also where did you purchase the armor. Sorry I'm very curious.
No worries, and love the analogy. XD It's sometimes called almain armour (which is just 16th century anglicised French for German armour). The idea was to have easily and cheaply made armour available for foot retinues or for the mercenary recruitment pool to purchase, which would mean loads of reasonably well equipped foot soldiers (which was definitely important for the new way of war that focussed on disciplined infantry units).
It looks impressive. No doubt on that. But I started learning how to properly wield a greatsword and isn't it a bit slow how you swing or is that because of that armor?
It is a bit, as I was still trying to figure out how to do this well in armour at the time of recording. Additionally, this is a pretty heavy greatsword, so that makes it a bit slower than for instance my other one. :)
A backplate is still on the to-do list. ;) But I would also argue that you see footsoldiers definitely prioritise frontal protection during the late middle ages and 16th century. Leg armour is pretty useless to footsoldiers. It does offer more protection, true, but it's really hard to intentionally and solidly hit the legs. The real problem is that marching in leg armour is absolute hell.
@@alexhunt7810 It does! Although I also find it quite telling that even with shields being the most important, footsoldiers would quite often still not wear leg armour.
Armor like that (16th-17th century) is a response to firearms. (Pike and shot era). The same reason modern body armor only covers the vitals. Covering more with steel thick enough would weigh more than a man could realistically march with. Legs get deprioritized.
