    These guys were beyond great! The original four are gone sadly, along with the first replacement who sang on their biggest hits. Rest in Peace gentlemen, can't wait to see you on the big stage in the sky one day soon. Thanks for all the great music and laughs. You are proof we baby boomers and the greatest generation before us, lived at the time with greatest music.

    This was one of the very first songs I sang in public, so many years ago! I still love the song. Loves for me have come and gone over the years, but I still enjoy the song! The Four Freshmen were the first group that I became a real fan of, and many years later, I am still a big fan!

    I said it before and I'll say it again; such beautiful harmony with these groups and individuals of the 40s through the 60s are great. This, so-called rap and hip-hop is mostly noise and cussing. It has to be bleeped a lot during radio and television play. Not the 40s,50s,and 60s.

    What can I say, simply the best ever.I loved the voice of Don Barbour. Sad he left us so early.

    Jerry Long Saw them in SF in 1953. Ken Errair on trumpet and a Red Mellophone. I was a young, (16) trumpet player and Kenton fan. So, the Freshmen blew me away. Still a big fan. And getting OLD! And still play my horn. Haaa

    Thanks to the Freshmen sound that has been continued it's possible to enjoy great music. Hard to believe that the originals have all passed on. Todays Freshmen are just as gifted and just as inspiring.

    Only one year at Butler University but they made their start singing most every kind music including barbershop that’s why they were able to harmonize those great chords without writing them down . The influence of Stan Orchestra is in their sound unlike all the groups they played their own instruments adding a big band sound . This is why they lasted so long even though they had personnel changes .

    This music is sooooo beautiful! I had a chance of a lifetime to sing in Dr. Sal Ferrantelli's Quartet, "THE RE-FRESHMEN". It was always his boyhood fantasy to be one of the four freshmen. We got to sing all the great renditions of THE FOUR FRESHMEN, and he fine tuned them all to our voices. He has just retired from being the director of i'Cantori in Monterey, California. In our Refreshmen, I was his second Tenor, he was Baritone, Jebb Morris was first tenor, and unfortunately for us, our phenomenal bass, Mark Bergmen, just passed away. Cheers! Love the singing life!

    This version of the Four Freshmen was later than '55 -more like 2000. That fabulous high voice of Greg Stegeman was the closest yet to Bob Flanagan - the King Of Top tenors ! The LP was Voices in Standards - it's on Ebay - grab it !

      It's not a well known recording that I can see. I agree, their harmonies are as smooth as silk. The arrangement has a spot on lounge groove. It is by far the best rendition of this song. I love Nat King Cole's version too, but The Four Freshman nailed this one. (that's me on the left at the end of the video).

    This is really Voices in Standards (late 90's) with Greg Stegman - hi lead.This combination had that real Freshmen "punch" that the later groups lacked "Tho Brian Eckenberger sang a smooth hi voice -he never shoved it like Greg or Bob Flanigan did. The very latest Freshmen group with Tommy Boyington on top sound clean and musical but you won't hear 'em slam it out like this record we're hearing now. The other combination by the name of the Faux Freshmen did what this group does. It's like many notes literally expolode. So dynamic all the way. Look up Faux Freshmen on you tube and play Don't Make Me Sorry - you'll see what I mean. Thanks, so much.

      Of all the post 50's Freshmen reincarnations, this group seems closest to achieving the level of blend and vitality of the original quartet(s).

    • @algonquin1832
      @algonquin1832 7 лет назад +1

      Stegman's voice looks to be a high tenor but without personality. Bob Flanagan's voice set the vocal identity of the Freshmen unlike any of the following tenors are able to do.

    This is NOT the version from Voices in Modern. The real version from that album is far superior -- this is probably from some later period.

    • @kirkfrederic
      @kirkfrederic 10 лет назад +1

      Voices in Modern did not have this song. Best I can find is that this is a 2001 recording from "Golden Anniversary Celebrations" - the production value certainly smacks of something newer. Voices in Modern was recorded mono. I agree that some of the older performances reflected astoundingly high performance levels. Though the current lineup is doing some really impressive stuff.

      @musicinreverse7479 8 лет назад +2

      I differ on which version was best. The Ken Errair '55 was excellent but didn't have the big block chord sound of the Greg Stegman foursome. That LP was called The Four Freshmen Voices In Standards - releasedin the late 90's - this Nearness was more of a real production number with super chords.

    • @giannahughes
      @giannahughes 6 лет назад +1

      This version has full harmony throughout. The early Freshmen Voices In Modern featured Ken Errair on mostly soloing and just some harmony.I did have this LP back in the good old days.
