My experience has been to start reporting with excel.
Once the useful metrics (keep it minimal amount of metrics at a time) are figured out and more people are involved (ie department heads, supervisors) use a reporting software.
Think about emailing reports rather than have them in a dashboard someone needs to login into.

Thank you for addressing the Onvio question/topic in even more detail and using your network to provide even more input! Probably an even bigger takeaway from this, for me at least, is the reminder of how great of a resource the accounting community can be to each other if we are willing to de-silo and communicate with each other in these types of forums.

I started my firm last year. I use Ultra Tax and Onvio combo. The only good aspect of Onvio is the portal and printing the tax return directly from UT to Onvio (client can access instantly on their end of the portal). Aside from that, I am 37 and pretty good with technology. I have spent 20+ hours trying to figure out the projects, time tracking, and billing aspects of Onvio. I couldn’t figure it out, which is crazy. I decided it’s just not the right fit. I’m going to use other platforms for project management. I use Ignition for billing. And I don’t do time tracking as of now but if I do, I will look for another platform. Onvio is going to be really difficult to implement for these things.
