Hard Rock and Classic Metal require 3 important factors that make those genres be considered true music: Guitar skills, talent and lots of passion for music. Mr Big is a huge example of great music.

yes yes yes...you're 200% right.i busted my ass teaching myself how to play guitar and it wasn't easy and so did the guys in my band...musical skills are not handed to you....putting a band together is not easy..the right guys are hard to find and you will search far and wide all over hell's half acre until you find like minded guys....then you have to work work work..rehearsing,writing,working on your image because last time I checked you couldn't look like. coal miners and then maybe,,just maybe, you might be ready for your first gig..and that's a whole other story ..my point:music, great music is not the work of genies, magic or wishful thinking...it's hard hard work and a lot of trial and lots of error until you might get it right...

I remember meeting Paul Gilbert at a clinic in Asheville at the Musicians Workshop. Nicest guy you could ever hope to meet. He said to me after the event, wait until you hear the band I’m in. He told me the members and all I heard was Billy Sheehan...lol I’d never heard of Eric Martin or Pat Torpey. He said Eric was like a modern day Steve Marriott, which got my attention, but he already had me at him and Sheehan in a band together. What’s funny was Paul was like bored because there was nothing for him to do that night and the clinic was over. So you could tell he just wanted to hang with anyone and talk guitar. He sat and played requests from me, I was just blown away. Basically a free guitar lesson from Paul, he most likely wouldn’t remember, I’ll never forget! Mr. Big definitely one of my all time favorite bands. R.I.P. Pat Torpey

Man, that's a great story, and you tell it so well that I could just imagine it while I was reading it. Great to hear that Paul Gilbert was/is a cool guy, in addition to being a blindingly technical virtuoso on guitar! 👍

The guy who owns the shop has it on film, I remember him filming it. I’d love to see it. This was in like 1987 or 1988...a long time ago. I remember Paul played me a bunch of Van Halen stuff. He’s a fan of Eddie’s big time. What was cool was to see that he gets excited about other players the way I was excited about seeing him. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 30 plus years ago...His clinic was also incredible. Billy came and did one about 6 or 7 years later. It was mind blowing as well. Also another very nice laid back dude. 👍🏻

When I was a young boy
    My momma said to me
Once a woman gets your soul
    You'll never shake her free
    These are words of wisdom
It turns out she was right
    Gotta find a lover-
'Cause I need a fix tonight
    Once I thought her lovin'
Was a habit I could break
But when I go without it
    My body starts to ache
    Whoooooo (etc.) ooooo
Watch it touch me deep inside
    Whoooooo
    Somethin' snaps inside my mind
When I feel it comin' ain't no sense in runnin'
    I'm addicted to that rush
    Every time we touch
    Never get enough
'Cause I'm addicted to that rush - Yeow!
Look around I stop and stare
    Got to get a taste
    Pretty women everywhere
We ain't got time to waste
    Lookin' for a little thang
    To fit into my plans
On the town I'll hurt you down
    I'm walkin' like a man
When I feel it comin' ain't no sense in runnin'
    I'm addicted to that rush
    Every time we touch
    Never get enough

This band lineup is low key amazing like one of the best ever. I think they didn’t really make it huge because they don’t have a lot of cool factor. Unfortunate timing, as well. Their first two albums were released in 1989 and 1991. By that time, big hair and leather pants were being replaced by flannel shirts and thrift store wardrobes, and the "grunge era" bands were beginning to dominate.

They didn't have any albums that were kind of end to end catchy songs like appetite for destruction, but they were pretty big. Especially compared to a lot of other bands that were technically good (and stuck behind bands like Poison, who was nothing special when I saw them live, and their guitar work is pretty dull).
Warrant (less of a technical burner) was another pretty good band that was great live. But everyone knew "to be with you" and "cherry pie" back then. At least those of us living in the country.

We waited nearly an hour for them to come out before it was announced that the show has been postponed for 30 days due to an illness with one of the bandmembers. Came back 30 days later, Paul had a custom made dark blue suit on with F hole patterns all over it, and we were blown away with what the band did. @Michael Wong sorry..not even close ....dlr's music was wicked commercial on purpose ......he wanted to make money after the probably very hefty paycheck he was getting from van halen, ssi he found the best musicians(Steve vai, billy sheehan and gregg boisonette) and scored some hits....but to compare mr.big with the david lee roth band is...well...apples and oranges....

Que una vez que una mujer captura tu alma
    Nunca podrás liberarte de ella
    Estas son palabras de sabiduría
    Resulta que tenía razón
    Necesito encontrar un amante
Porque necesito una dosis esta noche

Mr. Big always the best example of how sheer talent doesn't necessarily guarantee success as a band. Don't get me wrong, I know they were huge in Japan and that they still had a couple of hits but they were never as big as they probably should have been. Especially not with two literal gods of their instruments in Sheehan (bass) and Gilbert (Guitar) in the band.

1989-One of the best summers of my life. Had a summer job between 1st and 2nd year of college, dayshift in shipping at a factory, then a 3 hour job delivering parts from it in southern Ontario to Michigan. Made some good coin getting paid to drive into the sunset and first discovered Z-Rock, an AM all hard rock station when I crossed into Michigan. Got to hear all the new hard rock and metal releases 3 months before "some" of them came to Canada! Mr Big, Warrant, Skid Row, and many others a couple times a week for 3 months before they came out up here! I was in HEAVEN! And hearing Judas Priest "Ram It Down", Anthrax "Indians", Alice Cooper's "Poison" all on AM Radio- well, I thought I was dreaming! And to boot, I made enough to buy my mint '84 Monte Carlo AND, started dating a hot young lady from the factory I delivered to, on the companies dime! Up there in the top 3 of my best summers of my life! Footloose and fancy free!

Nice! I’ll never forget watching them play their first show ever, at the Omni, a small club in Oakland California. We waited nearly an hour for them to come out before it was announced that the show has been postponed for 30 days due to an illness with one of the bandmembers. Came back 30 days later, Paul had a custom made dark blue suit on with F hole patterns all over it, and we were blown away with what the band did. I’ve never been so impressed with a guitar player in person before or after that gig.

Brian Sauer, they didn’t need to make up for it, just the fact that we got to see the first ever show from this band was phenomenal, and it was in a small club! I think it was something like a 700 capacity place
