Well yes an approved used Merc is a safer option but their guarantee is worryingly limited and doesn't cover (amongst other important things) electrics or body issues. So if for example, your windows cease to seal on closing after a month, then you have to pay Mercedes £135 to find out if their insurers will cover the repair under guarantee. Now that's quite a risk because it's a fiddly repair and can cost a lot in expensive labour if they turn you down. Sadly my experience of this quickly dulled my love affair with the car. Also, don't expect the transaction at the dealer to be quick. My purchase took hours... even had to go out for lunch while they sorted paperwork.

Wow what a story..... Mercedes should be embarrassed by their Reliability issues but it seems like they don't care ! These complaints have been known for more than 10 years ! I had one of these as a courtesy car while my Audi was being repaired, and I was quite impressed. Nothing astonishing, but a economical, comfortable daily driver with good tech. The E220d I drove felt underpowered, but it was more than happy cruising once you got up to speed and I thought the engine was quite refined for a diesel (and I wouldn’t touch a diesel personally, although I drive 30k miles a year) 9 speed gearbox was very nice too, originally I thought it would drive me crazy constantly changing ratios, but the drive was seamless.

They aren’t as comfortable as you might think, overly firm ride, you feel all the bumps in the road, those you can’t even see and the seats are too firm and not sculpted for good seating posture. Mine has the agile suspension (which I think is a trick valve in the damper), it’s not great, the car skips over mid corner bumps and at times (on British roads I guess!) doesn’t have some travel on extension, it’s noisy. My previous car. Build quality is good but surfaces are ‘hollow’ so beyond looking really good they don’t quite have the tactile feel you’d be expecting... In car tech is ‘almost excellent’, it’s a touch slow at times and the radio presets don’t swipe in the order you have preset them, and that is really irksome! Had mine two months now and this my conclusion already!! My previous daily, a Lexus was a more comfortable and quieter ride but the tech wasn’t as snazzy as the Merc and believe it or, my Lotus was more comfortable!!
Most uncomfortable car seats ever...….also design looks terrible, this car will date very quickly. Gear box is about the only good thing about it. I got rid of mine.....
I prefer the 3-spoke bagde the old way on the bonnet, not the way its integrated in the grile. And the particular car misses the good looking wood trim. This silver trim looks cheap.
The interior quality feel is far from what it used to be in older MBs. Just press on the dashboard with your hand. Squeaks and creaks. That was what you got if you bought a Fiat in the 80's..... not an MB.
Your reviewing a car range but give no details of costs either to buy or service? You have a particular car, it would have helped to give cost new and current sales price of that vehicle.
I bought a new e class in 2017 - same model as this e 220 d with options - (full digital dashboard- metallic blue paint and a upgraded stereo) - a little over £40K - hence the expensive car tax of £465. Current trade value of car after 3 years and 35000 miles - £17500. Also service costs before 3 years include full set of brake discs and pads for £1000 from merc main dealers. Expensive to run but a cracking car if you love big depreciation German cars. One big lesson learned.
Mercedes Benz is a Awesome car. I have an E320; BUT, parts when needed are EXPENSIVE!!! if you can afford cost prices of parts..then Mercedes is good for you..if not..find a car that is no an arm and a leg to repair
No doubt very economical, very comfortable, amazing on long drive, my current mileage is 61k and AdBlue owner manual msg appear on the screen, when I checked it there is a half tank. After the research I found the information it may be adBlue pump is not working properly. Car is now out of warranty and I have no clue how much it will cost.... from FB people told me approx 1k to 1.5k. Which is lots of money to fix. This type of top brands goes to garage with low mileage I would never recommend MB.
It's not as solid as older models though. It feels less solid. Knocking on the panels on the W211 sounded dense and solid. These sound a bit more hollow. And rattles remain. Also the centre console is not great if ordered in the glossy black. Too much scratches.
Exactly. Also try just press on the dashboard... Horrible compared to the older models. Its worse than the w212. Which in its turn is worse than the w211 and w210. Also try press on top of the gauge cluster on a w210 or w124 and then do the same on the w213. Same with door handles for example. Just horrible if you come from any of those older cars to the newer ones. Feel like is that what I'm paying big $$ for?? The interiors look good in pictures. But as soon as you touch anything it just feels frail and thin now. MB is not what they used to be. Those points were some of their hallmarks back in the days compared to other cars. They just left all that behind. Could just as well have re-branded the cars at the same time.
Hi guys, I would like a recommendation from you if possible. I'm thinking to buy the plug in hybrid E class but I'm concerned of the failure of the electric part of the car as I read about plug in hybrid Passat people complain it has major faults after passing the warranty, the repair bill was up to £3000. Can you please suggest which is better ? The E class with plug in ? Or the simple E220 ? Thank you guys in advance
I did have E300 2013 Hiybrid After 4 years old Every year maintenance did costs me £3000 £5000 pounds 1 point merceded benz wolverhampton had the car for 4 months and never give me time to enjoy it nice comfortable to ride but nightmare to deal with mechanical problems Dream car was worse care for me ended sold in auction.
I'm looking at either an eclass v6 or a Cadillac CTS with the 2.0L i4 turbo, just with fuel being so expensive. What I'm worried about is cost of ownership on a Mercedes, but they're easier to find in my price range compared to the Cadillac. What does the cost of ownership look like on average per year?
I've driven 123,700 km without any problems my 2017 s213 e220d, and at this time instantly appear AdBlue system warning sign on the dashboard. Well, the AdBlue liquid was half plain, good for more than 6.000 km to drive. I restart several times but the message changed to 800 km to go. I visited the official car dealer shop, checked by computer and they had informed me: "we have to change the AdBlue tank which cost you (eg. the owner) more than 1800 euro. the two sensors in the tank are irreplaceable separately". woow, I didn't expect from a very good condition car. Shame and blame for Mercedes!
This is a review of a "new" older MB E class and nothing about should one buy a used MB E Class. The generic answer to the title of this video after browsing years of consumer magazines and reviews is probably no - unless you print your own money.
I'm considering buying used 2017 E class but is it really that bad? How often does it require maintenance and how much will be avarage spending on the car? Thank you!
Reliability will never match a Lexus! I love how reviewers say all German cars are very well built and have great quality but in reality these cars have poor reliability. I rarely see car reviews that mention reliability, the most important part of car ownership especially buying used as in this video. I have never once seen any German car brand top reliability surveys, ever!
LH737flyer if I had an exception of poor reliability with a German car (Audi A4, 2009 model purchased second hand in 2012} why has there never ever been a German manufacturer with a number one in reliability ratings? Please show me one respected reliability survey where any German brand has been number one. That simply doesn’t happen unless you can prove me wrong, (proof required). The reliability of German cars will never ever match that of Japanese cars. I have never heard of horror stories with Japanese cars but I have with German cars. My family which starts with my parents in 1993 (previously to 1993 had unreliable leaking Fords) have only ever driven Japanese brands except my Audi A4 which was far from reliable, three separate issues on a car that was purchased 3 years old, I’m guessing that you never owned a Japanese car for a long period of time. My brother is driving my mothers 2002 Toyota Corolla and has only had one serpentine belt and one windscreen washer pump replaced from new in 2002 (excluding parts that need scheduled maintenance). As I said previously no premium German car will ever match the reliability of a Lexus. If you believe that German brands are more reliable than a Lexus well then you are deluded!
Driving a 20 year old Japanese car is boring asf. Some people drive what they enjoy. I love my W213. Others love their Ferraris, do people obsess on the reliability of Ferarri when they buy one? I was well aware of the reliability of German cars vs Japanese cars when I got my E class, but it still what I wanted.
I own the e class w213 and will have you know that this car is very reliable. Yes had many toyoya cars in the past and been amazing when it comes to reliability. I won't buy another car but a Mercedes. A superb car with reliability to match. I own the e220 amg version. It's fast very comfortable and looks incredible.
Michael Buckley Most people couldn’t care less about what they drive. I drive a Mazda6 which I love. People who can afford a Ferrari more often have more than just one car and I am sure they don’t care about reliability. Each to their own.
I was gonna buy the w213 but after watching this video, I think I will stick with my 2018 GS F-Sport. I have no time for driving to the dealership every two weeks for repairs!
AMG edition I know,it's absolutely hideous solution You don't have enough oomph to spin that piece massive rubber, and when you buy 220d I believe you're aiming for economy, witch it absolutely demolishes by adding at least %30 to fuel consumption in compare to 225/55 R17's

Or should buy an Fiat and fixed 10 times in to one year BUT to any "corner garage" ? The times when they build durable and good cars HAS GONE !!
Its a beautiful car but how can it have so many issues from factory? I would never buy a car with so many design flaws, especially coming from Mercedes.
Not an e220d if you are going to do high miles I know of 4 that have had to have camshafts replaced at around 100k miles thankfully under warranty (one is mine) Build isn’t as good as previous generation, gearbox like changing gear too often. Terrible road and engine noise. Has to be said though, still way better than any other car on our fleet. Also amazing warranty and service from our local dealer.

Techy D Cannot be true
LH737flyer You are deluded!
i had one for 8 months ,dont buy one very poor
Most uncomfortable car seats ever...….also design looks terrible, this car will date very quickly. Gear box is about the only good thing about it. I got rid of mine.....
I prefer the 3-spoke bagde the old way on the bonnet, not the way its integrated in the grile. And the particular car misses the good looking wood trim. This silver trim looks cheap.
The interior quality feel is far from what it used to be in older MBs. Just press on the dashboard with your hand. Squeaks and creaks.
That was what you got if you bought a Fiat in the 80's..... not an MB.
Duh, because it is real wood idiot lol
The car put anything in its class to shame
Why are parts so expensive for merc's it is just a normal car.
What parts have you replaced
can this car be recommended to someone that has bad luck with cars to the point i only buy old cars and just dont bother doing any repairs
Car looks good but nobody is allowed to go and pick one up as most places are Shut and will be for some weeks , possibly months
Sold mine. reliability nightmare two months into owning it.
Really beautiful car and that rims look like a million bucks. Would not mind owning an E-class like that. Suits my drive style like a glove.
Excellent review...very informative and fair. You covered all the relevant details.
Well? Yes or no?
I did have E300 2013 Hiybrid
After 4 years old
Every year maintenance did costs me £3000 £5000 pounds
1 point merceded benz wolverhampton had the car for 4 months and never give me time to enjoy it
nice comfortable to ride
but nightmare to deal with mechanical problems
Dream car was worse care for me ended sold in auction.
We've read all the specs, we want to know your opinion on what's it like to drive! Bit of a pointless review.
Why didn’t you talk about the Exclusive line?
in germany the E class is taxi and i saw many cars hit 300000 km and more its relly reliable
Thank you!
@@tarlangardashov6553 did you buy it?
Reliability will never match a Lexus! I love how reviewers say all German cars are very well built and have great quality but in reality these cars have poor reliability. I rarely see car reviews that mention reliability, the most important part of car ownership especially buying used as in this video. I have never once seen any German car brand top reliability surveys, ever!
Eamonn McDermott That’s just not true, you probably just have experienced exceptions
Love it ❤️ Buy one !!!
this is an excelent informative description of the ar, however the websit is poor, so gave uo my search.
I was gonna buy the w213 but after watching this video, I think I will stick with my 2018 GS F-Sport. I have no time for driving to the dealership every two weeks for repairs!
Why 275 tires fitted on an 220?
AMG edition
I know,it's absolutely hideous solution
You don't have enough oomph to spin that piece massive rubber, and when you buy 220d I believe you're aiming for economy, witch it absolutely demolishes by adding at least %30 to fuel consumption in compare to 225/55 R17's
@@siouex Yes that’s fucking stupid wtf
Hi everyone. I already was own 2 Lexus models ( 1 - 2011 LS600HL with RSR pack , 2 - 2017 NX300H luxury ) . Bolth has some issues unacceptable to that name .... !!!! Now i own a 2017 Mercedes E class 350e 2 L petrol plug-in hybrid , 80 ooo miles , wich until today was perfect !!!! ... On the way back from city he didn't allow me to drive with more than 20 mph , without any woorning lights on the dash !! Should i pay 300 £ to a Mercedes dealer just find out what's going on ? Or should buy an Fiat and fixed 10 times in to one year BUT to any "corner garage" ? The times when they build durable and good cars HAS GONE !!
I think it's the way you drive them.
Its a beautiful car but how can it have so many issues from factory? I would never buy a car with so many design flaws, especially coming from Mercedes.
Mercedes ads say Mercedes.... The Best or Nothing.... Obviously that doesn't include Reliability !
It’s a 2016?
Waz no it isn’t this car in the video is a 2017 66 plate.
Tupac Shakur 66 is from 2016-17
It's a nice ride. I like it.
Not an e220d if you are going to do high miles
I know of 4 that have had to have camshafts replaced at around 100k miles thankfully under warranty (one is mine)
Build isn’t as good as previous generation, gearbox like changing gear too often. Terrible road and engine noise. Has to be said though, still way better than any other car on our fleet. Also amazing warranty and service from our local dealer.
thanks stay safe
If you have 50 grand in the bank in cash value to buy a car like this then you have enough to go further to get the 2019 refresh with the best interior the car industry has ever seen.
Wait the 2018 and 2019 aren't the same interior wise?
@@nr1pimme I think (not certain) but in 2019 Mercedes updated their range to have the nicer interiors and better more sleeker looking entertainment screens
Ryan you can get the 2016s with the better screens and they go for closer to 20-30k used
Ryan no the facelift is coming til sometime in the 2020 the full screen is a 1000 pound upgrade
@@shifty277 tbf I’ve seen a 2018 with the full digital digital dashboard. But I think they come on most of the 69 plates. Look way better than the standard gauges!
I have one in black , love it.
Mate, why your steering wheel in passenger side?🤣🤣🤣🤭
E class Mercedes are bullet proof with incredible fuel consumption. I have owned the 350 and found them to quick and obviously not so good on fuel as the E220 reliable vehicles that have style and reliability.
Nice car in petrol form but like all these type of cars to difficult to repair. All the same lexus, bmw only the audi are even worst
Not a word on reliability. Almost useless. We already know all those things from the normal reviews
The wheels are too big and ugly for what this car is. This is an E220d, not an E63 or even 53. I’d go for the smaller rims and more comfortable ride, and I’m a ZOOMER.
Have the CLS 400d, same size wheels, worst ride I’ve ever had, even on “ comfort “
Not a patch on a LEXUS
No
It's a beautiful car, highly refined and comfortable, but it doesn't drive as well as a Ford Mondeo.
That's funny,good one
The Mondeo is in reality it’s equal with equivalent engines.
Engine spec - maybe
But not 9 speed gearbox
Not premium materials and built quality
Not fast and mesmerising infotainment system
Not comfort of RWD
Not overall MB refinement
I was driven in new Mondeo,and I've done >80k miles in W213 in past 2 years,my friend,your confusing finger with a dick.
best car i've owned! Do iT!
Taxi
Road tax 465
2016 mercedes e220d SE Premium £20 a year
Alan McCoye mine is the same model and it’s £465
You forgot to factor in the first 5 years the luxury car tax that’s why it’s £465
smxlad don’t pay that on a 2016 that law came in 2017
Bad sound quality
Cracking used buy e class ? Hope you don’t get adblue issues all diesel models will suffer with adblue errors as early as 29k mls. The fix isn’t cheap either if it’s not a simple nox sensor ..you’ll be looking at between £1600 to £1900 to repair..don’t believe me do the research before you buy guys. I’ve just been stung shame on you Mercedes inferior parts..with clear sell by failure dates. 100%
Biased review. Feels flimsy and cheap, rattles whatever centre console button you press it squeaks. Plus all electronical issues. Not great buyers advice
Uncomfortable seats front and rear, had several m b all vastly overpriced not very reliable, wont do high mileages, I do up to 80000 per year. Customer service is nothing like as good as Volvo BMW or VW.
Totally disagree. I went from an owner of 6 continuous BMWs to an E220d W213 last year and I'm very impressed, Seats are excellent and very comfortable, 80km commute every day, so quiet and refined and not a single issue.
🙏
no no no!!!
WHAT KIND OF MAN LIKES A PANORAMIC ROOF ? THAT REVIEWER IS A GIRLY MAN ! NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT !
It’s ok for the old men !
Most uncomfortable car seats ever...….also design looks terrible, this car will date very quickly. Gear box is about the only good thing about it. I got rid of mine.....
Why would you buy one in the first place ? 🤣
No you should buy a toilet roll 🤣🤣🤣
