  • The ardent segregationist Judge Leander Perez ran Plauqemines Parish, Louisiana with an iron hand for fifty years. Here he tussles with William F. Buckkey Jr in 1968 over some of his more extreme racial views. From the documentary "The Ends of the Earth: Plaquemines Parish Louisiana" by Louis Alvarez and Andrew Kolker at www.cnam.com.

    Perez was an Isleño, people descended from Canary Islanders sent to Louisiana under Spanish rule. Hispanic is not a race but means of Spanish speaking heritage.

    It wasn't just Perez and the Isleno community. Many Mexicans, Tejanos, Cubans, and other Spanish Americans were equally racist as Perez in those day.
    This is the irony of "Latino" history. They used to say that they were white.

      As far as skin color goes, Latinos, Hispanics, and Creoles can be pale, very dark, and anywhere in between.
      My own skin changes depending on sun exposure. For the majority of my life, I would not have been able to pass the paper bag test. Now that I am inside more than not, I could be considered passe blanc.

    Hispanic is not a race. Only Americans use the it as a race. Hispanic could be anyone who speaks Spanish. However originally the term meant anyone from Hispania, which is the region of south western Europe that forms Portugal and Spain. There is never such a thing "too much hate"

    • @ErinFrught
      @ErinFrught 3 года назад

      VERY WRONG. Just because someone speaks Spanish does not make them Hispanic. Just like not speaking Spanish makes someone descended from Hispanic parents makes them not Hispanic. According to your reasoning, everyone can change their ethnicity by using Duolingo. I don't think so. That's not how this works. The truth is in your DNA, not your words.
