    After I score good in my upcoming exams I'm gonna request my parents to get me a Veena :).. 🦋
    I've learnt Casio keyboard and Harmonium previously but now I'm crazy about Veena. The beautiful and rich sound of a Veena is a treat to the ears! 💖😊
    Looking forward to learn more from you in future ma'am. Your explanation is just mind blowing. 🌸💫

    I'm an absolute beginner on the veena and normally go about tuning it with a commercial tuner phone app, which I use for guitar tuning as well.
    It has more or less worked for me. .
    But this session with Mala exposed a whole new way of tuning the veena with a drone accompaniment. Somehow the instrument feels more "in tune" this way.. So thanks madam for this wonderful lesson on the basics of veena tuning with a drone ..

    A very lucid explanation! Thanks. I have a request for clarification.
    Generally, one sets the tuner to E or F and then sets the SaariNi string to this Shruti. Then the Panchama would be B or C.
    As I know, as per the western system, the equivalent for Shadjam is C and Panchamam is E.
    So, my request is, why is it like this, the switch in the nomenclature....the SaariNi string is set to E or F in the tuner, and then Panchamam becomes B or C.
    I look forward to the clarification. I thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Sakalam Sangeetam

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. As per my knowledge, the 12 semitones in an octave are the same for all types of music and pitches are set as per the nature of the instrument and pitches given for compositions. Unlike in Indian classical music western classical compositions are set to different pitches. Hence even if an instrument is set to pitch B,C or F the composition pitch is what will determine where their starting point is. So there is no switch in nomenclature. If an instrument is set to pitch B or C it is as per universal music norms.

I consider it my fortune to have come across your channel online. I have a question, would it be wrong to use a Panotuner App On Iphone or Androids? Will we have to shift to Ishruthi as per your recommendation or is Ishruthi for advance students?

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Divya. I hope your travel with my channel gets all your concepts put in place. I have never used a panotuner and hence cannot comment on it. If you are comfortable using it, then go ahead. I prefer ishruthi only because it gives the frequency of two relative notes, namely P and S which makes tuning really sharp.

      Thanks Raghu for your observation. When we talk of the range of the instrument, we talk only about the built in octaves, which is 3 and half octaves. What we can do with it in terms of pulling and stretching is to do with the calibre of the artist.

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  4 года назад +2

      Many a times this noise comes.from a loose fine tuner peg or an untuned 4 th string. Run your fingers over all the 7 fine tuning pegs and whichever is loose push it.down and tighten .Then adjust the pitch with the brigadai. Also tune the 4 th string.

    Note that the shruti box app is a virtual tanpura. It is not just producing an E note but two high B notes and a low B note as well.

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  4 года назад +1

      Thanks John for writing in. Yes, I am aware of the multiple frequencies coming from the tanpura app. When the main string of the Saraswathi Veena is set to pitch E, the rest of the three strings are B, E & B all subordinate to the main playing string. It therefore helps to have referral B 's while setting the E which is why I prefer this app to the unitone ones. 🙏

    Has the Veena got anything to do with Indra the God?

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  4 года назад +2

      Hi Greg, With reference to the most comprehensive book on the instrument ' Veena' by Dr. K.S. Raghavendra Rao ,the first mention of the vana (as it was called in earlier times) came during the Rig Vedic period. According to Vedic literature when Indra visited the rituals conducted by priests, this instrument was played in his praise.
      There is no direct association between Indra and the Veena.. This is the instrument of Saraswathi the Goddess of learning. Thanks for your response.
