  • TWA - Trans World Airlines at Lambert St Louis Airport - Flying into History -
Many TWAer's saw my DVD video called "Flying into History". It was my attempt to collate footage, photos and audio that I had collected of TWA at various points during my teenage years.
Trans World Airlines holds a very special place in my memories. The first flight I took was in 1988 on board a Boeing 767-200 from London Gatwick to Baltimore. The reason for the flight was for medical treatment for my brother who had been diagnosed as one of the first children in the UK with ALD - Adrenoleukodystrophy ("Lorenzo's Oil").
The treatment we received on that flight was second to none. One of the crew even took my family and I on a sightseeing tour of Washington DC. I was allowed to sit in the cockpit when at the gate at LGW. I was transfixed by aircraft from this moment. When I returned home I found out about TWA, it's history, it's difficulties, and I was even more interested. I then began writing to the London Offices for any information or promotional items - anything TWA! I amassed a number of timetables and Ambassadors magazines as a result!
At a very challenging point in my life, aviation spoke to me - much as it does today.
I had an idea, having recently re-mastered / re-edited some footage of Russian Tupolev TU154 aircraft (rare, loud, classics!) I thought I wonder if I could do something similar to some of my TWA footage.
    This is the result. A few things to note;
    1. The original footage was filmed in digital format only (it wasn't even HD!)
    2. The original footage was in 4 x 3 format (it wasn't widescreen!)
    3. The footage was all handheld, filmed through glass.
    4. This was the first 'proper' footage I really tried to get of aircraft - a skill and technique that has been developed, challenged and honed over many, many years now!
Regardless of the above points, I hope you will enjoy seeing TWA and some of the operations at their hub in St Louis and a few fleeting glimpses at London Gatwick.
Thank you TWA for giving me my interest. Thank you to the amazing flight attendant who did so much for us and to the manager at the London Offices who helped foster my interest.
TWA was taken over in 2001 by American Airlines. I am aware that many staff were affected by this and that there are many associated issues , however I hope this video brings back some fond memories.

Wow. Amazing how Lambert used to actually be a busy hub. Used to have 747's coming in regularly with hundreds of flights per day and now the largest aircraft that flies to KSTL is maybe the 737-800 with only a dozen or so takeoffs and landings per hour. The once bustling D Concourse is now no more than an empty shell which may see only one of two aircraft parked there at a time.

Great video. I was through STL a while back and what's happened to it is enough to bring a tear to one's eye. CVG is similar. From when I was a kid traveling with my parents all the way up to merger, if I'd given TWA a $20 bill every time they saved me, got me where I needed to be-well, all those AA tails would be painted with a TWA logo!

Hello Capt BrakeSet thank you for watching my video of TWA at St Louis, it's sad not seeing the TWA livery and reading about them any longer. It's nice that there are a few reminders though such as Kansas City Museum, Wings of Pride and the AA TWA liveried 737. Not the same but it's something to keep the TWA heritage alive.

TWA's final livery was exquisite, very classy. AA's legacy livery was as well, when it was well maintained and polished.

Hello @eyestoenvy thanks a lot for watching my video of #TWA Aircraft at St Louis. I agree 100% with your comments about TWAs final livery, it looked smart then, and would have more than held its own today. As for AA polished metal, it was definitely a classic, TWA even tried this on a 727 once I believe, I'm glad they didn't go with it though! Thanks again for taking time to comment 👍👍

Thank you so much for this wonderful compilation of TWA. I hope you and your family are doing well since your visit to STL. My very first flight at the age of 8 was out of STL Lambert on an Eastern Airlines DC-9-14 to EVV in August of 1968, a short flight but one that initiated my love for commercial aviation. I remember walking out on the ramp and walking up the DC-9s built in air stairs, greeted by flight attendants with pill box hats. We dressed up back then when flying, there was so much respect and class in those days. Back then the airlines at STL were American, TWA, Eastern, Delta, Allegheny, Ozark (STL was their home base), Frontier, and Braniff International. Also Southern, Texas International, Continental, and Mexicana would serve in later years as well as others. it was a commercial airliner heaven for viewing. My fondest memories of Lambert were sitting over at the Aero Squadron restaurant on the north side of the parallel east west runways watching the aircraft with the pilots waving at us as we waved at them from the patio. You could also listen to the ATC communications on headsets in the restaurant. it was my favorite place on earth. Sadly this is all a memory now. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and sharing the essence of what it was like for others to enjoy. God bless you and your family.

Too young to remember TWA (they merged when I was only 6), but I've had a passion for trying to imagine what my home airport of KSTL was like in the TWA era. Really good job on the remastering, and thanks for giving me a glimpse of what Lambert looked like in those days. Sad that it's a shell of its former self now...

+bananamanuk I've been seeing so many pictures from the glory days (even seeing TWA birds fighting for gates), and it's just sad to see that we've got nothing but SWA anymore when only a decade ago we were THE TWA hub. So glad that so many people have documented a piece of aviation history so well so that we can re-live it and tell future generations about how great TWA was.

Really appreciate this video. We were a TWA family for 37 years until AA bought the company. My husband was employed at the data center in KC and was one of the employees held over by AA to shut the company down. He was retired by AA when he and the handful of employees turned the lights off and locked the doors. What proud memories we have of the airline.

I was a “Pink Card” employee of TW in the ‘80’s in NYC Resv Sales Office at 2 Penn Plaza. As a reservations supervisor I was fortunate to have flown to STL, LAX and ORD reservations offices on business frequently. Naturally I also traveled extensively for pleasure. I loved our L-1011’s and 747 equipment. I also worked at JFK, gates ticket counter and ramp. After the layoff, I ended up at Tower Air for awhile before migrating to Continental at EWR. TW was the worlds greatest airline because of its people. I’m proud to have been a member of the TWA Family. Ernie Passarelli Supervisor-Area Reservations Sales. NYCRS.

Great pleasure and honor to have gained my FAA A&P License with TWA - Trans World Airlines at there Technical Academy. Learned allot on commercial aircraft and got to see TWA first B717 delivered to TWA. Was planning to work for TWA as a A&P Mechanic / Engineer at their overhaul facility in Kansas City, MO. I got the word that Wednesday to report for work with them, but then same week Friday TWA said American Airlines just bought them out and I was put on the hiring freeze list. Human relations / resources didn't know about the deal, they said to me that it caught them by surprise too. I went on to work at Goodrich Aerospace at Everett, WA (Now United Technology) on Boeing Blvd. down the road from Boeing. So I worked at a heavy depot level facility and worked on UPS, Northwest, Southwest and Alaska Airlines to name a few. Goodrich does many airlines as independent contract company. Later I returned back to Kansas City, MO working for US Airways. Still miss the Red, White and some new Blue paint in the air with TWA on the tail. TWA always had good people working for them. The top was the trouble like so many greedy CEO's today that don't reinvest in their company creation. Should be laws on the books about CEO's not reinvesting in your company and mergers - buyout plans.
Just my 2 cents - Nice Video

Hello Ajax, thank you very much for watching my clips of TWA aircraft on RUclips, moreover thank you for sharing your experiences and fondness for TWA. The airline touched many lives and it had a very rich history. Learning of the takeover was sad especially because TWA seemed to be re-finding itself with the JD Powers awards, topping the on-time flights on a monthly basis, new routes/focus cities, new on board products with Aviators and not to mention the 1 new plane every 10 days. And then, as we now know all of this stopped with the takeover. It's great that your initial training with the TWA Technical Academy set you up for a rich work life with the many other carriers you have worked on. Thanks again for your thoughts. Very interesting to read.

I LOVED TWA. I would fly TW out of Atlanta, especially when they opened a hub there, to STL and the on to the west and midwest. They flew a 727 into Madison, WI which I LOVED since I traveled there often. Then they replaced it with those tiny props. Made me mad as hell! In the 1980's they were still flying the 707's. Loved those when I could get one. TWA and Pan Am should our nation's flag carriers instead of every other airline these days. For instance. When I fly to Syndey AUS these days, I wouldn't think of flying anyone other than Qantas. On the other hand, if TWA or Pan Am were around, they would be on my payroll. Oh well, these carriers were great and now they are gone. Sad indeed.

TWA and Ozark Airlines were the absolute heart of St. Louis and Lambert Airport. When I was a kid in the 1960s and 1970s, it was wildly busy with takeoffs and landings pretty much one right after another. Even with it being a SWA hub now, the place is still s shadow of what it once was. I planespot sometimes, and it’s not unusual now to have 30 minutes’ wait between departures.

It's odd that TWA would fly both thee DC-9 (and MD-80/90 series) as well as the 727 (both 1000 and 200). Many times the odd livery's stem from mergers. I can think of a dozen carriers that became part of Delta, but not TWA. It gave me a very sick feeling when we lost both of America's flag carriers, Pan Am and TWA were our Air France or British. Airways in terms of prestige and professionalism. I enjoyed flying TWA, I had some nice experiencesss with inflight personal

+IRISHROVER Thanks very much for watching my upscaled TWA video and for your kind comment, I do appreciate it. I suppose corporate culture is what helps to ensure staff offer the best service. There was a lot of competition between the US airlines to do this and their rich history probably helped create that sort of environment. Thanks again.

On a connecting flight through St. Louis on TWA on board a 727-200 which combined a second flight with a stop in Syracuse N.Y. all operations were confined to the single cross runway which had to handled all landings as well we were in an extremely long lime of departing aircraft which must have added another 15 minutes. They just couldn't handle it where as other larger airports were better prepared.

+Ernest Johnson Thanks for watching Ernest. TWA unfortunately no longer operates. Indeed they were taken over by American Airlines and operated their last flight with a TW designator on Dec 1 2001. Both Pan Am and TWA were the most famous (internationally) US Airlines. The histories of these, and other airlines is very rich. Upon selling their main international route assets to London Heathrow to American, TWA began to retreat. Similarly Pan AM sold their routes to United. Pan Am ceased operations in December 1991.

When I used to live in STL, I flew TWA nonstop to, it seemed, virtually anywhere domestic. Thank goodness AA transferred my over 300,000 TWA miles to that airline. However, it was very unfortunate that the STL airport expanded and added another runway to relieve congestion, just to have American Airlines pull the plug on its STL hub.
Airlines in this country totally suck today. With virtually no competition, even Southwest has begun to gouge travelers out of STL.
