The captain was actually suspended for 8 weeks after investigation. Aparantly, He failed to check if the cargo in the hull was secured, and should have chosen a safer route or delayed the journey because of the bad weather. In the US there is not a law that states a ship's Captain has to drown with his ship. Neither is there a law stating a ship's Captain can not abandon ship until he or she is the last soul aboard.
There is precedent set by historical recordings of great Captains maintaining their post until all persons are off their vessel and/or going down with their ship if even one person remains aboard. The crew and passengers expect to be in the hands of the best possible individual to hold the responsibility of their lives and that of the ship in any given situation. Now if a Captain abandons his post to save his own ass before ensuring only he remains, he and every action he performs while under way will be investigated by the authorities, the crew and passengers. If there are deaths resulting from his actions leading to his vessel going down then that Captain can at best be charged with manslaughter. However, if at no fault to the actions and orders of the Captain the vessel still sinks and not all aboard are able to abandon ship before it sinks and the Captain has done everything in his power to save every life possible then he or she is not required to die on principle. Though many do due to the extreme duty and lives they are responsible for while under way. There are many instances of ships Captains going down with their ship and those souls trapped on board yet once the ship is submerged the Captain has found or luck helped them escape to the surface to survive and pilot another ship one day.
In America (Im only familiar with US Laws, our US Naval Forces due to my experience as a Marine and we follow US Naval regulations) if the Captain does not go down with his ship, he better be damned certain he did NOTHING wrong and he did EVERYTHING possible to save every damned person he could prior to his abandoning of his post. If not the Captain will end up incarcerated for a long damn time. To me, the loss of your honor and failure to do your duty would be worse than dying with the ship and those you are responsible for. Ive been in combat and I relate this to feeling I had at leaving one of my Marines mortally wounded on the battlefield if there was even the slightest possibility of my ass doing anything to get my Marine to cover and a FMF Corpsman (our medics). I couldn't live with the thought that my inaction cost another their life while I remained alive.

The Captain doing what is right. My father was a Master Mariner and I always asked him what would happen if the ship got into trouble. He always responded that he would be the last man to leave. So, I asked but what if other crew were trapped and couldn’t get off? Then he frightened the life out of me by stating clearly the he would stay with the ship and go with them to the bottom. My father was a lovely man but deadly serious about his profession.
I remember the Costa Concordia incident where the captain was one of the first the leave. My father was disgusted by the man.
Watching this video made me feel proud of the profession. This is a Captain that you would be happy to have as the leader of your vessel.

Her crew respects her and always has her back. One of them when she was telling me this loomed at her and said that if there was something they could do he would be right there with her. If not, he'd be the one dragging her a** off kicking and screaming. He told her that nobody wants her dead if there is nothing left to do. There's a difference between risking your life to save others and her plan.

@@Melissa-ho2vo Yes the videos used are from the actual incident. At the stern of the ship you will see the name "Eemslift Hendrika", "Amasus" as written on the side is the name of the company who owns the ship.
The weather was rough 50-60 feet tall waves.
They sent out the emergency signal around 10:00 on the 5th of April 2021 and shortly after the first 8 crew members were evacuated by SAR helicopter. The Captain and 3 crew members stayed behind and tried to pump out water from the cargo compartments, by 20:00 the ship was abandoned and the ship continued on autopilot away from the Norwegian coast but at 23:00 the engines shut down and the ship started drifting back towards the coastline. 7th of April four salvage experts where flown out to the ship accompanied by 4 thug boats and they started towing the boat back to land. Ship stayed a few months in dock for extensive maintenance before traveling back to the Netherlands.

Not admirable the ship wasn't sinking he had no reason to jump. He just made the job harder for the tug boats. Left the boat with the prop running meaning tug boats have to chase a moving ship down and try to hook up to it on the port and stern of the boat. Making the tug boats job extremely dangerous. There is no reason he should've jumped enless the ship was physically taking on water and sinking.

Three of the Azimuth thruster units in the hold broke free and slid, causing the ship to list and the weather was worse than predicted. The Captain probably lost his Job after this video. The Vessel was found 48 hours later still intact. The captain judgment to abandon Ship was wrong. He risked the lives of his
Crewmen during the dangerous evacuation. And the Captain risked his life by diving into the freezing ocean with violent waves. He would of been safer on the ship. The ship floated in ocean unmanned for 48 hours without Captain. The only damage to the ship was the fishing boat attached.Sustained from shaking. The evidence shows that the ship sustained itself without captain or crew.
